Modern Korean Journalism (Outline of Development with Particular Reference to the Park Chung-hee Period)

The thesis concerns the development of Korean journalism during sociopolitical changes in Korean society from the end of 19th century until the gradual rise of democracy at the end of eighties of the 20th century. The first part of the thesis addresses formation of South Korean press since the opening of the country and establishment of first periodicals to the flourishing of nationalist press at the turn of the century. The next part describes the period of Japanese occupation, its restrictive outset, modest politics of the twenties and the main censorship apparatus of the Japanese colonial administration. The main part concerns the post-war development of Korean journalism and essential changes in media politics of the then government. Primarily the president Park Chung-hee's period is emphasized, where individual chapters describe used censorship mechanisms, state interventions into press independence, including indirect censorship that is closely related to economic growth of media companies in the sixties. North Korean Ideologization of History (Focusing on Main Events of the 20th Century)

This bachelor thesis deals with interpretation of modern Korean historiography, focusing on North Korean historiography of 20th century and influence of juche state ideology. The second part of the thesis introduces selected examples of revisionism of Korean history based on North Korean sources. This part focuses on the Korean ancient times until the era of Three Kingdoms, beginning of the modern era and most importantly on the interpretation of the most significant events of 20th and 21st century. The last part of the thesis introduces some aspects of contemporary revisions and trends in the interpretation of Korean history.
The Establishment of Museums in Korea and Their Educational Role

5 Abstract: The aim of this thesis is firstly to deal with the emergence and development of museums on the Korean peninsula and since 1948 only in the Republic of Korea. Secondly it aims to concentrate on their educational activities. The very first modern museum in Korea called the Imperial Museum was established at the beginning of the 20th century. A year after the museum opened its door to the public, Korea was annexed by Japan. That had a great impact on the development of the first museums in Korea. After the liberation from Japanese rule in 1945 the museums were handed over to Koreans. Museum activity had only just begun when the Korean War broke out. The focus of the following part is the National Museum of Korea (NMK), the most important museum in South Korea. For most of its history the museum moved from one place to another. In 2005 it finally found its place in a newly built modern building in Soul's district called Jongsan. By taking NMK as an example the thesis explores the museum educational activities. It offers a closer look at programs for foreigners and the growing number of immigrants and senior citizens, popular lecture series, wide range of guided tours etc. Finally, some exhibition projects are introduced. Male Oficial Costume in Chosŏn Period

Throughout the history of traditional Korean clothing there have been various foreign influences, numerous reforms and changes, yet all this time it kept one distinctive feature: being an indicator of the wearer's social status and rank. This very feature was emphasized and strictly followed especially during the Chosŏn period (1392-1910). Placing emphasis on the male court clothing, this thesis pursues identifying individual attires and uniforms for the royal family and civil and military officials, who are associated with the royal court. It also depicts history of court clothing, most frequently used materials and weaving techniques in brief.
Perception of Homosexuality in Contemporary Korean Cinema

The main subject of this bachelor's thesis is displaying the homosexuality through korean movies and the perception of homosexuality by the general public. First part is mostly dedicated to korean homosexual community, it's origin, organizations, but also to historical outset that should point at the fact, that Korea was not always such a homophobic country. Second part of the thesis is focused on movie production, it's progression and also on few brief analysis of a concrete movies. Their main plots, characters and what kind of response did they receive from korean public.
Prenatal dreams tchämong in Korea

The aim of this thesis is to present tchämong, a specific Korean dream of conception, that if properly interpretated can provide some information pertaining to the conception and other qualities of the unborn child to the dreamer. This thesis contextualizes tchämong into a broader category of dreams of conception, and then focuses on its specific features in Korea's culture. The fundamental aim of this paper is to exemplify the claim that tchämong is embedded in the system of traditional beliefs, practices and myths, which act as a main factor in continuing this tradition into modern times. The primary focus is given to tchämong within the framework of pregnancy practices and beliefs and close relation between tchämong and myths, which is expressed especially in its symbolism.

This bachelor's thesis tries to document everyday life of a young man, fostering and education of him in DPRK with a focus on the capital city. The key source of information is a record of a story of an emigrant about his childhood, school, family and growing-up in the capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea - Pyongyang. His personal experience, observations and knowledge confronted with other sources and literature have expressive value in comprehending the real life of citizens in DPRK deprived of their basic human rights by the communist regime. Family Law in Republic of Korea after 1948

This thesis describes hierarchical and patrilineal norms in family law of the Korean Civil Code and discusses a gradual elimination of these norms in compatibility with constitutional law. First part of the thesis highlights the specifics of the Korean family law in a historical context and analyzes the head of a family system's origin and family registers as one of the main sources of inequality in the Korean family law. The second part focuses on the process of the Constitution and the Civil Code codification and represents Confucian and women's organizations which influenced the family law. In this case the incompatibility of family law of the Civil Code and constitutional law was found out as the main object of the dispute. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the present family law in the Civil Code can be considered as compatible with the Constitution or not. The third part is therefore devoted to amendments to family law of socio- political changes background, where is the clear gradual elimination of hierarchical and patrilineal ethical standards of the Civil Code until the turn of the new millennium.
The Phenomenon of Compressed Modernity and Social Problems in Korea

The aim of this thesis is to introduce the compressed modernity phenomenon in Korea that took place in the second half of the 20th century and in addition to the rapid development brought also a lot of social problems. This thesis explains the process of compressed modernity and describes its progress by decades. The main aim of this thesis is to introduce and analyze the most important problems - defamiliation, insufficient social welfare, problem of the Korean economy, problem of frequent accidents and dualism - that occurred because of the rapid development. Today's policy that is trying to solve these problems and stop their advancement is also described.
