New evidence of settlement in the area of Prague in the older Roman-barbaric period
Bursák, Daniel ; Košnar, Lubomír (advisor) ; Břicháček, Václav (referee)
Represented study briefly reports about actual results of archaeological research of the older part of roman-barbaric period (end of 1. cent. BC - 2. cent. AD) that had been performed in an area of contemporary Prague. In this times Bohemia was, as known from the classical authors (G. I. Caesar, C. Tacitus, G. V. Paterculus), settled by Germanic tribes called Hermunduri and Marcomanni. In the area of Prague a lot of evidence of their settlements and graves could be found, that we can believe that this space was relatively widely occupied. The settlements refer, beside the density of inhabitation, also to the major prosecuted crafts, such as iron metallurgy and pottery production. It seems, that the area of Prague was one of the major (or today best archeologically researched) iron producing centre in Bohemia, witch was enabled by well available high quality iron ore. The graves tell us more about the society and its stratification, witch looks to be relatively high in this period.

Ways of Identifying Elites in the Area of the Central European Barbaricum of the Late Roman Period
Payne, David ; Beneš, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Košnar, Lubomír (referee)
The thesis pursues those aspects of the material culture found in settlements and burial sites that are connected to the manifestation of social elites in the Central European Barbaricum of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The author will compile relevant sources and critically evaluate various approaches regarding the options for recognising the self-presentation of elites by means of material culture identificators as well as in terms of cultural anthropology. The results will then be compared to the ways elites manifest themselves in the preceding time period. The author will also submit a proposal of possible methodical procedures that would lead to a synthetic understanding of the self-presentation and prestige goods phenomena.

Germanic Brooches of the Early Roman Period in Bohemia
Černý, Martin ; Košnar, Lubomír (advisor) ; Musil, Jiří (referee)
This dissertation evaluates Germanic fibulae of the Early Roman Period found in the area of Bohemia. The catalogue mainly consists of ca. 740 already published brooches. For the purpose of this dissertation, many of them have been newly documented as well as some so far unpublished finds which are introduced in the appendix of the dissertation. The dissertation sums up our present knowledge of particular types and variations of fibulae and makes their chronology more accurate - based on various combinations of brooches occurring in graves. Alternatively it deals with their connection to certain sex, age and social status. The most common type of brooches is by far the group of the eye-brooches (ca. 300pcs). Regarding the dating, the author managed to cast doubt upon information about some of the brooches found in the literature. The analysis has proven a long survival of some types of fibulae. Key words: brooches - fibulae - Early Roman Period - Germans - Chronology

Korený, Rastislav ; Košnar, Lubomír (advisor) ; Sláma, Jiří (referee) ; Varsik, Vladimír (referee)
Bohemia in the Merovingian age - end of the 5th - 6th century AD Rastislav Korený Mining Museum Příbram Abstract The following objectives have been pursued in the dissertation: 1. A new commented inventory of sites from the end of the 5th and 6th century (excluding coin finds) which should become a reliable basis for an analysis of the collected material. The last inventory of such kind was created by Bedřich Svoboda approximately sixty years ago, i.e. in the 1940-1950s, and it was not published until 1965. The need for a new revised inventory became apparent over the recent years. During the physical re-evaluation of earlier finds and related primary visual and textual documentation, which was carried out in the years 1996- 2013 (30 museum and non-museum collections, 4 separate archival collections and other information sources were revised), there was a striking discrepancy between the published data contained in the catalogue of the above mentioned monograph and reality. The excavations carried out after 1965 also, naturally, resulted in the expansion of the amount of available source material. 2. Because the material currently available from settlements was published by Ivana Pleinerová in 2007, the analysis of the collected data concentrated, in addition to the identification of chronologically more...
