Stigmatization of people with mental illness in students of helping professions

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the stigma of mental illness among students in the helping professions. More emphasis is placed on psychology students and second-year elementary and secondary school teaching students. These students are the focus of the research presented in the research section of this thesis. The literature section of the thesis briefly describes the historical development of the use of the concept of stigma itself, then provides a basic overview of theories of stigma and the process of stigmatization. The thesis then looks in more detail at the stigma of mental illness itself, both from a historical perspective and in terms of current research and contemporary conceptions of stigma. Furthermore, the thesis outlines the serious impacts of stigma of mental illness and provides an overview of current interventions to reduce stigma. Throughout the literature review, particular emphasis is placed on the presentation and critical appraisal of current research in this broad and multidisciplinary research area.
