Analysis of Potential Impact of Contemporary Music and Lyrics on Gender Construction from the Audience Perspective
Marxtová, Kateřina ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the topic of gender in music and also its perception by the audience. The research topic was chosen for the increasing consumption of music media and for the lack of research focused on gender in music and on the perception of music lyrics in general. The research part uses both the qualitative content analysis of music lyrics contained in the sample of Billboard Top Charts songs for the past 50 years (between years 1970-2019), and also semi-structured qualitative interviews on a multi-generation sample. Included in the content analysis was the total of 500 songs, interviewed were 8 respondents of various genders and ages to accomplish a diverse sample. The topics of males, females and their relationship proved to be the dominant topics in the research music sample, and it also went through a significant development over time. The research identified a movement from metaphoric language to explicit, at the same time it identified a development of the metaphors. Also observed was the inclination to communicate different topics between male and female artists. Women were more focused on the topics of love, love triangle, end of the relationship, and submission. Men focused predominantly on the topics of sex, intimacy, and in the recent years also on money and addictions,...
Determination of oxidative stress biomarkers by HPLC
Váňová, Nela ; Jun, Daniel (advisor) ; Doležal, Rafael (referee) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
and keywords Although reactive oxygen and nitrogen species have a fundamental role in physiological processes occurring in living organisms, their overproduction induced by endogenous and/or exogenous sources may lead to serious imbalance in redox homeostasis, damage to intracellular components and thus, dramatically alter their function or even trigger cell death. Oxidative stress is believed to be very important mechanism of toxicity of xenobiotics, including drugs, and may be responsible for the development of their unwanted side effects. Considering a very low number of studies evaluating oxidative stress after the treatment with oxime reactivators of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in vivo and in vitro, the relationship between their toxicity and generation of specific biomarkers of oxidative damage is not still fully understood. In order to monitor antioxidant/prooxidant properties of drugs, high performance liquid chromatography method coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for simultaneous determination of two biomarkers of oxidative stress, malondialdehyde (MDA) and 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), in biological matrices was developed. Validation of this LC-MS/MS method demonstrated the acceptable appreciable selectivity, accuracy, intra- and interday precission, and recovery of sample...
Social engagement of artists: a case study of music albums by singer Katarzia and rappers Vec and Tono S.
Krchová, Petra ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
Diploma thesis named Social engagement of artists: a case study of music albums by singer Katarzia and rappers Vec and Tono S. is a case study about social engagement of artists, concretely its representation in album Antigona from slovak singer Katarzia and in album Ultrazvuk by two slovak rappers Vec and Tono S. Thesis concentrates on social status of men and women, on a murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and situation in the society after it, and on the representation of those two topics in the eyes of artists of music albums and in the eyes of journalists in czech and slovak online magazines, who discuss and write about those music albums. Written documents, such as song lyrics, interviews, articles and reviews are analysed qualitatively, by the methods of a grounded theory. Topics, whom appear during the research, are afterwards labelled, being put into mutual contexts and illustrated by presenting concrete examples from materials. Final findings are afterwards reviewed, and its character revised with the help of two research questions, that are: "How do artists of music albums and journalists discussing those albums represent murder of a journalist and social situation in the society after it in song lyrics, interviews, articles and reviews?" and "How do artists of music albums and journalists...

Bartlová, Natálie ; Turek, Pavel (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The bachelor thesis Analysis of Contemporary Rock Magazines Based in the Czech Republic analyzes the content representation of the domestic music scene compared to the international music scene using the example of Fakker, Headliner and Full Moon magazines. It also looks at how this representation affects the magazines' sales and success from the point of view of their chief editors. The analysis is done on 2018 issues, using the method of quantitative content analysis ("hard data"), which is supplemented with interviews with chief editors of these magazines ("soft data"). The theoretical part provides a short introduction to the history of music magazines in the Czech Republic before and after 1989, the year of the Velvet Revolution. Then the magazines Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner are summarized. The methods of quantitative analysis and of collecting data are explained in the practical part. These methods were used on three randomly selected issues of Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner from 2018. The data is recorded in a codebook. The quantitative analysis is followed by transcripts of interviews with the chief editors of Fakker (Petr "Ape" Adámek), Full Moon (Michal Pařízek) and Headliner ("Honza" Vedral). The summary outlines the results of the analysis and the contents of the interviews. As a...

