Places of memory and cultural heritage. On the example of Kutná Hora
Kovářová, Linda ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
At the beginning of the research there was an interest in the monuments, above all in the monuments registered on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. In my thesis the monuments are perceived as places of memory. According to Pierre Nora places of memory are the places where the sources of our collective memory are grounded, concreted and expressed. The study of places of memory lies on the diffusion of two levels - the first states a certain tradition of memory, the other one describes them in the terms of historiographical documents. Therefore there is introduced also the matter of the monument preservation. As an example of examining the issues in field a strategy of designing a case study of a selected place of memory was chosen. A closer examination of the Czech town of Kutná Hora allows for a more detailed look at the processes through which the meaning attributed to World Heritage takes shape. A case study of Kutná Hora sheds light on the interpretation of World Heritage in the context of a small town and on the problem of the construction of the memory of the place. In 1995, Kutná Hora was picked for the World Heritage List, and thus by definition became a part of a heritage of "outstanding universal value and interest". In the nomination document the emphasis was especially put on the interpretation...

Bayram, Muhammet Sami ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Martykánová, Darina (referee) ; Heltai, Gyöngyi (referee)
The second half of the 19th Century was a remarkable period in the history of the transformation of Istanbul's Pera district, which can also be detected in the history of its western type theatre buildings, passages, cultural activities, district regulations, planning and establishment of other public and private spaces. The scope of the study will focus on the period between the announcement of the Edict of Gulhane (1839) till Second Constitutional Era (1908). I have chosen the Pera district, also known as Beyoğlu/Taksim for this case study, because it had quite specific functions in the city. It had hosted various ethnical groups throughout its long history, which was also the case in the middle of the 19th century, and the cultural harmony influenced the district's social life. I intend to test this hypothesis by applying Charles Landry's creativity city concept with Pera's cultural district at the end of the thesis. I will apply the aforementioned concepts and examine the remarkable modern type constructions of the district and their history. I will show that gradual growth of the amount and intensity of interactions between the West and the Ottoman Society created a cultural infrastructure, which in turn created a cosmopolitan area in Pera. Social and daily life started to change with the...

Migration, language and integration (Comparison of the Netherlands and Flanders in the 1970s and 1980s)
Vokáčová, Martina ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Klusáková, Luďa (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the Dutch and Flemish policies towards immigrants in the 1970s and 1980s and the role attributed to language in them. It examines the arguments and concepts by which both the policies were motivated and legitimated and evaluates critically their usual periodization. It points out the risk of a wrong reading of the Dutch "tweesporenbeleid" of the 1970s as based on multiculturalism instead of expectation of return of the immigrants into their home country. It concentrates on the Minderhedennota of 1981/83 as the main turning point leading to the interpretation of the allochton-issue as socio-economic problem and examines the public debate on the basis of documents of the Dutch parliament. The acquisition of Dutch as second language, it states, always played a crucial role in the policies. Since the 1980s, more attention was paid to evaluation of school curricula in terms of non-discrimination of non-native speakers. In the Flemish case, less systematical approaches were stated. The policies were less centralized and crucially influenced by the fact of bilinguism and the competition between Dutch and French in Belgium. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Radiměřská, Božena ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee)
First of all, the thesis "Trans-Rhenic Europe on the Mental Map of the Seventeenth Century English Traveller" dealt with the problem of the other European identity as reflected in the English travel writing of the seventeenth century. The crucial questions were if any coherent whole was distinguished on the mental map of the 17th century English traveller in the area of "Trans-Rhenic Europe", and what could be the uniting characteristics in cultural terms. By "Trans-Rhenic Europe", the geographical area delimited by rivers Rhine and Dnieper from West and East, by Baltic from North, and Turkish border from South was meant.
Comparison of the Decolonisation Process in Indonesia and Malaysia
Šebek, Ivo ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Janáč, Jiří (referee) ; Křížová, Markéta (referee)
The author of the submitted work compares the process of decolonization in Southeast Asia on the examples of Indonesia and the Federation of Malaya. Although both countries have much in common, culturally, historically, or geographically for example; the process of gaining independence from the colonial powers differed in many aspects. Text analyses probable reasons for these differences by comparative study of economic, social and political histories of both territories in the 19th and especially in the first half of the 20th century. Taking into account the extensive subject matter the analysis focuses only on selected areas that seem to be essential to the distinct development of decolonization in researched countries based on the existing literature. That involves particularly the approach of colonial countries (Great Britain and Netherlands), the course of World War II, solving the ethnical issue and the role of local political elites. This work also covers brief summary of economic and political development in the period preceding the declaration of independence. Key words: Decolonization Southeast Asia Indonesia Malayan federation colonialism
Historical Examples and the Search for National Identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Roman Dmowski. A Comparative Study
Scholz, Milan ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Doubek, Vratislav (referee) ; Kolář, Pavel (referee)
The doctoral thesis deals with comparative analysis of historical examples in the search for national identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937) and Roman Dmowski (1864-1939). Both Masaryk and Dmowski belonged to prominent representatives of public and political life in their countries at the end of the 19th and in first decades of the 20th centuries. The question of national identity is a theme often associates with their life and work. Masaryk and Dmowski influenced Czech and Polish politics, political and intellectual thought before 1914. During the First World War, they were leaders of Czechoslovak and Polish politics in West European emigration (Masaryk as the president of the Czechoslovak National Committee, Dmowski as the president of the Polish National Committee). Nevertheless, in the postwar period, their career diverged. Masaryk became president of Czechoslovakia and symbol of the Czechoslovak identity, Dmowski represented rather the opposition against mainstream development in postwar Poland. The first and the second parts of the thesis deal with Masaryk's (first part) and Dmowski's (second part) concept of historical examples in search of national identity in context of their thought and life. Therefore, these parts are organized chronologically and pay attention to...

