Wybitulová, Berenika ; Šmidrkal, Václav (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis explores the Anschluss of Austria and its media image in selected Czech and German periodicals of First Czechoslovak Republic. The aim of the thesis is to present the narratives that shaped the news coverage of this historical event, and at the same time to show the influence of state-controlled mechanisms on the form of news about the Anschluss. The first chapter of the thesis introduces the media landscape of the First Republic, consideringthe connection of the Czechoslovak News Agency (ČTK) to state authorities or censorship measures during this period. In particular,it focuses on the phenomenon of party and non-party newspapers, as it is party and non-party periodicals across the political spectrum that are analysed in the second chapter of the thesis. In this section, the circumstances of the Anschluss are first briefly described, then the thesis analyses the impact of this situation on Czechoslovakia's international position and diplomatic relations. The analysis itself relies on archival findings that document the communication between the ČTK and state institutions during March 1938, and uses these findings to evaluate the content and wording of the articles in the various periodicals. Most of the periodicals agree that Czechoslovakia was not in danger after the Anschluss...
Liechtenstein between direct democracy and absolute monarchy? The Road to a New Liechtenstein Constitution
Floder, Daniel ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Lizcová, Zuzana (referee)
At the end of the 20th century, a power conflict emerged between the ambitious Prince of Liechtenstein and the elected representatives which wanted to curb the prince's considerable powers. This development culminated in the 2003 constitutional amendment, in which the prince prevailed and gained powers at the expense of the democratically elected institutions. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the 2003 constitutional amendment and its impact on the constitutional and political system of Liechtenstein and to determine the reasons behind the prince's success in the constitutional referendum. To achieve these goals, a case study analysis is conducted. Concepts such as the king's dilemma are used to interpret the results within the framework of political science research on monarchies. The hypothesis suggests that despite the strengthening of the prince's political power, the country has not turned into an absolute monarchy, and that the main reason for the prince's success was his influential status rooted deeply in the historical traditions and sentiments of the population. The thesis utilizes primary sources, most importantly the constitution, supplemented with insights from secondary literature in the fields of political science, history, and law. The thesis concludes that the prince's...

Štuksová, Natálie ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
Bakalářská práce Téma: Fenomén ilegálního stahování - porovnání českého a německého přístupu Anglicky: The phenomenon of illegal downloading - a comparison of Czech and German approaches Autor: Natálie Štuksová Studijní program: Česko-německá studia Vedoucí práce: PhDr. Alena Zelená, PhD. Abstract This bachelor thesis is dedicated to the topic of illegal downloading. It compares two different approaches to this issue, namely from the Czech Republic and Germany. In Germany, illegal downloading is punished much more severely than in the Czech Republic. Also, the legal framework that determines what is considered an illegal download is much stricter in Germany. The aim of this paper is to identify the reasons that cause the different approach to illegal downloading in these countries, which otherwise share a number of similarities. The thesis also seeks to provide a professional analysis of a phenomenon that almost every Internet user encounters in everyday life. The thesis concludes that the most fundamental cause is a different modern historical experience. Germany, unlike the Czech Republic, has a more than 70-year tradition with a democratic system, while the Czech Republic had a socialist unfree regime until 1989. Other reasons, such as society's attitude to the issue or the legal framework, stem...
Johannes-Mathesius-Gesellschaft and its place in Czech-German relations (with an emphasis on activities in the 1990s)
Zelinková, Klára ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Zelená, Alena (referee)
The bachelor thesis titled Johannes Mathesius Gesellschaft and its activities in the 1990s focuses on the Sudeten German Protestants during the 20th century. The thesis first describes the establishment of the German Evangelical Church in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. This is placed in the context of the rise of Protestantism in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic. In more detail, the Sudeten German crisis and the related problems of the Germans in the Czechoslovak territory are outlined, which were reflected in the events within the Church. Subsequently, the work introduces the Sudeten German evangelical association Johannes Mathesius Gesellschaft, which was founded in 1961. Its activity was scientific work connected with the preservation of the legacy of the German Protestant Reformation found in Bohemia and with the preservation of the legacy of the German Protestant Church in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. An important part of this work is the inclusion of the association in the Czech-German dialogue after the Velvet Revolution. In this sense, the context and important events connected with the establishment of the new cross- border Czech-German cooperation and the reaction of the association to all the events that took place are presented.
Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its European policy 1986-2007
Ježková, Simona ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
This master's thesis, titled Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its Approach to European Integration 1986-2007, analyses an era of twenty-plus years in which the party, led by Jörg Haider, underwent a major ideological shift. The FPÖ abandoned its original liberal pro-European position and, in the 1990s, became a Eurosceptic populist movement akin to the far right. This work aims to assess whether these shifts can be described using the theories formulated by Paul Taggart and Aleks Szczerbiak and by Nick Sitter - who postulate that a party's participation in government is among the factors influencing the degree to which it is Eurosceptic. They suggest that a party's rhetoric regarding the European Union tamps down if the party participates in the government, becoming a part of a coalition government or supporting a minority government. During the period examined in this thesis, the FPÖ was a part of three governing coalitions. It was also a period of significant events which enable us to analyse the FPÖ's conduct - in particular, the Austrian accession to the EC/EU, the adoption of treaties modifying the functioning of the EU, the Austrian presidencies of the Council of the EU in 1998 and 2006, the European Parliament elections and their representative's activities in the EP, the process of...
