Changes in Japanese Human Resource Management in time and space
Zvědělíková, Mirka ; Koubek, Ivo (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
The subject of this work is to assess the evolvement of Japanese Human Resource Management mainly from the last decade of the 20th century, the time of the economic crisis in Japan, until present times. The different style of Japanese HRM is considered to be one of the reasons behind the success of Japanese firms on the international markets in the latter half of the 20th century. After 40 years of continuous growth the adaptation to the new worsening conditions was inevitable, which is a situation not unlike the one the western firms are facing today. Focus of this thesis mostly lie in elaborating on the origins and principles of the HRM methods seen as typically Japanese, their reaction to unfavorable economic situation and how this process could be applied in western settings. Then, based on the past changes and worlwide trends, I will outline the possible future development. The aim of this thesis is to uncover to what extent the Japanese Human Resource Management principles are uniquely Japanese and tied to Japanese environment, to map their adaptation to economy in crisis and to find out if this approach is applicable in western firms.
Irrational Behaviour
Vlach, Tomáš ; Koubek, Ivo (advisor) ; Kvaček, Jan (referee)
This thesis questions the notion of rationally behaving individuals as an as- sumption of microeconomic and macroeconomic models. Its goal is to show that foundations on which the modern economics is built are not so much solid. Selected topics are discussed theoretically and subsequently confirmed empir- ically by existing research studies. Afterwards, they are extended by related findings and potential implications for human behaviour. The thesis contains examples of irrational behaviour in which it is possible to behave rationally as well as examples in which it is very difficult to do so. The results imply that irrationality is present in many different domains. Because the assumption of rationality is repeatedly violated, economic models are not able to properly describe and predict human behaviour. Does remedial education help disadvantaged children in the Czech Republic? : evaluation of education support programme
Lelovská, Adriána ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Koubek, Ivo (referee)
Programmes supporting education are one of the main activities of nongovernmental organizations. However, the information about effects of such programmes is often misleading, as it provides only limited clarification on improvement observed with the treated children. This thesis concentrates on a particular project of the Czech nongovernmental organization People in Need, where selected children from families endangered by social isolation received extra tutoring. In this study, the whole course of evaluation is described, revealing the process of data collection in the field. The main part of the thesis focuses on analysis of the programme, comparing the control and treatment groups before and after joining the programme using difference-in-differences method. The aim of the thesis is to show the true impacts of the remedial education on school performance, school absenteeism and school behaviour of the children. Moreover, the research will reveal the change that the programme had on the parents' attitude towards educating their children.
Advertising
Pokorný, Jiří ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Koubek, Ivo (referee)
This thesis defines advertising very broadly - as any information that form consumers such that they change their consumption. Microeconomic models assume that consumers choose their consumption independently, and do not take into account that their wants can be changed due to actions of other market participants, which this thesis criticizes. Advertising is modelled with the Cobb-Douglas function as a good that is complementary to the good that is advertised. The models show that advertising decreases the total welfare only in some cases. If it is profitable for a firm to advertise, its production usually increases the total welfare. 1
Informational cascades in economics
Hrachovec, Martin ; Koubek, Ivo (advisor) ; Chalupka, Radovan (referee)
Herd behavior is one of the fields that has not been explored much yet. Some approaches exist in sociology and psychology as well as in economy. One of the economical approaches is the one of informational cascades, building on the framework of Bayesian economics. This thesis first introduces Bayesian framework and then the basic models of informational cascades. Main aim of the thesis is to provide introduction to the topic and point out connections to the everyday life; therefore generalizations to the basic models are introduced and three practical cases of possible application of informational cascades elaborated.
Valuation of standing timber for the national accounts
Lauer, Luboš ; Koubek, Ivo (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
Valuing of forestry assets can be divided into three areas. Valuing of land, valuing of standing timber and valuing of other assets. This diploma thesis deals only with valuing of standing timber. In the view of the development in European Union, it is very likely that member states will have to value forestry assets soon, that means also valuation of standing timber. In the Czech Republic, a method already exists which is based on the the net present value. This method, however, shows some weaknesses. This diploma thesis compares more methods of valuation, presents its outcomes and tries to find the best suitable method in the conditions present in the Czech Republic. The following criteria were taken into consideration: the availability of the data, the infuence of the price of the wood on the valuation, complexity of the method and realistic value of the method. The following methods were found to have the best results: the consumption value method dividing the standing timber into four species and the simplified net present value method.
