Bell Beakers on Iberian Peninsula and in Czech republic. Analysis of similarities and differences in the manifestations of this culture.
Brathová, Gabriela ; Dobeš, Miroslav (advisor) ; Limburský, Petr (referee)
This thesis deals with Bell Beaker Culture at the end of the Eneolithic in two areas of its extension, in the Czech Republic and the Iberian Peninsula. We consider it as a one culture; however we can observe some differences mostly based on different domestic cultural background. Differences and similarities in manifestation of culture derived from an analysis of its various aspects in both areas such as settlement structure, funeral rite and material culture, of which the most characteristic are decorated Bell Beakers and archery equipment coming from the graves. This work is devoted to the characterization of Bell Beaker society and evolution of opinions on this phenomenon too.
Prehistoric settlement of Levý Hradec (Central Bohemia)
Vávrová, Barbora ; Bláhová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Dobeš, Miroslav (referee)
The thesis presents the results of processing the excavation of the acropolis of Levý Hradec (district of Praha-západ). The excavation took place between 1940-1954 under the leadership of Ivan Borkovský (ARÚ ČSAV in Prague). The hillfort is known as the Early Medieval center, however it was notably settled during the prehistory as well. Unfortunately, these findings have not been processed yet. The main aim of this thesis was the identification of prehistoric cultures on the basis of pottery collection, assignment of the extent of settlement in particular cultures and effort to date the prehistoric phases of fortification on the basis of original documentation and the pottery findings. Moreover, there was the attempt to identificate the excavated objects in documentation and cross connect the pottery with documentation.
Human remains on the settlement sites of the Czech neolithic period
Kovaľ, Juraj ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Dobeš, Miroslav (referee)
This study is thematically linked to the analysis of findings of the Czech Eneolithic period. The essence of this work lies in the comprehensive processing of all types of findings of human remains in the Czech Neolithic dwellings including the yet unpublished, but highly significant findings of Prague-Liboc and Prague-Ruzyně. Comparing the variety of the human remains handling in the environment of Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures, burials within settlements, usually present simultaneously with regular burials in dedicated grounds and often considered abnormal, appear to be an important occurance in the period. We obtained a picture illustrating the uniqueness of the Linear Pottery culture and the Stroked Pottery culture concernig the treatment of human remains in settlements.
Issue of stone fortifications on Iberian Peninsula from 4th to 2nd millennium BC
Brathová, Gabriela ; Dobeš, Miroslav (advisor) ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee)
Walled enclosures on the Iberian Peninsula can be classified into fortification activities that took place in the Copper Age respectively Eneolithic across Europe, and from a variety of reasons. Even in the Iberian Peninsula this kind of fortification is not unique. At the same time in the area of Iberian Meseta extend ditched enclosures (Díaz-del-Río 2004). Walled enclosures that stand in the centre of the attention of this work are situated mainly in four regions: southeast and southwest of the Peninsula, Portuguese Estremadura and north Meseta and its western periphery. Walled enclosures lie in most cases on so-called spurs or hilltops. Their position is associated with flows of large rivers such as the Guadalquivir, Guadiana, Tagus, Duoro and Mondego and with their tributaries, or they are connected directly with the sea through estuaries. In the case of dry southeast area the enclosures are associated with smaller local rivers as Andarax (Los Millares). There exist many theories in conjunction with the proximity of deposits of copper ore and its processing, for example the "colonial" theory or the theory of factories. In the context of these models stand in the centre of the attention the role of indigenous inhabitants. Key words Iberian Peninsula - Eneolithic - Walled enclosures - Metallurgy

PhDr. Luboš Jiráň, CSc. 2012 Abstract Miroslav Dobeš: Copper in Eneolithic Bohemia. Copper artifacts are an important source of understanding for European prehistory, not only in terms of the development of new technologies, but also importantly as a means of social communication. The gradual perception of the copper objects from their initial importing to simple cold forging to pyrotechnological processes and culminating in the Early Bronze Age tin bronze alloys, can be observed already in the Near East at the end of the 9th Millenium B.C., in other words the Aceramic Neolithic (Çayönü Tepesi). Within Europe, there has been a rapid initial development of metalurgy in the Balkans, aproximatelly in the middle of the 5th Millenium B.C., in Central Europe this innovation has arrived sometime around 4000 B.C., or shortly afterwards. The present work is the first thorough analysis of the Czech Eneolithic copper industry, which is based largely on original documentation of findings and attempts to complete the synthesis of sources. From a chronological point of view, this work covers the entire period of the...

The Eneolithic site Líbeznice, distr. of Prague - East
Sosnová, Anežka ; Dobeš, Miroslav (advisor) ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee)
The polycultural settlement area in Libeznice (Prague-East district) represents a relatively large complex of many different settlement structures, mostly of Funnel Beaker culture and Hallstat period, as well as three Unetice culture tombs and a skeleton burial probably of La-Téne period. An archaeological excavation, which was caused by the construction of a ring road, took place in the years 2008 and 2009. During the works several dozens of settlement structures of Funnel Beaker culture were uncovered - a large open settlement with more than ten long houses. In this thesis a chosen group of sixteen settlement structures is dealt with and published and its ceramic artefacts are analysed in detail. On the basis of its morphological features was this settlement dated to the younger period of Funnel Beaker culture, i.e. to the salzmünde phase. This study is extended with several introductory chapters summarizing the up-to-date scholarship on Czech Early and the beginning of the Middle Eneolithic periods to enable the better global understanding and the clearer wider context of the artefacts and structures of this settlement. Middle Eneolithic period - Funnel Beaker culture - Salzmünde phase - habitation area - Bohemia
