Active ageing in the times of covid. Experiences of the organizers of free time activities
Mejtská, Petra ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the experiences of employees and volunteers working in centres and clubs for the elderly people that organize leisure activities for their clients. These organisations fulfil the idea of active ageing, which they define as healthy and correct way of ageing. Activity, participation and social contact are important aspects of this concept, which should lead to an improved quality of life in old age, physical and mental health and other benefits. However, during the spring of 2020, all activities of the centres (and other institutions) were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Elderly people were advised to stay home and isolate themselves. This, however, brought additional risks for them. Loneliness in old age is a debated topic that was accentuated during the pandemic. This thesis uses qualitative methods, and my communication partners are volunteers, lecturers and managers of the senior centres and clubs who worked there throughout the pandemic and beyond. Using in-depth qualitative, semi-open-ended interviews, this thesis is interested in how they coped with the sudden closure during the pandemic and what strategies they adopted to protect their clients. The text seeks to approach their decision-making on the edge of two risks - loneliness and the possibility of...
"It should be as important as your basic hygiene": How Students in Singapore Experience and Understand Sexuality Education
Shamsun Nahar, Nur Amalina ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
Sexual health (SH) encompasses more than the mere absence of disease; it includes an individual's overall well-being in matters of sexuality. During formative years, access to comprehensive information and knowledge about sexual health is crucial for developing SE literacy. Therefore, sexuality education (SE) is pivotal in moulding sexual well-being. Globally, two approaches to SE exist comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), which has demonstrated better sexual health outcomes, and abstinence-only until marriage (AOUM). In Singapore, the predominant strategy is AOUM, which emphasizes abstinence as the primary defence against pregnancies and STDs. Some argue that Singapore's heteronormative culture and economic objectives influence the adoption of AOUM. However, amid increased reported sexual misconduct cases among students and teachers, questions arise concerning the effectiveness of SE in place. This study explores the understanding, meaning, and experiences of SE among students in Singaporean schools. Employing a qualitative methodology, eight individuals were interviewed, and thematic analysis guided by Braun and Clarke was utilized to analyze the data. The study identified four prominent themes: unmemorable encounters, emphasis on abstinence, a demand for greater knowledge, and the presence...
Not surrendering your power": Freebirth in the Czech Republic
Jiřičková, Barbora ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Hájek, Martin (referee)
This thesis addresses the issue of unassisted childbirth from the perspective of medical anthropology, or the anthropology of childbirth. Particular attention is paid to the question of why some women choose to give birth this way, taking into account the (Czech) social and legal context in which this choice is made. The work is based on qualitative research, and draws primarily on in-depth interviews with nine women who have had their own experience of at least one birth without professional medical assistance. The main findings of this thesis are primarily based on thematic data analysis and its interpretation, which identified five main thematic categories: own (emic) conceptualization of childbirth; following one's own needs; distrust of doctors and the bio-medical system; authoritative knowledge; and care during childbirth. The overall overarching theme is women's desire to 'not give away (surrender) their power', which corresponds with their effort to establish and maintain agency within the pregnancy and birth process. In addition to the particular factors that influence the decision of the mothers, the thesis also presents structural barriers that may influence their decision, which is mainly the unavailability of community (certified) midwifes, caused to a large extent by the Czech legal...

CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of sociological studies Sociology Abolition of Infant Care Institutions from a Perspective of OSPOD Employees in Prague and the Ústí Region Abstract Author: Bc. Michaela Scheithauerová Study program: Sociology Thesis supervisor: PhDr. Mgr. Jaroslava Hasmanová Marhánková, Ph.D. Thesis Consultant: Mgr. Romana Marková Volejníčková, Ph.D. Year of thesis defense: 2023 Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the issue of the abolition of infant institutions and the attitude of social workers of the Authority for Social and Legal Protection of Children towards it. It is focused on the opinions of workers regarding the practical feasibility of placing vulnerable children under the age of 3 outside of institutional care, in connection with the amendment to Act 359/1999 Coll. on the social-legal protection of children. As part of the interviews with the informants, it was also determined what "good care" means in their opinion and whether infant institutions can fulfill it. This thesis compares the Ústí Region and Prague and maps whether there are different opinions between them regarding the amendment of the law. The theoretical part defines in more detail terms such as a child at risk and its needs, what institutional education is, how it is divided and how it...
