Not so "Traditional" Healing: Constructions of Illness Reality and Spirit Possession in a Rapidly Changing Society in Venda, South Africa
Řezáčová, Vendula ; Kandert, Josef (advisor) ; Kotalova, Jitka (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The present thesis "Not so 'Traditional' Healing: Constructions of Illness Reality and Spirit Possession in a Rapidly Changing Society in Venda, South Africa" aims to analyze socio-cultural and political aspects of 'traditional' healing which had been the focus of fieldwork of the author in 'Venda', South Africa (in the period between 2004-6). In the first section of the thesis the author has shown that the medical concepts and symbols marked as 'traditional' have not formed a closed, time-less system. On the contrary, they have reflected and shaped far-reaching socio-cultural changes in the post-apartheid dispensation characterised by the neo-liberal market reforms, congealing of socio-economic inequalities, transformations of gender identities and the politics of 'tradition' and identity. 'Traditional healing' has thus been constituted through a constant process of (re)invention of symbols and practices which have referred to the 'Venda past' while aiming to delineate boundaries of 'tradition' in relation to biomedicine. The second section of the thesis has focussed on the phenomenon of ancestor spirit possession which has also constituted the means through which 'traditional' healers have been recruited and their claims to knowledge and healing power have been legitimized. In contrast to the...

Iskanderova, Tatiana ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
The main issue of the dissertation paper was to provide a comparative analysis of ethnic minorities representation in the Czech and Kyrgzystan media discurses in the 90s of the 20th century. Both of the above mentioned countries have undergone a paradigm change, which in the terminology of the four theories of press changed the so-called soviet paradigm for libertarian one. The aim of the research was to demonstrate that it is possible to use the comparative analysis also in regard to ethnicities (ethnic minorities), cultures and national minority organizations that are geographically distant and typologically different. The research is based on comparison of four researches developed by the following authors: Petra Klvačová, Tomáš Bitrich: Jak se (ne)píše o cizincích, Věra Malkova: Этнические образы в республиканских газетах. Опыт этносоциологического исследования, Stuartem Hall (The spectacle of the "Other"), Bernard Berelson, Patricia J. Salter (Majority and Minority American's: An analysis of magazine fiction). The dissertation analyzes current potential and possible future development of new and traditional media. The main purpose of this paper is to find and describe the possibilities of news sites development in the near future.. After theoretical analysis of traditional and new media, I propose three dominant influences for nowadays media: participatory culture, news content changes and technologies. Impacts of suburbanization on a village - case study of Velebov village
Puchálková, Pavla ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
The process of residential suburbanization, frequently in form of urban sprawl, takes place in the developed countries since mid 18th century. On the other hand, in the Czech Republic it is relatively new phenomenon, heavily appearing since 90s of the 20th century. Although many previous studies were focused on newly built suburbs, all of them took place in the surroundings of the biggest Czech cities. In the first part of the thesis the author sums up historical development of suburbanization's forms (by analyzing the available documents) and focuses especially on modern suburbanization processes in the Great Britain, USA and the Czech Republic, consequences of suburbanization in form of urban sprawl and effect on existence and function of communities in new suburbs. The author then uses a case study approach to study Velebov village (which is the target of suburbanization from Karlovy Vary) and, while using methods of analysis of the documents, qualitative and quantitative interviewing of residents, focuses on composition of inhabitants, social contacts and overall social cohesion within the village. Research findings mostly support results of previous studies and thus imply universality of suburbanization process within the Czech Republic. Composition of new inhabitants is quite different from...

Fischerová, Jana ; Cirklová, Jitka (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
This thesis is aimed on phenomenon of religious conversion to Christianity in the contemporary Czech society. The term of religious conversion is defined here as "conversion" from "disbelief" to "faith". Conversion is examined under qualitative research, which is based on eight semi structured interviews with converts. Based on the collected data individual trajectories of conversion were created. Further, a generalized model of process of the religious conversion was created. This model consists of phases which are: admission of existence of the spiritual outreach of our material world, "religious seeking", getting into contact with church, religious group or Christian doctrine itself. Afterwards comes either a phase of rational acknowledgment of God's existence or its emotional confirmation ("religious experience"). Then we talk about the actual conversion what is usually followed by baptism. On the basis of data obtained in this research functions that religion has in life of an individual were identified. These functions are ability to handle meaning of life and its transience and fear of death better, it brings the self-acceptance and helps by establishing meaningful rules to conduct own life.

Maori Challenges to Mainstream Education. Case Study of Native Schools in New Zealand
Kulhánková, Jana ; Moravcová, Mirjam (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee) ; Šatava, Leoš (referee)
This study gives an overview of the development of Maori forms of education in New Zealand and situates them within the realm of cultural revitalization. Secondly, it reflects the meaning of the education in Maori language and culture from the perspective of teachers and parents in Maori schools. The focus is on the contemporary Maori schools where Maori language is the medium of communication and Maori cultural values, knowledge, and customs are the norm. Since they are actively pursuing the goal of revitalizing and perpetuating Maori culture and language, these schools represent a symbol of Maori identity. My study refers to the existing research as well as to my continual field work in a kohanga reo kindergarten, and numerous visits to a bilingual unit and a kura kaupapa school in Dunedin, New Zealand. Rather than finding new facts, I attempt to examine the workings of a particular institution, and process of cultural learning and maintaining culture through learning Maori language. I come from the sociocultural approach to learning, in which cultural socialization parallels the language learning techniques utilised in kohanga reo. Eventually, this helps building one's cultural awareness and self-esteem. What are the particular techniques and activities ensuring this process of cultural...
