Possibilities of chemical decontamination procedures for degradation of toxic organic compounds in groundwater

This diploma work represents a part of the project "Reactive Chemical Barrier for Decontamination of Highly Polluted Groundwaters" (RECHEBA) that is focused on the complex research and practical realization of in-situ reactive barriers. Search and choise of suitable localities as well as applying of the novel photochemical method, developed originally for disinfection and cleaning of bath water, to toxic underground waters for the environmental remediation. Based on hydrogeological conditions and chemical contaminations, four suitable localities have been proposed for application of the permeable reactive barriers. As the most appropriate place, an industrial area in the North Moravia near Ostrava was chosen located on terraces of the river Odra. From the hydrogeological point of view, it represents a highly permeable collector. This area in mainly contaminated by aromatic hydrocarbons and other organic compounds as well as inorganic waste substances, mostly sulfate and ammonium ions. Applicability of the novel photochemical method for remediation of contaminated groundwaters was tested. Limits for the use of thermal waters on the example of the conceptual model of the Benesov-Usti aquifer system of the Bohemian Cretaceous basin PhD thesis Résumé Josef V. DATEL, MSc. The very work was carried out in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, which forms the largest basin structure of Upper Cretaceous age in the territory of the Czech Republic and takes up a major part of northern and eastern Bohemia. A crucial impulse for the research was new exploratory work in approximately the last 10 years, whose intention was to intensify thermal water sources exploration. Several new boreholes and wells were drilled and these have brought to light information about the hydrogeological structure exploited. The groundwater system of the Benesov and Usti nad Labem area, taking up around 2000 square kilometers, is more or less a closed hydrogeological unit with a relatively easily definable boundary. Its groundwater occurs mainly in Cretaceous aquifers. Aktuální potřeba restrukturalizace zdrojů pitné vody v České republice

Hlavním cílem vodohospodářské studie je přispět k racionálnímu a trvale udržitelnému hospodaření se zdroji pitné vody České republiky tak, aby i výhledově byla zajištěna soběstačnost v zásobování obyvatelstva pitnou vodou. Autoři se zaměřili na identifikaci hlavních problémů vyplývajících ze stávající struktury zdrojů pro zásobování obyvatelstva pitnou vodou se zvláštním zřetelem na očekávané změny klimatu. Racionální a ekologicky podmíněná koncepce rozvoje zdrojů pro zásobování obyvatelstva pitnou a užitkovou vodou by se ve finální podobě měla promítnout do vodohospodářských plánů povodí, regionálních plánů rozvoje vodovodů a kanalizací a do souboru adaptačních opatření v krajině zaměřených na zlepšení odtokových a infiltračních poměrů a zvýšení retence vody ve vazbě na očekávané klimatické změny. Východiskem pro zpracování vodohospodářské studie byly veřejně dostupné podklady a citovaná literatura.
