The crisis, mergers, changes in ownership and cosolidation - the economical development of czech media companies in years 2009-2013 and cosequent change of the ownership
Beránek, Jan ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Benda, Josef (referee)
This thesis is dedicated to the significant change in media ownership in the Czech Republic which occured during the Global crisis in 2008 - 2013. In this period almost all foreign owners sold their media to the local enterpreneurs, who took over almost all media houses. This shift happened under generally less comfortable matket conditions, which have hit mostly the printed media. The local enterpreneurs are naturally much more interested in local politics. This text describes these changes and uncovers the economic reasons that led to it, including the extensive research into publicly available, yet not analysed annual reports of media companies. The conclusion is that the foreign owners generally earned well in the Czech market and that they have decided to use the crisis as a good moment to sell. The arrival of new domestic owners caused worries about their possible interference with kontent and by 2017 there are some hints suggesting that they may use the media against the opponents. But there is a fact that may prevent them: the thesis proves how worth the position on the market is. And this should at least limit these efforts.

Vojtová, Magdaléna ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Benda, Josef (referee)
The primary goal of this master thesis was to analyze the development of ownership of daily newspapers in the Czech Republic in the period 2008 - 2016. The development of media ownership in the monitored period was analyzed in the context of the long term structural problems of media sector, which were intensified by the economic crisis beginning in 2008. In addition to the economic context, the thesis also deals with the historical context, specifically the changes of the Czech daily newspapers market after 1989. In connection with the transfer of ownership of the Czech publishing houses to the hands of domestic businessmen, often with direct links to politics, thesis also deals with the issue of ownership concentration and the relations between media and politics. I also mention the phenomenon of emerging new, alternative media projects by the journalists in reaction to ownership changes threatening pluralism and freedom of speech. In the end, I also compare the development of ownership of the daily newspapers in the Czech Republic with the development of ownership in other countries of the CEE region, such as Slovakia, Poland, Hungary or the Baltic States.

In today's world of new media and big data, our personal data is a valuable commodity. This Master's thesis presents a little-known industry of personal data brokers. Databases of US data brokers contain surprisingly detailed and sensitive information of millions of Americans. The thesis also contains an analysis of risks related to insufficient protection of personal information in digital economy along with possibilities how to enhance our digital privacy in connection with data brokers. The core of the thesis is a comparative analysis of data broker legislation in the US, Canada and the European Union. The analysis shows that in the US there is no unified regulation of personal data protection from activities of data brokers but several laws partially regulating some aspects of personal data protection; this system allows trade in personal data even without the acknowledgement of the persons. On the other hand, regulation in the EU and Canada favours protection of personal data and privacy. In the EU each member state has its legal act on personal data protection based on the EU directive. In April 2018 this directive will be replaced by General Data Protection Regulation which will be directly applicable in all member states. Both current and future legislation, however, make the data broker...
