Escape games in German language teaching

The diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of escape rooms and their use in education. Firstly, a theoretical basis was created in which the individual components of escape rooms were elaborated in detail. Understanding all the components, their functions and the whole concept provided the opportunity to explain the applicability of escape rooms in education, specifically to outline the possibilities and limits of escape rooms. These have been described from both a technical and a pedagogical perspective. Escape rooms have been put in the context of pedagogical theory, where they have found support both in the curriculum and in other pedagogical principles. The roles of both teacher and students in this regard were characterized. The use of Escape Rooms in education was concretised in terms of foreign language teaching, explaining the possibilities offered by escape games in German language teaching. In the practical part of the thesis, an original escape game for German language teaching, Treasure in Vienna, was created. As the name indicates, the escape game is set in Vienna, so the pupils work with cultural background, foreign language and at the same time develop key competences.
