Effect of cement by-pass dust on properties alkali-activated slag
Janíčková, Vlasta ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Bílek, Vlastimil (advisor)
This masters thesis deals with influence of cement bypass kiln dust on physico-mechanical properties of alkali activated slag and influence of chosen compounds of cement bypass kiln dust on alkali activated slag. Using alkali activated slag is limited by its shrinkage. The setting time with different amount of cement bypass kiln dust and its chosen compounds (CaO, KCl and K2SO4) were measured by isotermal and isoperibolic calorimetry too. The strength and length changes of the mixtures with different amount of cement bypass kiln dust were measured. Samples were analysed by X-Ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It has been found that the increasing addition of dust reduce setting time, flexural and compresive strength and shrinkage. Presence of free CaO was found being one of the reasons for accelerated setting. KCl and K2SO4 have retarding effect but influece of free CaO prevails even for its lower contents. Long-term properties evolution is strongly dependent on curing regime due to potential volume expansion.
The influence of triaxial deformation of aggregates on properties of concrete
Fójcik, Tomáš ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Šoukal, František (advisor)
This diploma work takes focus in elastic modulus of unbound granular aggregates, which was determined by repeat load triaxial test and in deformation behaviour of unbound granular aggregates - elastic and plastic deformation. It was examine the propriety of this aggregate for its service as underlying granular material in pavement. Further, there was observed the influence of elastic modulus of unbound granular aggregates on concrete characteristics - compressive and bending strength. Finally, it was observed the influence of individual fractions of aggregates on its elastic modulus and strength of concrete.
Preparation of geopolymeric binders for toxic metals inhibition
Jevická, Lucie ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Šoukal, František (advisor)
This thesis deals with preparation of geopolymeric binders for inhibition of toxic elements, especially arsenic. It studies influence of content progress of different phases in prepared binders on leachability of As during the setting. The aim of this study is to determine the type of inhibition or the cause of leachability of As in prepared binders respectively. Fly ash from high-temperature coal combustion, slag, cement kiln dust and sodium hydroxide solution were used for experimental works. FT-IR, TG-DTA, XRD analyses after different hydration times were used. The leachates were analyzed by ICP-MS. Calorimetric measurements of tested mixtures fresh pastes were implemented to learn about setting process. Hardened binder specimens were tested for bending and compressive strength.
Study of synthetic sandstones preparation possibilities
Solik, Jaroslav ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This thesis explores the possibility of developing synthetic sandstones based on alkaline-activated (geopolymer) binders. The goal is to design an appropriate connective system of optimal concentration, so that the prepared material (artificial stone) showed similar characteristics as natural. The experimental section summarizes the experiments that explore several different alkali connective systems. The aim is to compare the properties of binders prepared from methakaolin (Mefisto K-05 and L-05) alkali-activated by sodium or potassium water glass. For comparison with these connective systems were also prepared samples of commercially supplied geopolymer binder called Baucis
Hybrid systems based on alkali activated materials and Portland cement
Bradová, Lada ; Koplík, Jan (referee) ; Kalina, Lukáš (advisor)
The most promising route to improve the sustainability of cement is to produce the blended Portland cements with supplementary cementitious materials. Blast furnace slag (BFS) is one of the significant pozzolan source used worldwide in blended cements contributing to lowering of the environmental impact of cement industry. On the other hand, the replacement of the Portland clinker is connected with the undesirable effects such as reduction of early strength development. In order to overcome this disadvantage, the study deals with the development of hybrid cements in which the utilization of solid waste alkaline activator quickly awakens the pozzolanic properties of BFS. The new types of blended alkali activated cements were designed to meet the European standard EN 197 1 and classified to the Blastfurnace CEM III/C cements in accordance with the mechanical, physical, chemical and durability requirements. The effect of alkali activation caused an increase in early (2 days) compressive strength development in comparison with reference sample. The setting time was delayed two times which is also interesting from the point of view of concrete production. Moreover, this non traditional hybrid alkali activated Portland cement provides considerable ecologically and economically potential.
Study of air-entraining admixtures in alkali-activated materials
Kiripolský, Tomáš ; Koplík, Jan (referee) ; Kalina, Lukáš (advisor)
Air entraining admixtures are surfactants, that are commonly used in Portland cement materials, because they form and stabilize small air bubbles distributed in the binder, thereby changing the pore size distribution. The aim of these additives is to increase the durability of the cured binder, especially in climatic conditions, where it must withstand low temperatures, and simultaneously improving the workability in the plastic state. The effect of air entraining admixtures in alkali-activated slag was studied for certain properties. Air entraining admixtures were able to entrain the air in the alkali-activated matrix, they changed the pore size distribution, which resulted in a reduction in capillary pressure in the porous complex, and there was a reduction of shrinkage under autogenous conditions, respectively. The improvement of workability is certainly also positive, but on the other hand there has been a bad effect on flexural strength and compressive strength. The morphology of the air entrained binder was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and simultaneously the effect of air entrained admixtures on hydration was observed by isothermal calorimetry.
Possibilities of Chloride Ions Binding in Alkali-Activated Slag Systems
Chadima, Jan ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Bílek, Vlastimil (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with chloride binding in alkali activated slag and tries to bind chlorides by adding metakaolin, alumina and cement bypass kiln dust to form Friedel’s salt in alkali activated system. These admixtures were selected as a potential sources of aluminate ions that are necessary for the formation of this salt. The amount of chlorides in solid samples and in leachates was determined by Volhard titration. To find out phase composition X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis were used. Chloride ions were bound in by far the greatest extent in the pastes containing cement bypass dust because only in this case Friedel’s salt was formed. In the case of alumina and metakaolin chlorides were bound likely via adsorption on C-S-H phase.
Possibilities of the utilization of the waste sand from the water glass production in building industry
Bílek, Vlastimil ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
Nowadays, the waste sands from the water glass production have no utilization and due to high alkali content are considered as a dangerous waste. So the aim of this thesis is to find and study some possibilities of their utilization in the building industry. First of all, some necessary analysis of these sands were performed and then some advantages and disadvantages of their application for production of materials based on portland cement and alkali activated materials were studied. Characteristics of fresh and hardened pastes, mortars and concretes containing these waste sands were determined. The most tested properties were their workability and their compressive and flexural strength. Close attention for the risks of alkali-silica reaction and for options of its suppressing by the mineral admixtures was paid.
Side products from power industry as the raw material base for the future
Marko, Michal ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This work reacts to the worldwide problem related to looking for alternative sources of raw materials. The work deals with analyzing samples of high temperature and fluid fly ashes produced by power plants in the Czech Republic, followed by experimental verification of possibilities to separate some desired components. Based on the elemental and phase compositions, the possibility of aluminum, titanium, and iron extraction to sulfuric acid solution and subsequent selective precipitation using suitable separeation methods was designed and tested in a laboratory scale. Separation of selected elements from the fly ash matrix was carried out at room temperature and then at the boiling point of the used solvent.