"Eating for Two": Pregnant Women's Perceptions of the Body and the Fetus, and Their Eating Habits
Rutová, Simona ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
Pregnancy is currently a highly monitored condition, and also, as a result of the strong discourse of healthy lifestyle, certain demands are placed on a pregnant woman's diet. However, the topic appears also in culturally framed advice and expectations, which often contradict the medical community's directions. With this work, for which my main question is how the perception of the body and fetus affects a woman's diet during pregnancy, I aimed to enrich this discussion with the perspective of pregnant women and their perception of the needs and tastes of their body and fetus. I base this work on authors such as Merleau-Ponty, Young and Bourdieu, and on data from 15 semi-structured interviews supplemented by 5 diaries kept during pregnancy. My research shows that pregnant women perceive their body and the fetus as actors that influence their eating, because through tastes, nausea or movement they perceive the communicated needs of the body and the fetus. The influence of eating and the perception of the body and the fetus, however, turned out to be mutual, because eating also has a significant influence on how women perceived and communicated with her body and fetus and perceived its individuality. With this research I therefore expand the current understanding of pregnant embodiment, medical...
Pro-Ana Phenomenon on Twitter
Temesgenová, Natálie ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Hájek, Martin (referee)
Pro-ana is an abbreviation of pro anorexia, referring to supporting and favouring of anorexia and understanding it rather as a choice, not a disease. On social media platforms this phenomenon is embedded in communities gathering to exchange knowledge and practices and provide social support to each other. This master's thesis aims to explore this phenomenon on Twitter by conducting digital ethnography and scrutinizing the development of the pro-ana discourse and its relation to biomedical discourse. In regards to the findings, the relation between the biomedical and pro-ana discourse is rather one sided and parasitical. This relation provides a foundation to conceptualizing the pro-ana phenomenon as an emancipating self-help people changing institution, allowing for holistic perspective and greater understanding of the discourse rooted in the discourse itself.
The influence of social media on the eating disorder recovery
Drobílková, Eva ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Procházková, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between the eating disorder treatment process and the influence of fitness influencers on social media. Specifically, it uses qualitative methods to research the motivations for membership in an online fitness community of individuals with a history of these disorders, along with the benefits of the content shared there. The thesis is divided into three main parts, of which the first part defines the discussed concepts in the context of the research and presents the current state of knowledge within the topic. Eating disorders are linked to social media and broken down in the context of different treatment options, followed by an introduction to the phenomenon of creating online communities within the field of digital health, which also frames the research. The second, methodological part of the thesis is devoted to the conduct of the digital ethnographic research, the definition of the objectives and research questions, the description of the chosen methods and their ethics. The results of the analysis of data obtained through participant observation of the selected social media content and semi-structured interviews are presented within the third part of the thesis. Here, the research findings are divided into two thematic units based on the...
Wearing Gender: Men's Take on Fashion
Hrušková, Zita ; Hrešanová, Ema (advisor) ; Benešovská, Barbora (referee)
The presented work deals with the male perspective on fashion and dressing. Clothing works with various means of communication, which are used with greater or lesser awareness of the individual. The main aim of this work is to find out how this communication is formed. In other words, it is a study of what goes into men's thinking and decision-making when it comes to clothing and what role their gender expression plays in this process. The work first presents several theoretical concepts that are inevitably connected with this topic. It is further enriched by qualitative research, which presents the mentioned topics in Czech context through 11 interviews with men of two age categories. Subsequent findings are approached through the lens of the grounded theory method. The key decision-making element turned out to be the everyday experience, which is manifested in the events in which men participate on a given day. An important aspect in men's lives are also external influences, which can come from a personal level, mainly represented by their life partners, or from a community level, exemplified by interests and leisure activities. These two main influential sources are covered by the overall social context, which sets general rules about what is appropriate or expected. In the case of the...
Young women's perception of body shaming and their own bodies through their narration
Štefančová, Marie ; Divíšek, Tereza (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
This bachelor's thesis explores the perception of one's own body from the perspective of adolescent and young adult women. It focuses primarily on how women evaluate their own appearance in the context of social norms and expectations, how their view has been influenced by their surroundings over time, and what positive or negative phenomena these influences have brought about. The theoretical part of the thesis defines and explains some of the concepts associated with the issue and reflects on previous academic research on the perception of one's own body in relation to societal expectations. The practical part then consists of an analysis of data collected in narrative interviews with young women, in which it was established how the narrators perceived their own bodies, how their perceptions had evolved over the years or who influenced them.
