The image of an entrepreneur in the press : a critical discourse analysis
Švrčková, Taťána ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Gillárová, Kateřina (referee)
In this thesis we focused on different ways of representing entrepreneurs in the press - the process of selection in the news. There is not only the question of gatekeeping, but there are more commonalities and assumptions: categorization of every kind, that means the representation of concrete facts in more general terms, and casual attribution. The world of the press is not the real world, but a world produced and consequent. Codes present the world with meaning or significance by organizing it into categories and relationships which are not there "naturally", but which represent the interests, values and viewpoints of social groups. Reality is mediated and the news is socially constructed. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Czech internet literary criticism
Kučera, Štěpán ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (referee)
This diploma thesis surveys Czech literary criticism on the internet and its relationship towards the printed literary criticism, or generally, the relationship between new and traditional media. I define what "Czech literary criticism on the internet" can mean and describe its situation in 2009. I created an imaginary central line going from the terminal of traditional media to the terminal of new media. I lined the websites from the ones tightly connected to the traditional terminal (e. g. web magazines) to the ones in the purely "net terminal" (e. g. discussion servers). I found important projects there that exist in the periphery of Czech literary life (as reflected by the traditional media). Then I asked members of the web projects to fill in a short questionnaire focused on the literary criticism on the internet and its relationship to the culture of traditional media. Also, I posed the same questions to Czech book publishers as representatives of the traditional culture. I found out that the publishers' relationship towards the new media critics is "slightly optimistic" but at the same time ambivalent and distrustful. On the other hand the survey among members of web projects revealed that for these people the internet publication is as valid as a publication in printed media but still they are aware...
Politeness in television political discussion
Dufek, Ondřej ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
Rigorosum thesis Politeness in Television Political Discussion deals with specific nature of politeness and impoliteness use in mediated political discourse, illustrating it with the Czech Television programme Questions of Václav Moravec. In the first part it defines television political debate as a genre. Then it summarizes development of politeness theories both in world and Czech pragmatic and pragmalinguistic tradition. After synthetising the main conceptions it comes out with its own version of theory of politeness and impoliteness, basing it on Cooperation Principle and politeness theory with utilization of face concept. Then it applies theoretical principles in practical debate analysis and pays attention to the most distinct agents of politeness and impoliteness expression. In conlusion it identifies characteristic regularities of politeness and impoliteness usage in television political discussion and adverts to relevant factors that influence the shape of communication. The rigorosum thesis helps to map the field, in which conflict interferes with cooperation as two antagonistic forces, and explains their interaction by the usage of politeness and impoliteness. Media impact on Czech language : (on example of using moved and not moved forms of women surnames)
Sehnalová, Lucie ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
This diploma thesis is dealing with motion of surnames according to gender and their forms in Czech media. In the beginning the formation of surnames is described; chapters considering the grammar rules shows not only how to move surnames, but also how to declension surnames and integrate them into the text. In the diploma thesis I tried to mention standard surnames as well as those surnames which can cause problems while we embody them into Czech texts. To found out how to correctly integrate surnames into the Czech language and if Czech media adhere to the rules was the goal of my diploma thesis. Motion of surnames according to the gender is considered to be very controversial and questionable, and that is why contradictory arguments and comments are added to the chapters which are dealing with this problem. Language is influenced by media majorly. That was the reason I made a research to found out how our media use Czech women surnames in the second part of this work. As I have noticed, different newspapers and magazines have differend approaches to motion of surnames and the rules should be regularized and consolidated according to my opinion. For the researched media it is possible to use this part of my work and the deductions I made in their redaction codexes. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)
Dušek, Petr ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Rigorous thesis "The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)" deals with propaganda in the sports journalism. Its aim is to evaluate how the Czechoslovak press reported about successes of one of the best domestic athlet Emil Zatopek at the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki. I defined a hypothesis, based on specialized literature and observation, that journalists exploited Zatopek's triumphs for propagandistic reasons, and presented the successful athlet as a socialist hero. I verified this hypothesis by means of quantitative content analysis of the journals Rude pravo and Lidova demokracie. I defined two secondary hypothesis as well: The news coverage of the Olympic Games in 1952 was more propagandistically damaged than the Olympic Games in 1948, and the news coverage by Rude pravo of both Olympic Games was more propagandistically damaged than by Lidova demokracie. In the analysis I measure the propagandistic damage of the articles, the photos and the representations of Emil Zatopek. The whole research has a deep theoretical background, which includes a definition of propaganda, an outline of the cultural policy 1948-1952, and a definition of the "hero" concept based on different conceptions from both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Thinking socialism without the tanks. A discoursive study of the role of freedom of speech in the various interpretaitons of the czechoslovak year 1968
Stropnický, Matěj ; Bělohradský, Václav (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Trying to overcome the traditional analytic nihilism of papers dealing with Czechoslovakia in 1968, which arises from the military occupation, the author puts the fact of freedom of speech into his work's central interest. In a comparative study this work studies the different interpretations of its role and meaning, including: the dogmatic point of view concerning the freedom of speech being a source of organized counterrevolution; the effort of the reformers to include the freedom of speech into their reform and meanwhile to make it an instrument of it and the way it instead became an autonomous control of their politics; the realistic criticism concentrated on the manifestations of irresponsibility in the press endangering the reform on the one side and not being able to exit the temporary system imagination on the other; it equally pays attention to the 'unnamed', non-members of the Party, who process their self- establishment as an opposing political current, who however rest being no less than a source of interesting subversion; and finally examines the radical democrat approach understanding the freedom of speech as an obligatory condition of their politics together projecting the reconstitution of the society as an autonomous political subject. The work uses contemporary documents and texts...
