Reservoirs - Brno, Zluty kopec (Yellow hill)

The diploma thesis deals with the proposal of new interventions within the area above the underground reservoirs in the area of the Žlutý kopec. Various urban structures, atmospheres and influences of surrounding, natural or urbanistic are encountered in the area. The place is unique for its location near the historic center of Brno, the potential of the green public priesthood within a built-up part of the city with a view of the city's landmark, Spilberk Castle. The aim of the work is to offer a dessign that responds to these impacts and links them in a design that complements existing underground reservoirs. It invites the inhabitants of the city, new visitors or tourists to regenerate body and soul, in the gallery or athletic center in the environment of reservoirs. The programme of the place offers both, the social space through a new cultural and visitor center but also soothing space in the form of a park.

Maternity hospital

A new concept of maternity hospital creates a place, where future mother is not stressed and where she feels free. A place, where birth is perceived as a common part of everyday life. It searches a compromise between birth at classical hospital environment on one side and birth at home on the other. Both aforementioned possibilities bring certain risks that are intended to be minimized using this concept. The idea is based on practice from birth facilities from Germany and creates new concept of so called „birth houses“ that is consistent with law in the Czech Republic. Design of maternity hospital should not be based solely on meeting technical requirements of a bulding, but first of all comfort of mothers should be taken into account to make them feel home.

NEW ON THE „OLD“ – Brno, Bratislavská - Stará Corner

New multifunctional building is situated on the corner of Bratislavska street and Stará street in city of Brno. The new building complets the block structure and opens up the corner to the public. The ground floor is a shopping area, in the wing perpendicular to the Bratislavska street are situated office spaces and in two towers and a hanged block are housing units, communication spaces and technology background. In the basement is located the parking area for residents and visitors of the building. The proposed building brings a new standard of living environment and inventiveness.

Diptera in food webs of wetland ecosystems

Families of the order Diptera are frequently found in freshwater wetlands, affecting nearly all trophic levels, serving as detritivores, herbivores and predators. Diptera are characterised by an enormous ecological variability of their larval life strategies, which often differ even within individual families. Their adults form an important connection between the aquatic environment of a wetland with its terrestrial surroundings. As a result, adults of various wetland Diptera may serve as pollinators, predators and a prey of other animals including humans. Until now, research of food webs in wetland ecosystems has been focused mainly on a few economically significant groups of Diptera such as mosquitoes, or has been focused on the role of Diptera in transfer of heavy metal from wetlands to other ecosystems. However, overall wetland dipteran diversity still remains understudied. Examining the roles of insects as well as other organisms in food webs is important for example to simulate possible consequences of introduction or extinction of certain species on ecosystems. Further research is therefore necessary to understand how do various dipteran taxa affect other organisms in wetlands as well as their surroundings. Predation risk and habitat complexity modify intermediate predator feeding rates and energetic efficiencies in a tri-trophic system

Many species show behavioural and physiological responses to predation risk, with important implications for their individual growth and development, but these responses may be context dependent. The goal of this study was to measure feeding and metabolic rates of intermediate invertebrate predators under different levels of predation risk and abiotic conditions to understand how they might affect their energetic efficiency, i.e. the ability to utilize available resources for individual growth. We ran laboratory experiments with larvae of three odonate species representing intermediate predators exposed to three levels of predation risk (none, visual cues, and visual and chemical cues) and two levels of habitat complexity (present vs. absent artificial submerged vegetation). We show that the response of intermediate predators to predation risk and its consequences for energetic efficiency are species specific and likely determined by their foraging and defense traits and their habitat domains.

Aquatic insect assemblages in littoral zones of ponds and other man-made habitats

This thesis focuses on aquatic insect and newt assemblages in fishponds and other man-made standing waters. It reviews the effects of fishpond management and restoration of post-mining sites on main aquatic taxa, with main focus on aquatic insects in the littoral zone. The next five chapters deal with long-term changes of the littoral habitats in fishponds and with various aspects of the importance of littoral habitats for aquatic organisms, mainly predatory insects and newts. The results are used to recommend management approaches aimed to increase biodiversity and conservation value of fishponds and other man-made habitats.

The attitudes of christian orthodox traditionalists towards the church calendar and attempts at its reform

The present thesis deals with the devotion and respect paid by the conservative Orthodox believers towards the Church Calendar which they adhere to. It follows their argumentation on several different levels. The historical exposition begins with the foundation of the Calendar and with the efforts to unite the dates of Pascha celebration. Then it proceeds to the Gregorian Calendar Reform in the 16th century, which broke the liturgical unity of Christendom. It ends with the change of the traditional Church Calendar by some of the local Orthodox churches in 1920s. The thesis focuses mainly on the objections of the traditionalists, who find the "New Style" unsuitable in the relation to the Canons of the Church and opposing the spirit of the Patristic tradition. A special attention is paid to the distortion of the liturgical order because of the new calendar which was introduced due to the ecumenical considerations. The main aim of the thesis is to understand the motivations of those who oppose the change of the Church Calendar - to ask, whether the Calendar requires astronomical accuracy, whether it necessarily expresses the unity of the Church and whether it has a deeper impact on the spiritual life of the Church and its faithful.

Russian Palestine Diploma thesis Vojtěch Kolář Praha 2013 Abstract This diploma thesis entitled "The Russian Palestine" deals with activities of the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian diplomatic corps designed to help Russian pilgrims to the holy places in Palestine as well as local Orthodox believers in the Levant in the 19th and beginning of 20th century. These activities were accompanied by considerable tension not only between Russian activists in Palestine and in Russia, but also in their encounters with Greek hierarchy in Jerusalem and Constantinople as well as with Western diplomats and missionaries pursuing Catholic and Protestant interests in the same area. The aim of this thesis is to offer an insight into motivations, ways and results of their activities in Palestine and to call attention to the difficulties they were facing. This work is neither an apology nor a criticism of either of the instruments of Russian influence - the Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (since 1847) and Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (since 1882) respectively.
