The Prestige of Teachers Occupation

Thesis deals with the prestige of the teaching profession. Its main goal is to try to find out how teachers themselves perceive the prestige connected with their profession. The research consisted of in-depth semi-structured interviews with teachers on this issue and their subsequent analysis. It turned out that although teachers occupy on occupational prestige scales regularly top positions within the interviews they spoke about very low prestige connected with their occupation. The thesis also presents and describes in detail the factors based on analysis of interviews which emerged in connection with low self-esteem of teachers in terms of prestige as a major. This mainly concerns the relatively low income and the related lower standard of living, which forces teachers to have a secondary income. Furthermore, the analysis showed that teachers low self-esteem is affected by alleged lower difficulty of faculties of education, difficult assesment of work results and underastimated difficulty of work from the publics point of view. Not forgetting the little influence of educational unions and the lack of professional organizations that defend the interests of teachers. Recommendations as everyday practice of each of us

This thesis deals with recommendation as the omnipresent phenomenon, especially its mechanism of functioning. Recommendation is a common part of communication of each of us. It contains a conversation on any topic with friends or acquaintances that have certain experience with given topic and on the ground of this experience they intentionally provide negative or positive reference for the product, service or event discussed. It is not rare that the essence of recommendation is used for marketing and commercial purposes as for example various advertisements, websites or specific mobile applications. Recommendation is a specific form of social communication and we can look at it from more points of view. It is usual to divide communication situation using traditional models to participants, content, form, intentions and effects. These general findings are in this thesis connected with particular parts of life as entertainment, services, basic things and products of daily consumption, extra products and social relationships. As emerged from the analysis of the interviews, key concept of recommendation mechanism is trust. It plays an important role in all parts of recommendation structure. Finally, the results from the analysis are compared with findings from expert literature and previous researches.
The effects of the early home reading socialization on children's academic achievement

The subject of the dissertation thesis is research of the early reading literacy at first stage of the primary school. We examine how is reading literacy influenced by the family socio-cultural backgrounds (education, two different forms of cultural capital). First, we outline the current knowledge in the field of language and cognitive development of children in the context of family background and the concept of cultural capital in the form of home literacy environment. Second, we present the findings of a 6-year longitudinal study with 439 children and their parents from Prague and Central Bohemian region. We investigate (a) an existing difference in pre-literacy among primary schoolers based on the socio-cultural climate of the family and (b) this level of pre-literacy at the beginning of school in the (transition to multi-year grammar schools from the sixth grade. Children enter school with different levels of pre-literacy, but the lead of those who show a higher level of initial literacy will not be lost even after two years of schooling (we reject the Matthew effect hypothesis). Intergenerational Transmission of Parenting Styles from Family of Orientation to Family of Procreation in the Small Town

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the transmission of parenting styles in families. It is designed as a case study concerning two generations of families from a small town named Říční that is located in the Central Bohemian Region. The aim of this thesis was to describe what influence does a parenting style person was raised in have on the individual's approach towards raising his/her own children. Theoretical part is divided in three chapters that discuss topics of family, upbringing and intergenerational transmission. Each of these sections is dedicated to defining concepts that are further used in the thesis as well as summarizing existing relevant findings. At first, the practical part presents to a reader what kind of methodology was used. Then it is devoted to interpretation of gathered data and answering established research questions. The foundations for this was my qualitative research during which I carried out semi-structured interviews with current parents and grandparents. Books potential as resource of cognitive cultural capital: effects on educational attainment and socioeconomic status

The thesis The potential of books as a source of cognitive cultural capital: the impact on educational attainment and socioeconomic status deals with the socio-cultural phenomenon of reading that is understand as a cognitive skill whether is closely linked to the child's basic needs and habits of operating and learning. The aim of this study is to explore the mechanism of cultural activities (such as a specific type of cultural capital) that is shaped by family and school and forms the individual abilities of human beings. From this perspective it is determinate prerequisite for success in life. The theoretical part describes the life stages of reading with a clearly defined reading's habits and built up the relationship between child and book. Afterwards this part of thesis outlines the concept of cognitive cultural capital and summarizes the importance of external determinants for emergence and development of interest in reading. Islamic civilization: A comparison of representative interpretations

Diploma thesis "Islamic civilization: A comparison of representative interpretations" presents theoretical and historical approach to comparative study of Islamic society by interpretation and comparison of principal scholars in which the author lays emphasis on basic social patterns of this society in long-term and dynamic development as well as on its role within modernization transformations. The main goal is to contribute by selective reflexion to understanding of the long-term historical experiences, its peculiar world views and institutional patterns as well as the ways it participates in history of the world. For this purpose the author employs interpretations and comparisons of the selected authors with particular focus on conception of Muslim society in the writings of Ernest Gellner. The first part is engaged in definition of Islamic civilization concept as one of the largest socio-cultural complexes in Eurasian macro-region. The second part focuses on political traditions and transformations as well as to some extent on economic structure of Islamic civilization. The last part pursues Islamic society as prospective alternative modernity in comparison to diverse conceptions of Islam interpretations proposed by other social science scholars.

Kristýna Strnadová Thesis name: Language tamers: methods of overcoming language barrier by immigrant students at Czech schools Abstract The thesis 'Language tamers: methods of overcoming language barrier by immigrant students at Czech schools' deals with a phenomenon of overcoming language barrier through acquisition of the host language for immigrants who move to a new country. The aim of this work is to monitor the progress of overcoming language barrier from the perspective of immigrant students with regard to various factors that affect the process (cultural and social capital, language, age etc.). The theoretical part describes the fundamental importance of the host language as a means of communication in the context of immigrant integration to the new society, outlines the specifics of the intercultural communication between people of different nationalities, summarizes the factors which influence the acquisition of the host language, and acquaint with the situation in Czech schools in conjunction with the language barrier. Aspiration of children from children's homes

Bachelor thesis "Aspiration of Children from Children's Homes" discusses family plans and dreams of children from children's homes, who don't live in family enviroment, which is one of the main socialization agencies and also origin of ideas of future life. Main purpuse of this thesis is to ilustrate differences between children from childrens homes and children from families. Survey of children in children's home above 15 years old was made for this thesis (N=127). Survey focuses on four main areas of family life: relationships, marriage, parenthood and distribution of roles in family. Other three datasets from surveys of future plans of childrens from families were analyzed. Frequency and correlations analysis were used and results of these two groups were compared together. It was revealed that plans of children from children's homes and children from families varies. Results show that children from children's homes are less inclined to future family life. There was also no evidence of linkage between age at which children were institutionalized and their future family plans.