The 1972 Interruption of Pregnancy Law in the context of the family and women's policy of the GDR
Sklenková, Kateřina ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
Kateřina Sklenková: "The 1972 Interruption of Pregnancy Law in the context of the family and women's policy of the GDR." Abstract The Bachelor's thesis focuses on the Interruptionof Pregnancy Law of 1972, which was the only law in East Germany that was passed unanimously. It gave women the option to terminate a pregnancy during its first 12 weeks without any indication. There were ambivalent views in society about this practice. After numerous protests, the churches were granted an exemptionand abortioncould be denied on the basis of faith. In the wave of resistance that rose when it became apparent that artificial terminations of pregnancy would be criminalisedagain in the process of German unification, it can be seen that the Law was generally viewed positively. The thesis places the Law in its historical context and in the context of the regime's other family and emancipation policies This text answers the question of how it was possible that such a liberal norm was in place in the GDR. It explains that there were multiple factors. First, it was the socialist regime itself, which was supposed to be scientific and egalitarian in the spirit of the Marxist revolution. Then there was pressure from within the state, where the restrictive policywas criticisedbythe general public, backed by professional...
Czech-German Relations in the Field of Environmental Protection (1990-2022)
Strnadel, František ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
The goal of my bachelor's thesis is to present the development of the Czech-German as well as Czechoslovak-German cooperation in the field of environmental protection, especially between the turn of 1980s and 1990s and the year 2022. My thesis uses the Karl W. Deutsch's analytical concept of transactionalism, according to which the more states cooperate, the more stable and peaceful their relations become. The question is whether this concept is being fulfilled, which I present by the institutionalization of this cooperation. First, I outline how the phenomenon of environmental protection has evolved in the states of my focus and how it has gradually become a political issue. Then, I present how our relations have developed in this respect and show, with concrete examples, what has been achieved. I divide this mapping (or Bestandaufnahme) based on major historical events - the revolutions of 1989, the establishment of the Czech Republic in 1993 and its accession to the European Union in 2004. A crucial milestone in my work is the establishment of the Czech-German Strategic Dialogue in 2015 - the question is whether it is a kind of "culmination" of the institutionalization of these relations and whether there is any more fundamental vision of cooperation in the future, or where are the possible...
The position of the CDU in Baden-Württemberg on the issue of asylum policy
Prokhoshin, Aleksei ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Filipová, Lucie (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the topical issue of the asylum policy, which is one of the most pivotal topics in contemporary German politics. It focuses on the state politics of Baden- Württemberg and deals with one political party, namely the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, which is one of the key actors on the state level. This thesis analyses the period 2011-2021, so it intentionally avoids the Ukrainian refugee crisis as a consequence of Russian aggression. The bachelor's thesis presents basic information about the position of the CDU on asylum policy and provides the historical context of immigration to Germany and specifically to Baden-Württemberg. Afterwards, it analyses the development of the attitude towards the asylum policy of CDU Baden-Württemberg's key personalities chronologically, also analysing the argumentation of their stances, for which primary and secondary sources are used. The primary sources are session protocols from the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg; the secondary sources are regional news articles and several chosen monographs, which serve to provide the thesis with political and social context, which is crucial for a more precise interpretation of CDU Baden-Württemberg politicians. Based on the conducted analysis, one may conclude that the biggest shift in...
The Austrian electoral law reform 2007: An Experiment and inspiration?
Uhlich, Tereza ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the Austrian electoral reform of 2007, which included the lowering of the voting age from 18 to 16 years. Lowering the voting age has resonated in Austrian society since the 1990s. As a rule, it was promoted by the left-wing parties, while the right-wing parties opposed it. Gradually, in a total of five federal states, it was possible to lower the age limit at the municipal or state level. At the federal level, the situation was different. The implementation was possible due to a political calculation between the governing parties, when the SPÖ's proposal to lower the voting age was exchanged for that of the ÖVP, which advocated the introduction of postal voting options for all Austrians. The proposal was finally approved by all political parties in the parliament. Although the lowering of the voting age was approved without much attention, it caused the creation of many projects, thanks to which it was possible to maintain the interest of young people in politics.
The issue of gentrification in selected parts of Prague and Berlin
Moravová, Darja ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Zelená, Alena (referee)
This thesis, a comparative case study, deals with the issue of gentrification in selected parts of Prague and Berlin, the selected parts being Holešovice in Prague and Friedrichshain- Kreuzberg in Berlin. Gentrification is the process of replacing the original population with a more affluent population, and it involves things like physical transformation of a neighborhood, rent increases, or changes in the shops and services offered in a neighborhood. The aim of the thesis was to provide a comparison of the gentrification process in Holešovice and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg based on three basic factors: the development and structure of the population, changes in shops and services in the district, and physical transformation. Furthermore, the reactions of residents and politicians to changes in neighborhoods were also investigated. From the comparison, it became clear that the gentrification process in Holešovice and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is carried out in a similar way, but that in Berlin residents and politicians are much more active in terms of interest in their neighborhood. Keywords Gentrification, urban transformation, redevelopment, housing crisis