Perception of Armenian Question for Czech Readership (1878 - 1925)
Jandák, Marek ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Košťálová, Petra (referee)
This bachelor thesis is devoted to the analysis of reflection of the Armenian Question in crucial years 1878 - 1925. The main aim is to examine one historical issue on different levels with use of two case studies demanding different methodological approach. The opening chapter is focusing on the image of Armenians and Turks in Czech public sphere. The second part of my thesis is dealing with changing image of violence committed on Armenian population in the late Ottoman Empire in the Czech language daily Národní politika. In the third chapter I am paying attention to the writings of Czech traveler and humanist Karel Hansa. My study of the journal Národní listy is focusing on approach of the newspaper to mass violence and humanitarian problems and it takes a form of textual, quantitative and contents analysis. The chapter 4 about Karel Hansa is worked out in a narrative style with use of anthropological approach. My attention in both cases is focusing on phenomena of indifference or active help in the time of genocide and humanitarian crises through a prism of study with subtitle Psychic numbing and genocide by American psychologist Paul Slovic. Outcome of my research of Národní politika journal is that Czech society was remarkably passive and world news in the newspaper were quite unoriginal,...
Unesco World Heritage Sites: Ways of Presenting & and Interpreting the Pas. As seen in: Kutná Hora, Hiroshima Villa Romana del Casale
Kovářová, Linda ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Sonkoly, Gábor (referee)
This thesis deals with a specific group of historical sites called World Heritage, which are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It characterizes the basic elements of the UNESCO World Heritage idea as a cultural and social process, which engages in acts of remembering that work to create ways to understand, present and interpret the past within the present social frameworks. The thesis brings to the attention a range of viewpoints about the nature of heritage in general and the UNESCO World Heritage in specific that have emerged in the relatively new area of academic interdisciplinary heritage studies. For the purposes of exploring different aspects of the World Heritage phenomenon, following themes of heritage discourse have been developed: remembering and making public use of the past, the UNESCO approach and the ways of presenting and interpreting the past. In order to give a sense of what World Heritage looks like on the ground this thesis details some aspects of three different World Heritage sites. To study such matters in the physical world a strategy of undertaking case studies of three specific UNESCO sites and employing the methods of direct observation and a fieldwork were chosen. Closer examinations of the Czech medieval town of Kutná Hora, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park...
