Intellectual History of Czech Reform Communism 1968 - 1990
Andělová, Kristina ; Kopeček, Michal (advisor) ; Kolář, Pavel (referee) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
The main topic of the dissertation is the development and changes in the political thinking of Czech reform communism from 1968. While in the 1960s reform communism represented the dominant intellectual and political current, after the military invasion in August 1968 it gradually disappeared from the public discourse and was later completely suppressed by normalization propaganda and labeled as "counter- revolutionary" and "right-wing opportunist" ideology. The central questions of the thesis explore the changes that the political project of reform communism underwent during the twenty-one-year normalization period and the shifts that took place in the "horizon of expectation" of the Czechoslovak socialist opposition in the context of the intellectual and political changes of the 1970s and 1980s. The aim of the thesis is to explain the political perspectives of reform-communist intellectuals in the Czechoslovak opposition after 1968. They represented an important part of both domestic and especially exile opposition, which formed around the journal Listy. Some of them also played an important role in the creation of Charter 77 and its legalistic criticism. Nevertheless, their story does not fully fit into the traditional narrative of Czechoslovak dissent, as they never completely parted ways with...
Remembering together: Russian memory diplomacy as a soft power tool towards France
Bobbi, Emylie Aurore ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Incorported in Russia's public diplomacy arsenal towards France is memory diplomacy, according to which Russian authorities seek to integrate their own historical narratives with those of France and to export commemorative practices there. This often overlooked diplomacy type is one of the most covert soft power tools. This thesis examines how has Russia utilized memory diplomacy as a soft power towards France from 2000 to 2019. It argues that Russia has deliberately omited to promote its past role, whether direct or indirect, when local interpretations of a shared event in France are too fragmented. In more consensual conditions and particularly regarding the Second World War, Russia's memory diplomacy has been versatile in its methods, using both traditional and new public diplomacy tools. With soft power as a goal, the Russian authorities have targeted the diverse Russian diaspora communities in France and French politicians through this memory policy to have them relay the Kremlin's political position.
The disparity between de jure and de facto experiences of Romani women in the Czech Republic: An intersectional analysis
Angert, Michelle Elizabeth ; Asavei, Maria Alina (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee) ; Kubal, Agnieszka Maria (referee)
The Roma are historically one of the most discriminated against minorities in the world. Experiences are not universal throughout the Romani community, and Romani women in particular are subjected to greater injustices. This paper presents the vast de jure legislation from both the European Union and the Czech Republic as they relate to Romani women. These women fall under the jurisdiction of gender equality laws and the laws promoting Roma equality. While these laws, as written, strongly support anti-discrimination, the reality is actually very different, and I will demonstrate this disparity by highlighting the real experiences of Romani women in the education, healthcare, and employment sectors. Each example from these three sectors is classified and analysed using Leslie McCall and Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectionality methodologies. Romani women in the Czech Republic are placed at the intersection of three axes of discrimination: gender, ethnicity, and ethno-gender. This state, at the confluence of these axes, is unique to Romani women and must be acknowledged as salient before Romani women can fully achieve equality within society. Keywords: equality, gender, Roma minority, ethnicity, discrimination, Romani women, intersectionality 1
The politicization of the language issue in Ukraine: the discursive construction of the language, nationalism, and identity in Ukrainian media.
Hu, Qianrui ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Wilson, Andrew (referee) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
Despite already thirty years after gaining independence, Ukraine is still having difficulties forming an integral and united national identity. The language issue in Ukraine is a vivid example of the problem Ukraine is confronting. Numerous efforts have been made with the aim to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language, but the presence of the Russian language in Ukraine is still strong. Furthermore, the battle between these two languages often provokes huge public debates, and the debates do not revolve around the language use itself, but usually associate it with the wider debate of the Ukrainian common memory. Although much research has been devoted to analysing the narratives of relevant language laws, the discourses of Ukrainian politicians, or public opinions of the language issue and their links with people's political orientation, this thesis will focus on the discourses of media, an equally important site which represents and reproduces everyday nationalism. By adopting the methodology of critical discourse analysis, this work aims to uncover what are the common themes behind the everyday debate on the language issue in Ukrainian media and what are the typical mechanisms and strategies in the language use of media discourses to facilitate propagating their language ideologies. After a...
Comparison of the national identity of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians living in Belarus and Belarusians living in the Czech Republic
Kracíková, Karolína ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the national identity of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians. It is a group of people that is specific in that they were born after the fall of the Soviet Union and lived almost their entire life under the rule of Alexander Lukashenko. In the presented work I will focus on the comparison of the national identity of two groups of representatives of this generation. The first is a group of Belarusians living in Belarus and the second is a group of Belarusians living in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis will be to find out whether the representatives of the post-Soviet generation of Belarusians living in Belarus and the representatives of Belarusians living in the Czech Republic share a uniform definition of national identity. In order to answer this research question, a qualitative research was conducted with respondents from the ranks of Belarusians living in Belarus and Belarusians living in the Czech Republic. The research is focused on the categories that are traditionally considered to be pillars of national identity. These categories include, for example, the national language, historical identity, relationship to surrounding nations or relationship to national identity presented by President Lukashenko.
