Archaeological tinned iron artefacts

Tinning of iron is a technique used since the second half of the 5 th century BC by ancient craftsmen. It was used as a decorative technique imitating silver, as a corrosion resistant barrier, as a suitable surface for soldering, and for its non-toxic properties. Usually badly preserved and hidden under iron corrosion products, it is though visible on X-radiography and can be identified by chemical analysis. Its conservation poses problems during mechanical cleaning and desalination treatments.
