Flying Under the Radar: Understanding US Influence on Air Power Strategies of Non-Major Allies
Mongardini, Thomas ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; McDonagh, Ken (referee)
This dissertation investigates the influence exerted by the United States on the formulation of air power development strategies by its allied nations. The study specifically concentrates on three case studies, namely Morocco, Chile, and Australia. Through the implementation of a comparative analysis, the primary objective of this study is to discern commonalities and disparities, thereby offering valuable perspectives on the political, economic, and security determinants that shape these phenomena. This study additionally investigates the repercussions of the United States' role in the global air power domain and potential policy adaptations in light of evolving geopolitical conditions. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of primary and secondary sources, this research provides unique insights into the complex interplay between national defence strategies and international military alliances. The findings of this study carry significant implications for policy deliberations concerning international military collaboration. The aforementioned source offers a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the United States' strategy in enhancing the air power capabilities of its allied nations.
The Influence of Colonialism on the Child Soldier Phenomenon: A Comparison of Myanmar and South Sudan
Carpentier-Baugh, Elizabeth ; Kaczmarski, Marcin (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
2 Abstract The purpose of this study is to establish if colonialism influences the child soldier phenomenon in postcolonial states and to what extent. The hypothesis is that colonialism influences the child soldier phenomenon in postcolonial countries, including the reasons for their usage, and then their recruitment and use. This study is achieved by exploring the case studies of Myanmar and South Sudan, two countries which have experienced colonialism and have used child soldiers in their recent or current civil wars. This study's findings are analysed using a comparative analysis of these two cases and are compared against the impacts of colonialism. The impacts of colonialism are discussed using a five-variable impact model. These impacts of colonialism are also impacts of child soldier usage. Therefore, this study follows a three-step process in which colonialism is the beginning stage, the five-variable impact model is the middle stage, and then these impacts influencing child soldiers is the end stage. Primary and secondary sources are used including questionnaires, reports, newspapers and academic journals for the collection of data. The participants completing the questionnaires are divided into academic and professional backgrounds. The data is analysed using content analysis and deductive...
Gibridnaya Voyna in Light of the War in Ukraine: Analysing Changes in Russian Interpretations and the Use of Hybrid Warfare Concept.
Filina, Anastasia ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
After military invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian Hybrid Warfare went from being a convenient 'bogeyman' of Russian military strategy interpretation, to a conceptual pariah of Western political and strategic discourse. This was not, however the case in Russia, where, admittedly, gibridnaya voyna transformed into the phase of 'rationalisation propaganda' in an attempt justify Kremlin's self-made threat perception. This study aims to fill the research gap in Western contemporary analysis of gibridnaya voyna by conducting an exploratory research to see if there have been any changes in the interpretation and the use of gibridnaya voyna in Russian military scholarship after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. The study will demonstrate that although conceptual understanding of the term remains the same, its interpretation in military and linguistic (buzzwords) domains experienced significant changes. Keywords Hybird warfare; Russia; West Title Gibridnaya Voyna in Light of the War in Ukraine: Analysing Changes in Russian Interpretations and the Use of Hybrid Warfare Concept.
Frontex: A Gendarmerie of the EU or just a Border Assistance?
Netopil, Petr ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
This research focuses on the Civil-Security Relations between the EU and its border agency, FRONTEX. Relationships between the state and its border guards vary wildly in space and time in terms of the level of militarization, which is why this thesis set out to define the situation of the EU's first uniformed and armed service. A single case study was used, as FRONTEX as a transnational border agency is a deviant case. This research creates a typology of security services within the state and then places FRONTEX within it. In the discussion that follows, the relationship between the EU and FRONTEX seems to be matched best by the relationship between a state and its gendarmerie, though the police force is also very close. Furthermore, there are exceptions where the agency behaves more like an army or a civilian service. In terms of real-world analogues, it tracks most closely the relationships between the Baltic states, Finland, Poland, and their respective border guards.
The Foreign Policy of Sweden and Finland in Relation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation: The Analysis from the Perspective of Neoclassical Realism
Hložková, Veronika ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
The following thesis maps the development of the attitude of Sweden and Finland towards membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization from the end of the Cold War to their decision to join the Alliance in 2022. The first aim is to identify the factors that led to the refusal of both countries to join NATO and instead to the preference for close cooperation. Subsequently, these factors are monitored over time to capture their transformation after the start of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Neoclassical realism is used as the theoretical and analytical framework, which combines independent variables at the level of the international system with intervening variables at the level of a state. The effects of these variables form a specific reaction of foreign policy - the dependent variable - in this case, the Swedish and Finnish decision to join NATO.
