The influence of the Media on the Lifestyle of Teenagers
Richterová, Karolína ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This thesis examines the impact of media on adolescents' lifestyles, more specifically on two aspects of lifestyle, namely physical activity and sleep. Within the Covid-19 pandemic period, individuals were forced to stay in their homes, and all their social contact, as well as school and work obligations, shifted to the online environment. With this, screen time also increased, as did the associated sedentary behaviour. As they were all forced to be isolated, sports and leisure activities were also very limited or often also transferred to the online environment. The aim of this thesis is therefore to try to define the habits of adolescents in terms of physical activity, sleep and media consumption, and how these aspects are interconnected, and whether adolescents perceive this interconnection. The aim was also to provide some education to the individuals, where they were then confronted with recommendations for particular aspects of lifestyle (sleep and physical activity), but also recommendations regarding media consumption. As lifestyle was strongly influenced by the Covid-19 disease pandemic, the aim was also to see how individual students' habits changed within this period, but also afterwards. Within the framework of this work, qualitative research was conducted. Using in-depth interviews...
Media habits across three generations
Sármányová, Cyntia ; Trültzsch-Wijnen, Christine (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
Comparing media habits across generations is crucial for understanding how different cohorts interact with media. The elderly, middle, and young generations' media consumption patterns are compared in this master's thesis to give insight into the factors that shape these generations' behaviours. This study investigates differences in participation, content consumption, and platform choices through a secondary analysis of qualitative interviews conducted with participants from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The results emphasize how sociocultural circumstances, technological developments, and historical events have an impact on generational media preferences and habits. The study also investigates how political structures affect media access and availability. We may better comprehend generational dynamics and the complex interactions between socioeconomic conditions and power dynamics in shaping media habits thanks to the theoretical insights from this study. The practical applications of this research help media practitioners reach a variety of audiences in an effective manner through content production, marketing plans, and communication techniques. By analysing the way past media habits influence current and future patterns, the study also advances our understanding of the changing nature of...

Subcultural identity of two musical subcultures in the Czech Republic - Hip-Hop and Metal
Vejvoda, Jan ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The focus of this work is on the subcultural identities of two dominant music subcultures in the Czech Republic and specifically their discourse. In the theoretical part of the work, culture and subculture are first defined. Subsequently, the basic theories of discourse in a subcultural context are described. Both subcultures are then described in this work from their first appearance in the Czech cultural sphere to their current state. The practical part of this work explains the research method used, namely discourse analysis of text. The results of this analysis are then presented in the form of selected relevant elements, which are subsequently described in the context of the respective subculture. The conclusion of the work discusses both subcultural identities and compares them. The aim of this thesis is to describe subcultural identities of hip-hop and metal subcultures in the Czech Republic through discourse analysis. The main sources for the theoretical part of the work are primarily professional literature focused on culture and discourse, as well as academic papers that address the analyzed subcultures. For the practical part, selected online magazines that publish articles on hip-hop and metal themes were analyzed.
The kinds of internet memes: The concept of memes and intertextuality in the internet culture
Březina, Luděk ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
The subject of this bachelors thesis is the different kinds of Internet memes. The term meme has evolved considerably since its origin in the field of evolutionary biology, and is now known primarily in the context of the Internet environment. Its digital nature makes it ideal for the creation and spread of Internet memes, and thus also for their study. At the beginning of this thesis, I describe the characteristics of digital culture crucial to the Internet enviroment and the formation of its own culture. I then introduce Internet memes as an imaginary doorway into the exploration of this culture, which, in the spirit of Richard Dawkins' original definition of a meme, represent units of Internet cultural content. The thesis then goes on to describe Susan Blackmore's theory of memes and Julia Kristeva's idea of intertextuality, subsequently combining the similarities of the two theories in defining four basic types of internet memes. In the analytical part, the principles of this categorization are demonstrated through semiotic analysis of selected Internet memes, in which both the features necessary for their classification and definition of their overall place in Internet culture are described.

Kroneislová, Adéla ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis The Construction of Man and Society in Textbooks for Primary Schools is to analyze and reconstruct the image of Czech national identity that is present in Czech textbooks for primary schools. The thesis is divided into three main parts: theory, methodology, and final research. The theoretical part includes the scientific framework of discursive analysis, the textbook text as a source of collective identity transmission, and the concepts of culture and understanding of the nation that are relevant for the reconstruction of the national identity which is transmitted to pupils during their studies. The method of linguistic discursive analysis is used to achieve the research goals. The chosen method enables the identification of the basic elements of the discourse. The research section details the research typologies and the findings that were made. Using the data obtained from the analysis of the textbooks, an image of Czech national identity is subsequently described and the main values on which Czech national identity is based are outlined. In the conclusion of the thesis, further possible approaches for extending the research are mentioned and the overall process of the thesis is summarized.

Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Media Consumption of IKSZ students at FSV UK
Zaškolná, Jana ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
This thesis deals with media habits and internet use in the present context. Problematic internet use is a growing problem, which can lead to negative impact on users' lives. In this thesis I focus on compulsive internet use based on The Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS), which is a standardized tool for measuring compulsivity online. I also discuss three areas of impact - productivity, sleep and mental health. A solution, how to prevent the negative impact of problematic internet use from happening, is controlled internet use - the users become aware of their own online behaviour and self-regulate their media habits to build a healthier and more useful relationship with the internet. I apply the discussed phenomenons in the reasearch part of the thesis, which looks into media habits of IKSZ (Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism at Charles University) students. Using a questionnaire I find out whether the students struggle with compulsive internet use based on CIUS; whether internet use impacts areas of the students' lives (productivity, sleep and mental health) and whether the students self-regulate their media habits. According to the results majority of the students show average or low level of compulsivity, however, there is an essential percentage of students, whose level of...
Construction of national French identity in Children's textbooks
Ahossey, Chantal ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Supa, Markéta (referee)
The research for the dissertation on "the construction of French national identity in the textbooks for children" is aimed towards a descriptive analysis of the foundations of French national identity. The research is based on the portrayal of French national identity in the history and civic education textbooks for primary and secondary schools. The theoretical part represents a notion of culture, nation and collective memory as key elements for the construction of national identity. The discourses used in textbooks are presented as a tool for the handover of cultural elements and a medium for the construction of a cultural reality. Consequently, through methods of discourse analysis, the dissertation focuses on identifying elements of discourse in the textbooks' contents that testify of French culture. On the basis of the results extracted from the research, the self-image of French nationality is then reconstructed. Subsequently, the national self-conception emerging from the textbooks is compared to the one drawn through the new year's presidential speeches between the years 2012 to 2018. The aim of this comparison is to assess whether these two models of French identity hold evident distinctions or if they are constructed on similar foundations. Keywords National identity, France, culture,...
