Most: the city wrested out of roots
Jechová, Jitka ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
This paper focuses on a compact monograph of the city of Most. It concentrates on the basic questions related to a city as a complex cultural phenomenon: What are the impacts on urban settlement when it is relocated from the original landscape and the historical centre is destroyed; if the completely modern building area is able to fulfill the functions of the original city; what is the degree of identification of the inhabitants with the city and what is the overall loss of continuity of the city's development. Apart from available literature and archival sources, the paper employs also own empirical research, carried out using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

The relationship between modern information and digital technologies and contemporary architecture and urbanism
Cimbál, Václav ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Lapka, Miloslav (referee) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
My thesis deals with the relationship between modern information and digital technologies and contemporary architecture and urbanism. I do not study any direct impact of these technologies on the architectonic and urbanistic production as working or manufacturing means. I try to show social changes caused by technologies and their reflection in the environment created by people. However, I try to consider the relationship as interactive, which means that I do not perceive the urban country only as a fossil of cultural forms, but also as the power that contributes to forming. In order to depict the relationship, I found the use of the concept of the culture as a network of symbolic meanings to be the most suitable. The thesis is divided into three main parts. In the first part, I introduce the development of the conception of culture and explain my own understanding of this phenomenon based on the symbolic interpretation of the culture. The second part of the thesis deals with the contemporary society. I explain the contemporary culture on the basis of the relationship between the sign and the symbol. On the basis of their dichotomy, I explain the terms of postmodernism, globalisation, glocalisation. The possibility of cohesion of modern societies in disintegration of unifying symbolic contents is...
Vitis vinifera
Ptáčková, Jana ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
In my thesis I have mapped the available sources documenting the first attempts at grape growing and the discovery of the intoxicating effects of wine. I have summarized the records of various ways of wine production, its preservation and the habits related to its consumption. I have dedicated special attention to the presence of the grapevine as well as to wine consumption in our territory. In the individual chapters I have considered wine as a religious symbol and dealt with the impact of wine consumption on health. Special attention was paid to wine as a source of inspiration for artists with an accent on visual arts and cinematography. The thesis is concluded by a chapter dedicated to wine as a social life forming factor.
Symbol and architecture
Richter, Jan ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Matějů, Martin (referee)
The thesis attempts to define and capture the relation of symbol and architecture, which is taken into account in two main thematic areas. The first area deals with the issue of symbol, which is presented on the basis of classification of symbols in two types - progressively restitutive and regressively reductive - as it was proposed by professor Borecký in the Czech culturology studies. In line with the culturological interdisciplinarity, understanding symbol is showed from different points of view adopted by various humanities such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology or religious studies. The examples of concepts of symbol are taken from prominent scholars of these domains, focused especially on S. Freud, C. G. Jung, E. Cassirer, P. Ricoeur, C. Geerz or M. Eliade. The second part of the thesis is concerned in symbolic conception of the world and its architectonic representation. Understanding phenomena of reality reflects in founding places and their development into significant space for human existence by architectonic representations of symbolic meanings. The architecture is presented here as amalgamation of architectural craft with symbolic contents. Especially the ideas of phenomenologically oriented authors, such as Ch. Norberg-Schulz, D. Veselý and others, are taken into...
Hair as a mirror. Social and cultural dimensions of hair symbolism
Kernová, Michaela ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
We focus on hair as a symbol of personality, cultural and social influence and the object of ritual ceremonies.1 Hair is not only a vitally important part of human body but it is an important cultural phenomenon and serves as important cultural artifact, because it is simultaneously public (visible to everyone), personal (biologically linked to the body), and highly malleable to suit cultural and personal preferences. Hair - whether present or absent, restored or removed, abundant or scarce, long or short, bound or unbound, dyed or natural - marks a person as clearly as a speech, clothing, and smell. Hair tells a lot about every man, about his age, social and family status, his sexual availability and desirability, about his interests, his character, his political stance and religious preferences, his roots, background, his membership in some subculture and about the fashion and the norms of the period (and his conformability or inadaptability). It is a perfect culture- anthropological topic becauce every culture has particular rules and norms how to dispose of hair. Social and cultural influence on hairstyling could be asserted by means of fashion (mild form) or more serious forms of restrict orders (even written as the laws and directions) or just by cultural norms which set the looks of "normal,...

The bra in a culturological perspective
Reichelová, Kateřina ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hubáček, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis is a presentation of the bra in a culturological perspective. It gives an overview of the historical, technological and current socio-cultural context of the garment and suggests an empirical study that would help to answer the question why women wear bras. The bra is a cultural element that is perceived by most people living in current western society as an integral part of everyday life. For many women it is an essential component of their wardrobe. However, it plays more roles than that of a practical "gadget". The brassiere is, in its own way, a social phenomenon; a multidimensional entity that can be viewed from many different angles and in different contexts. The thesis compiles basic information on the origins, evolution and functions of the bra. The first part presents the most important milestones in the history and development of clothing of the shaping of the female bust before invention of the bra. The second part of the paper presents the evolution of the bra as an element of the material part of current western culture. Section three considers the changes in attitude toward the brassiere and its symbolism during the 100 or so years of its existence; namely in the framework of the women's emancipation movement and the feminist/gender discourse. It focuses on three periods: the end...
