Czech Language in the World of Teenagers

The primary aim of this diploma thesis is to research language variability of school pupils at the age of 13 and 15, its changes occurring in last decades and the analysis of causes and links leading to these changes. The thesis also deals with social conditionality of contemporary Czech language and relationship between language variability and social stratification. After a theoretical part introducing the method of discourse analysis and Czech language varieties surrounding today's school children, school essays written in the fifties of 20th century and now are compared. In the following part the analysis results of the semi-structured interviews with 15 year old people are brought in. The interviews are focused on teenagers' attitude to contemporary language variability and their considering which social environment and contexts require using of high-level standard language. Finally the questions are raised if the value of language is perceived by teenagers and what social functions of language are indicated by them.
