Knowledge and Opinions of Students on Genetically Modified Organisms

This diploma thesis is focused on topic of genetically modified organisms and their use in the practical sectors of human life. Theoretical part of the thesis defines general terms GMO, plasmid, genetic engineering, biotechnology. It also records historical milestones relating to the problematic, deals with individual techniques of genetic engineering and briefly states legislative procedures in context of dealing with GMO. It gives examples of transgenic organisms and summarizes advantages and disadvantages of their use.Practical part of the thesis contains educational program called "Genetically modified organisms", which was conceived by the author and includes a draft of a lesson inclusive of teaching materials - powerpoint presentations, worksheets, interactive worksheets, auxiliary text for teacher and written preparation. Research part deals with high school students change of view about using GMOs after completing the educational program. Basics of Molecular Biology at Secondary Schools by Hands-on Activities

The aim of this study is to prepare and verify a molecular biological teaching cycle. This cycle is focused on hands-on activities, critical thinking and student's activity. A total of 99 pupils from two elementary schools (9th grade) and one multi-year grammar school (equivalent to primary schools) participated in the verification. They helped to create an attractive learning cycle from molecular biology, which can be used directly without major modifications and low cost.

Educational Influence of the Centre of Environmental Studies at Kladno

The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes the findings concerning the fulfillment of environmental education in the Czech Republic and comparison with environmental education in the EU. The research part deals with the change of opinion on the environment in the second year of the grammar school in Nové Strašecí after completing the residential educational program. The analysis has shown that environmental-related views have changed in some cases after passing the course (for example, in waste sorting or fertilizer opinion), but most of the views have not changed (for example, in the willingness to give money to the environment or in view of exaggerating environmental problems).

The Botanical Garden Teplice and its Use in Education at High School

The main aim of the thesis was to create functional and practical worksheets that would be used on excursions by secondary school students to the Botanical Garden Teplice. Based on a study of secondary school textbooks, questions were created that repeated subject matter taught at the school, but also expanded it. The questions were incorporated into three types of worksheets dealing with phytogeography, outdoor exhibits and greenhouse exhibits. Guides were created for each type of worksheet to help the person accompanying students, who can be both an employee of the Botanical Garden or a teacher. The test versions of the worksheets were tried out on 131 students from four secondary schools during field trips. The results obtained by completing the worksheets were analysed to identify the shortcomings of questions. This and substantive comments by the supervisor led to an amendment of the questions that required it, resulting in the final version of the worksheets to be used for educational activities at the Botanical Garden Teplice. The Effects of Medicinal Plants on the Human Body

The diploma thesis concentrates on medicinal plants, their use and effects in the treatment of diseases. The thesis summarizes some effects of medicinal substances contained in plants and herbs. They are suitable for use in selected diseases. The research part of diploma thesis deals with the mapping of methods of treatment and production of herbal products among university students. The thesis also examines whether students are inclined to use more herbal therapy over conventional pharmaceutical drugs. It investigated whether information on herbs in schools sufficient. Digital Technologies in Education of Human Biology

Digital technologies have been present in the educational environment in the Czech Republic and other countries for many years. Not only are they becoming a relatively frequent means of making education more attractive, but they also have a great potential for improving methods of illustration in areas difficult to visualize, such as human biology and anatomy. The presented thesis is divided into the theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part summarizes available specialized literature covering the bases for utilizing digital technologies in the practice of teaching; maps out the process of implementing digital technologies into schools in the Czech Republic; and last but not least, describes key elements and methods of teaching with the help of digital technologies. The practical part introduces the results of a survey which took the form of a mixed methods research among elementary and high school pupils, teachers, and students of Teaching Preparation programs. In the final discussion, the amassed data are compared to some of the relevant past surveys conducted by various subjects. In addition, the practical part also includes model activities for using digital technologies in human biology teaching; a description of their pilotage; and a critical reflection on the process. Use of Primate Expositions in Education at Elementary School

This thesis proposes a possibility of using the exposition of primates in the Prague zoo during the school excursion for pupils of the 7th or 8th grade of elementary school. The thesis is divided into individual parts that theoretically analyse the importance of excursions for education and subsequently it is practically focused on facilitating the smooth course of the excursion and other activities that precede the excursion or follow it freely. In the thesis there is the general sorting of primates into individual species described in detail and there is provided basic information about primates that are bred in the Prague zoo. Further, possible excursion trail including individual expositions where the particular animals can be seen is described in detail. The main objective was to provide teachers with detailed instructions on how to make the excursion so it is successful. The purpose of the work was also to create materials which help to actively memorize the information provided and to raise children's interest in such an interesting animal species as the primates.
