Comparison of both periodic and steady state hydrogenation of pyrolysis gasoline dissolved in toluene in pilot scale trickle bed reactor is reported. Enhancement of reaction rate under periodic operation mode is followed by higher mean catalyst bed temperature and broader pressure drop fluctuation with respect to steady state ones.

The results of the research of hydrogenation reaction running in Trickle bed reactor (TBR) under condition of steady state or periodic pulse modulation of liquid feed are presented in the report. The effect od pulse period and split on reaction conversion including optimal operation conditions was determined. Yhe extensive hydrodynamic study of TBR was conducted and judged in terms of pressure drop profiles along the catalytic layer, liquid hold up and residence time distribution. Results of hydrodynamic study confirm determination of optimal operating conditions related to maximum conversion.

Experimental series were focused on catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated components in pyrolysis gasoline: styrene, consecutive hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) via dihydrodicyclopentadiene (DHDCPD) to tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (THDCPD), indene, allylbenzene, 4-methylstyrene, 3-methylstyrene and 4-methylstyrene. Hydrogenation was investigated at temperature 30, 40 a 60°C and under hydrogen pressure 2 a 5 bar using Noblyst Degussa 1505 (0,1 hm. % Pd/ ? - Al2O3) catalyst.

Effects of following feed rate modulation parameters on styrene and dicyclopentadiene hydrogenation in toluene and pyrolysis gasoline were investigated in pilot plant experiments: period length, its split, liquid feed rate and liquid rich to liquid poor period parts ratio. The catalyst deactivation was investigated too. Pilot plant results indicated 10% higher trickle bed reactor throughput by application of periodic feed rate modulation in comparison to steady state operation regime.

Paper proposes hierarchic structure of mathematical models of pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation in trickle bed reactor using egg-shell type catalyst. Model dimensions cover an interval from 3 mm of catalyst pellet diameter over a string of several catalyst pellets trickled by reaction mixture to finaly pilot plant trickle bed reactor of diameter 100 mm. Hydrodynamics, transport phenomena and chemical reaction kinetics were desribed by differential balances which were solved by a finite difference method using COMSOL Multiphysics software.

This report sumarizes project results obtained from December 10th 2006 to July 31st 2007. Working team effort was concentraced on residence time distribution measurement by refractometric method in laboratory trickle bed reactor with organic liquid. Method was tested giving reproducible results.

Stavárek, Petr ; Jiřičný, Vladimír ; Staněk, Vladimír ; Hanika, Jiří ; Tukač, V. ; Chyba, V. ; Lederer, J. ; Kolena, J. ; Kubička, D.
Paper deals with behaviour investigation of trickle bed reactor with periodically modulated feed rate of liquid reaction mixture. Dicyclopentadiene hydrogenation using palladium supported catalyst was used as a model reaction. Feed rate modulation parameters – period length and its split – have effect on pressure and temperature waves travelling down along catalyst bed.

The effect of feed rate modulation on efficiency of pilot plant trickle bed reactor during pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation using palladium supported catalyst was investigated. Enhancement factors for unsaturated hydrocarbon components were evaluated from experiments made both in steady state and dynamic operation modes. Feed rate modulation mode prefered hydrogenation of minority components of the feed.

Sazanov, S. ; Tukač, V. ; Chyba, V. ; Handlová, M. ; Hanika, Jiří ; Lederer, J. ; Kolena, J.
Internal efficiency factors of palladium on alumina catalyst have been evaluated for hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons – styrene and dicyclopentadienene - representing key components of pyrolysis gasoline. Effect of catalyst particle diameter and temperature on reaction rate has been investigated in the study.