Bureš, Jan ; Štěrbová, Petra (advisor) ; Kujovská Krčmová, Lenka (referee) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis Candidate: Mgr. Jan Bureš Supervisor: Doc. PharmDr. Petra Štěrbová, Ph.D. Title of Thesis: Analytical and bioanalytical evaluation of novel potential drugs from the group of iron chelators High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) gained its unprecedented position among bioanalytical techniques due to its effectivity and versatility. If tuned properly, it can separate complex mixtures and can be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis simultaneously, usually within a short time. Reliability of the HPLC methods is proven by their validation performed according to accepted guidelines. Iron chelation is considered to be an effective concept of treatment of various pathologies - from iron overload disease to cancer or neurodegenerative disorders. To develop new chelators for these indications it is important to investigate their structure- activity relationship, the fate of the drug in organism and its relationship to biological effects and toxicity etc. Modern analytical methods are essential tools for these studies. The first part of this work presents validated LC-UV and LC-MS methods for assay of aroylhydrazone iron chelators and related pro-drugs in biological...
Contemporary underground subculture and Voknoviny
Šeliga, Vojtěch ; Hroch, Miloš (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis explores the role of the contemporary underground subculture. The study critically deals with the "underground myth": the idea that the underground community had a major influence on the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. The last topic is the role of Voknoviny, a magazine considered a fundamental medium of the current subculture. The theoretical part of the work focuses on history of the underground subculture. Furthermore, the theoretical part describes popular culture and subcultures theories. Also, the historians' view of the normalization proces and the role the underground played in the fall of the communist regime. The principal part of the work analyses interviews with four figures of the underground community. The research sample was designed to cover the main significant "structures and institutions" of the underground. The analysis of the interviews is complemented by the content analysis of the Voknoviny magazine. The results show that while the current underground is based on the tradition of its pre-revolution predecessor, it now fits within the dominant society framework. The interviewees agreed that the role of the underground in the collapse of the communist regime lied primarily on uniting the opposition. Although Voknoviny has a larger readership than...

Mass media are very present in all of Manson's career and that is the main interest of this thesis. The first part chronologically presents the artist's life and career and mentions the biggest controversies, which arose in the context of his work. The second part deals with the Czech media and looks into the trend of how was the public informed about Manson via musical and non-musical periodicals and their online versions since the international breakthrough in 1996 until today. Third part presents the survey on Marilyn Manson and also on the relations of controversy and media in general.

Pospíchalová, Anežka ; Hroch, Miloš (advisor) ; Lebedová, Veronika (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is the subversive potential of nudity in the visual album Lemonade by African-American singer Beyoncé. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the terms popular culture, popular music, visual album, pornography or erotica, but also explains the basic theoretical approaches that apply to the issue of the visual album. It examines the theoretical reflection of popular culture from the point of view of media and gender studies, presents the genesis of feminism and its media reflection, popular culture and pornography, the relationship of ethnicity and popular culture as well as theoretical approaches to understanding this relationship. Based on the qualitative image analysis of the album, the short complementary analysis of the text elements and the application of the theoretical knowledge presented in the theoretical part of the thesis, it is concluded that the singer in the album avoids the stereotypical depiction of African-Americans. Sexuality of an African-American woman is presented from her own perspective; the narrative of the visual album corresponds with the trends of contemporary African-American popular music. At the same time, she uses the potential of nudity to raise awareness about the problems African- Americans face - racial inequality in the US,...
