Current Problems in 2D Numerical Modelling of Water Flow in the River Channels

Currently, the use of two-dimensional numerical models in modelling water flow in river channels and floodplains is quite common. The quality of hydraulic calculation results is influenced by the number of input parameters. However, crucial in this context is primarily the availability of calibration data. Commonly used data from historical flood records are often burdened with significant uncertainties and, in many cases, are completely lacking. One option to ensure suitable calibration data is to measure flow rates and velocity fields in selected calibration profiles, e.g., using the ADCP method (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler). The presented article showcases the authors' experiences with the calibration of a 2D numerical model applied to a real location, specifically using the mentioned method. The focus of the calibration lies mainly in the values of Manning’s roughness coefficients and parameters of turbulent models. The conclusion of the article includes a discussion of the results and recommendations for further research directions in the field, which appear promising for practical applications.
VD Vlachovice - concrete gravity dam

As a part of this bachelor thesis an alternative design of the concrete gravity dam VD Vlachovice was made, to the already design of the earth-fill dam. The design of the outlet works, intake and spillway were also carried out as a part of the study. The introduction of the thesis includes a description of the site and an evaluation of local conditions. The next part deals with the stability of the dam and the load-bearing capacity of the subsoil. Furthermore, the design of the outlet works, intake and spillway were made. A part of the thesis also deals with the transformation of flood by the water reservoir. Finally, drawings and simplified 3D model of the dam were created. The documents necessary for the creation of the work were provided by company AQUATIS a.s. with the permission of Povodí Morava, s.p.
Diversion headwork on Smolinka river

Within the preparation of the dam Vlachovice, it is planned to construct a diversion work on the Smolinka river to ensure the transfer of water from the Smolinka basin to the Vlachovice reservoir. The diversion work is designed by AQUATIS a.s. and is equipped with a sluice gate and a spillway with a crest intake. This thesis deals with the determination of recommendations for the implementation of modifications to the design of the diversion work. Recommendations resulting from the work should lead to reliable functionality of the object both from the point of view of water intake and from the point of view of continuous transport of sediments through the Smolinka river. A two-dimensional numerical model simulating sediment transport and three-dimensional numerical model simulating water flow are used in the thesis to determine recommendations for design modifications.
