Use of sport contexts in statistical problems for upper secondary schools
Koštejnová, Kateřina ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
This thesis explores the use of sports-related themes in secondary school level sta- tistical problems and exercises. It summarizes basic statistical terminology appropriate for various education levels. The core then consists of a set of original statistical sports- themed problems and their solutions. These problems are split into three chapters based on the theoretical foundation they require. The first chapter deals with location parame- ters as well as reading from graphs and their construction, and it utilizes tables in the problems' formulation. The next chapter then focuses on the properties of dispersion, and the last one introduces correlation. The problems presented in the first chapter make use of football themes, the ones from the second chapter are ice-hockey based, and lastly, the problems from the third chapter mix themes from various sports. Each presented exercise is preceded with a list of definition necessary for finding the solution. The thesis also includes questions, whose solutions require university level Mathematics. These are augmented with the necessary theoretical foundation as well but it assumes knowledge of integral calculus. This problem collection may be used by secondary school Mathematics educators. The last section demonstrates use of statistics, particularly hypothesis...
Solving strategies of word problems in their historical development
Hejdrychová, Kateřina ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
Title: Solving strategies of word problems in their historical development Abstract This thesis deals with word problems which can be solved by using linear equations. Its aim is to create a collection of current and historical problems selected from different periods of the history of mathematics. In the first part, the level of emphasis put on the use of word problems in the teaching of mathematics by the Framework Education Programme is shown. The contribution of word problems to developing mathematical and financial literacy is also highlighted The second part deals with the history of mathematics focusing on the domains of equations and word problems, both from a worldwide and Czech perspective. The third part is a collection of type problems. The problems are grouped according to context in the way it is usually done in Czech educational materials for primary and secondary schools: problems dealing with the division of a whole into unequal parts, problems dealing with movement, problems dealing with joint work and problems dealing with mixtures. The collection contains three types of problems. Current problems are adopted from contemporary textbooks and collections of problems for schools. Historical problems are taken from historically significant resources from different countries. Outdated problems...
Use of Japanese Puzzles in Teaching Mathematics at Primary School
Pěničková, Barbora ; Kloboučková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with Japanese puzzles and their use in teaching mathematics at primary school. Its main aim is to verify if it is possible for the pupils to achieve comparable results with older pupils and adult Sudoku solvers supposing that these learners are systematically guided through an escalating set of Sudoku puzzles. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on the history of Sudoku, several strategies of its solving, other examples of Japanese puzzles and also on Sudoku in the context of its use at school. The practical part describes a series of experiments with pupils of the first, later second grade of a primary school, which were conducted in order to verify the hypothesis of this thesis.
Selected games for teaching mathematics with emphasis on the game Folding
Prokopec, Michal ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
The aim of the thesis was to create and trial the game Folding. This game is useful in mathematic lessons for practicing definitions, correct recording of steps of construction in geometry and basically any field where precise language is required. Two experiments were conducted and evaluated. The result is that the activity is particularly useful for practicing the above skills but requires a thorough preparation and is not useful for numerical exercises. The thesis is supplemented with an overview of research dealing with the usage of games in mathematics classes. A list of thirteen games which can be used in mathematics classes is an important part of the thesis. The games are briefly described and my own observations and experience with their use in teaching are included.
Systems of linear equations at the primary school - pupils' problems and teachers' views
Kliner, Jiří ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
The goal of the diploma thesis was to describe critical moments for solving systems of linear equations at the primary school. First, various methods of solving systems of two linear equations with two unknowns are summarized, the history of systems of linear equations is briefly outlined and the theme is described from the point of view of curricular documents. Based on the review of literature, the critical moments and types of mistake made by pupils are described. My own research used the mixed research strategy, where the main strategy was qualitative and the secondary strategy was quantitative. The research consisted of semi-structured interviews with four mathematics teachers, the preparation and realization of a questionnaire for primary school pupils and the creation, realization and analysis of a didactic test. The main results of the thesis consists of the description of the most frequent pupils' problems when solving systems of linear equations, the didactic analysis of textbooks and teachers' views of the topic and its teaching. Keywords: linear equations and their systems, pupils' problems, mistakes, semi-structured interviews, didactic test Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Mathematical problems from real life for secondary schools using an interactive white board
Hyánek, Martin ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
Mathematical problems from real life for secondary schools using an interactive white board. (Diploma thesis.) ABSTRACT The diploma thesis deals with the possibility of IWB application in the teaching of mathematics at a secondary school. The aim was to examine its didactical potential for the teaching of mathematical functions. For this purpose, I created and described three interactive presentations in programs Smart Notebook and Math Tools focused on elementary mathematical functions that are illustrated on examples from real life and interconnect knowledge from diverse subjects. Namely it is a quadratic function and its application in sport, exponential function and its application in geography and goniometric function sinus and its application in music. One of the presentations was applied in practice. The thesis reflects the experience from teaching and also looks into how students perceive using the IWB during teaching. It was confirmed that the teacher's role is in the use of IWB is indispensable. The theoretical part of the thesis contextualizes the IWB application from historical, technical and didactical points of view. The thesis can serve as an inspiration for the practical use of IWB in mathematics teaching. Key words: interactive white board (IWB), interactive teaching, Smart Notebook, Math...
Language recognition based on the frequency analysis
Čadek, Jan ; Jančařík, Antonín (advisor) ; Zhouf, Jaroslav (referee)
TITLE: Language recognition based on the frequency analysis SUMMARY: The aim of this bachelor thesis is to use the basic cryptoanalytic aid - frequency analysis - for the recognition of the language of a text (or of a cryptogram). The first chapter is devoted to the history of cryptology. Chapter 2 focuses on frequency analysis, its principle is explained on a simple example. In the third part, there is the description of three programs for language recognition. Last chapter compares the results, which I gained through my programs, with the affinity of European languages as described in linguistics. One of the conclusions of my work is that the real affinity of languages is well approximated using the program analysis. KEY WORDS: frequency analysis, cryptology, European languages, recognition, relationships of languages
Word problems at the Waldorf secondary schools
Daniel, Radovan ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee)
The theoretical part of the diploma thesis contains didactic analysis of word problems, that is the definition of a word problem, classification of word problems from various perspectives and methods of solving word problems, according to czech specialists in didactics of mathematics. The second part describes the teaching of mathematics at the secondary Waldorf schools with an emphasis on teaching in main lesson blocks. The core of the work lies in the experimental part which consists of two sections. The first section describes the preparation, implementation and evaluation of educational experiments on the subject of word problems. The educational experiment was conducted in the first class of the Waldorf lyceum in Prague in the academic year 2014/2015. All days of the main lesson block are described. Part of the reflection of the teacher and an observer who participated in the entire main lesson block is the part of thesis. The practical part continues with the pupil's solving strategies analysis. Pupils wrote a didactic test with word problems once before the teaching experiment and once after it. The analysis of each problem is following, in which the interesting phenomena that emerged in the pupils' solutions are explored. The conclusion summarises the main points of the research conducted...
