The Concept of Jewishness in Howard Jacobson's The Finkler Question

This thesis focuses on the contemporary Anglo-Jewish Literature and its recent revival. Its main aim is to explain the concept of Jewishness as it is described by Howard Jacobson in his novel The Finkler Question. It consists of two parts, theoretical and practical. The first part provides background information on the history of the Jewish minority in Britain and its current position within the British society, it also describes the two basic Jewish literary types which occurs in the works of non-Jewish authors and compares Jewish literatures in Britain and America. The second part analyses the text itself. It focuses on the perspective which the author uses to show his view on the question of Jewish identity, compares the point of view of the Jewish and the non-Jewish characters. It also describes how Jacobson works with stereotypes, what role Judaism plays in the novel and what anti-Semitic issues are mentioned in the book.
Memory and Uncertainty in Michael Frayn's Copenhagen

The thesis is an attempt to explore various ways in which Michael Frayn employs the philosophical implications of Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Niels Bohr's complementarity principle in his play Copenhagen and to find out how he works with the theme of memory in the text. The theoretical part puts the play into the frame of the science theatre genre and offers a brief overview of depiction of memory in literature. The practical part then analyses the theme of memory in connection with quantum physics in the text and covers the development of our perception of the characters. Postmodern Themes and Strategies in The French Lieutenant's Woman

The thesis focuses on postmodern themes and strategies employed in The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. The aim of this work is to discuss the postmodern themes and strategies, analyse these elements in the novel, and show what constitutes The French Lieutenant's Woman as a work of historiographic metafiction. The thesis also aims to show the main differences between the traditional nineteenth-century realist fiction and the innovative postmodern genre of historiographic metafiction.
Conception of Science in the Selected Works by Simon Mawer

The aim of this thesis is to explore Simon Mawer's approach to science and to compare the roles of science in his novels Mendel's Dwarf and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky. The description of author's life and its influence on his work with emphasis on the scientific aspects is provided and his opinion on the relationship between science and literature given. The difference between fiction with aspects of science and science fiction is explained and other authors who deal with science in their fiction are exemplified. As Mendel's Dwarf employs genetics and eugenics and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky nuclear physics, the brief development of these scientific fields is described.
Concept of time travelling in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lost Road and C. S. Lewisʹ Space Trilogy

The thesis focuses on the understanding of different approaches to time and space travelling as explored in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lost Road and C. S. Lewisʹ Space Trilogy. The work should introduce the authors' writing skills and imagination by not only comparing the theme of their books and used narrative techniques, but also concerning the life stories of both of them and their inevitable influence on each other. Discussed is also the character of Doctor Elwin Ransom and his resemblance to Tolkien.