DDR and child soldiers
Ardigò, Caterina ; Garb, Maja (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The object of this Master's thesis is to investigate the role of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of former child soldiers in the conflict of Sierra Leone. Even though extensive research has been carried out in the direct aftermath of the conflict, thus in the immediate subsequent years, few researchers focused on the long-term effects and effectiveness of the implementation of such programs. The first chapter examines the concept of peacebuilding, starting from its first definitions until the latest evolutions, the main actors, and the practices tied to it. The literature review concerning the various issues stemming from the experience of child soldiering is found in Chapter 2 of the thesis. Chapter 3 outlines the methodology we used to investigate our research question while Chapter 4 illustrates the analysis we conducted. The findings led to the conclusion that DDR programs are effective in the short-term, but this notion cannot be transposed into the long run. Thus, programs should include a long-term strategy focusing more on the psychological sphere of former combatants. Metal Detecting Ownership and Non-Ownership Motives
Hrušák, Jan ; Gregor, Martin (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis addresses the phenomenon of hobby metal detecting in the Czech Republic, aiming to determine whether individuals' wealth influences the for- mation of detected finds collections. The mass spread of metal detecting in the Czech Republic since the 1990s has proven the significance of studying this activity. The phenomenon of metal detecting can be classified under contest theory, where agents make costly efforts to compete for a limited resource, which in this case is archaeological finds. From the standpoint of economics, a study about resources allocation, the metal detecting hobby can be an in- triguing topic for investigation. This thesis presents estimates of models based on five different datasets, each containing several thousands of observations obtained from a renowned Czech metal detecting website. The findings sug- gest that relatively wealthier metal detectorists are more likely to submit coins, but not artifacts. Given that coins form a relatively homogeneous group, the estimation results associated with coins might be applied to the formation of finds collections overall. Hence, the collecting of finds is likely to be negatively associated with an individual's socioeconomic status. Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacognosy Candidate: Matěj Lojkásek Instructor: Pharm.Dr. Daniela Hulcová, Ph.D. Title of thesis: Isolation of alkaloids from Narcissus poeticus recurvus and its semi-synthetic derivatives Key words: Amaryllidaceae, galanthin, semi-synthetic derivatives, Alzheimer's disease, acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, cytotoxicity. As part of the thesis, two alkaloid substances (galanthin and cherylline) were isolated from the bulbs of the mother plant Narcissus poeticus recurvus using preparative TLV chromatography. The obtained galanthin was subsequently used for the preparation of 6 derivatives of this alkaloid, namely esters. Galanthine esters were prepared by acylation of the hydroxyl group. The derivatives were identified by NMR, HMRS and the optical rotation was measured. In the end, only 5 of the prepared substances were recovered in sufficient quantity and purity. Derivative G2 could not be retained. In the case of G1, G4 and G6, the yield of the reaction was higher than 50%, whereas for G3 it was 49.55%, G2 19.23% and G5 39.79%. All prepared derivatives except G2 were tested for inhibitory activity against cholinesterases by the Ellman method using recombinant enzymes. Unfortunately, according to the IC50 values...

Janovská, Michaela ; Pražák, Jakub (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
Cyber-attacks to various sectors have been on the rise over the past decade, and the EU space programme is not exempt to these. Due to many European industries and sectors relying heavily on space-enabled systems, maintaining the security and availability of EU space is key for the proper function and prosperity of the EU and its competitiveness. With the emergence of New Space, space-based systems are becoming more connected to the internet, creating more vulnerabilities which can be exploited by cyber-attackers. However, space-based objects are not the only segment of the EU space programme that are vulnerable to exploitation. Space cybersecurity has not been on the forefront of researcher's focus, until now. The past decade has shown a shift in attention towards the issue of space cybersecurity, but this mainly focuses outside of the EU. This research aims to find out how cyber threats to the EU space programme have evolved throughout the past decade and how they have been tackled within the EU. Regional and international cooperation on the matters of space cybersecurity of the EU space programme will be explored through the optic of identity building through shared threat. Research interviews with experts from the field of EU space programme cybersecurity shed light on the current situation,...
Water treatment efficiency using granular activated carbon
Poděbradská, Tereza ; Biela, Renata (referee) ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor)
This bachelor’s thesis deals with the use of activated carbon in drinking water treatment, especially in removing pesticide substances. The thesis consists of two parts – a theoretical one and a practical one. In the theoretical part, the issue of activated carbon as a material is analysed, including its most important characteristics for the utilization in the waterworks industry. Furthermore, the adsorption process is described, and the characterization of pesticide substances is carried out, as well as the way they get into water and the possible means of their removal. The practical part describes the laboratory experiment performed to draw a comparison between the efficiency of four different types of activated carbon on removing the relevant metabolite Acetochlor ESA from a water sample.
