Kabbalistic sources in the philosophy of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola
Herůfek, Jan ; Neubauer, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Hladký, Vojtěch (referee) ; Nejeschleba, Tomáš (referee)
This work deals with Mirandola's concept of natural magic and Christian Cabala. I based my study on Pico's prohibited heretic thesis: "There is no science that assures us more of divinity of Christ than magic and Cabala." Pico defended this thesis in the fifth part of Apology. Later Princeps concordiae returned to the same topic, at first in the incomplete work Comentto, then in his late works Expositiones in psalmos and Heptaplus. In the first chapter I incorporate Pico into the historical context. I put emphasis on both Pico's way to philosophical knowledge and his application of philosophical and theological knowledge in the 900 Theses, which was an ambitious but not very successful project. I used the failure of the disputation and the subsequent condemnation of the theses as a starting point for developing the thesis on magic and Cabala in the two following parts. The next chapter focuses on Pico's concept of magic and necromancy. It is necessary to say that Pico never dealt only with magic, but he always related it to astrology or Cabala Defending the status of these sciences in Apology against his opponents, Princeps concordiae followed his division of sciences, introduced earlier in Oratio. Pico related his curriculum scientiarum to the pseudo-Dionysian process. Dialectics and moral philosophy were...
Commento sopra una canzone d'amore in Context of Its Time
Herůfek, Jan ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Petříček, Miroslav (referee) ; Žáčková, Magdalena (referee)
The doctoral thesis Commento sopra una canzone dʼamore in the Context of Its Times, divided into four chapters, focuses on an analysis of the concept of love as perceived by the Italian humanist G. Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494). As Giovanni Pico was an author who lived and worked in the Italian Quattrocento, in the first chapter ("Italian Humanist Giovanni Pico: Portrait Attempt") the attention is focused on the concept of studia humanitatis. His relation to the study of classical languages (Greek and Latin), rhetoric, philosophy and theology is examined in the first part ("Pico between Rhetoric and Philosophy"). Here we deal with the question whether Pico like other Italian humanists adopted the contemporary phenomenon, i. e. the discovery of sources of ancient wisdom (ad fontes). And thus Pico can be grouped with intellectuals of the type of M. Ficino and A. Poliziano, who set themselves the task of creating critical editions of philosophical texts, or, rather, whether Pico used humanist tools (especially rhetoric) to introduce his humanistic philosophical-theological concept. Pico seems to have selected the latter option and he systematically presented his humanistic conception in his works dating from 1486 to 1489 (e.g. Oratio 1486, Conclusiones 1486, Apologia 1487 and Heptaplus 1489). The...
The world of the italian comic-realistic poetry
Žáčková, Magdalena ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Špička, Jiří (referee) ; Herůfek, Jan (referee)
The doctoral thesis The World of Italian Comic-Realistic Poetry maps in a mostly chronological order the type of Italian poetry that is often referred to as 'giocosa' or 'comico- realistica' - in Czech translation, this best corresponds to 'poezie komicko-realistická'. The principal themes and individual topoi within the genre are analysed one by one, and examples are introduced to demonstrate the propositions related to the existence, characteristics and quality of the genre and the comic contained therein. The introduction is followed by an analysis of comic-realistic poetry of the first period which saw its heyday, namely, the first half of the 14th century, roughly comprising the years 1280- 1340. Following an analysis of sonnets by Rustico di Filippi, who is considered the emblematic founder of the genre in Italy, various topics are gradually analysed such as Bakhtinian reversal in values and seeming protest against the world, poverty and money, woman and anti-stilnovismo in sonnets of a great number of poets of the time, the most typical of them being Cecco Angiolieri. Topics with a more realistic background are also included, religious and political sonnets in particular. The issue of autobiography or pseudo- autobiography in comic-realistic texts is also covered in detail. Based on the...
