The literature of Francophone Caribbean writers in Czech translations

The present thesis focuses on French Caribbean fiction writers (from Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana) in Czech translations. The principal subject of the thesis are the specific challenges that translators have to face when translating these authors into Czech. The description of these challenges is preceded by a general presentation of this type of literature. Chapter 1 traces the development of French Caribbean literature (the concepts of francité, négritude, antillanité, créolité and littérature-monde) and defines its characteristic features (especially communication settings and language choices) from the point of view of postcolonial theories. Chapter 2 adds more features by using the comparison of literary translation and postcolonial writing, revealing that they share certain principles and methods. Specific questions and challenges related to the translation of Caribbean literature are also treated in this chapter. Chapter 3 addresses the issue of French Caribbean fiction in the Czech Republic. It lists sources of information, published translations and reactions to these translations in Czech press and analyses the Czech literary market. French-Canadian and Quebec Francophone Literature in Czech Translations

The aim of the thesis is to map Czech translations of French-Canadian and Quebec literature from the first translation (Louis Hémon: Maria Chapdelaine - Czech translation from 1923) to the present day. The theoretical part first defines the terminology related to Francophone Canadian literature and presents the development of this literature and its main themes and movements. Next, the Czech receiving environment is characterized, with particular emphasis on the role of translation in Czech literature and the political and economic constraints that have affected the literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. At the core of the work are Czech translations from French-Canadian and Quebec literature. The periods in which Czech translations were published are identified, and an assessment is made of which authors were introduced to the Czech milieu and how. The thesis also examines the reasons for and circumstances of Czech editions of francophone Canadian works. Attention is also given to literary scholarship on Francophone Canadian literature in Czech. Critical and readerly reception of works of Francophone Canadian literature in the Czech Republic also has its place in the work. The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the translation of chosen chapters of the book Le Parfum by the French author Jean-Claude Ellena, famous creator of parfumes. The translated parts deal with the process of creating a parfum and working with aroma substances. The second part comprises the translation commentary which consists of the translation analysis of the source text by translatologist Christiane Nord, the method of translation, the list of translation problems and their solutions. The aim of the thesis is to elaborate the functionally equivalent and to focus on the translation commentary.

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to translate a selected part of the third chapter of the vegetarian's handbook Viens manger ! Le végétarisme en toute simplicité from French to Czech. This publication was written in 2019 by Marie Marquis et al. at the University of Montreal. The thesis also includes a commentary on the overall translation process and everything that a translator must pay attention to during their work. Therefore, in addition to the translation itself, the thesis also includes the analysis of the source text, the translation method and fictional assignment, selected translation problems and their solution through translation techniques and shifts.

This bachelor thesis Annotated translation: Échappez-vous du labyrinthe de la procrastination (Ferret-Rincon, Laura: Échappez-vous du labyrinthe de la procrastination, Kiwi, Paris, 2021, p. 51-85) is divided into two parts. In the first part comes the translation of the original text from French to Czech and in the second part its commentary. In the first part you can find the translation of twenty standard pages of the book from a French writer Laura Ferret-Rincon which was published by a Parisian publishing house Kiwi in 2021. The second part is composed of the commentary to the translation which is divided into four parts. The first part represents the analysis of the original text, the second one the summary of the translation issues faced, the third one is composed of the description of the translation methods used and at the end you can find the typology of the differences between the original and the translation. The work Commented translation: Lace wars. Uniforms and equipment of the Household of the French King and infantry soldiers under Louis XV. and Louis XVI., and of the British and Prussian infantry in the years of 1700-1800 consists of two parts: A Czech translation of the first part of the above mentioned publication, and a commentary on this translation. The commentary concentrated on the differences between the two languages (French and Czech) and on the translating strategies ensuing from these. It describes the structure of the text (the book as well as the chosen part) and gives information on the authors and the editor. As to translation, special attention has been paid to grammatical, lexicological, terminological, stylistic and factual aspects of the translated text, cohesion and coherence as well as mistakes and unclarities. The motives for choosing the text are listed, together with reasons of the importance of its translation. A brief conclusion and bibliografy follow.

The Bachelor thesis consists of two main parts - the first one is a translation of two chapters from a French publication called L'épopée du jazz. Du blues au bop, the second one presents a commentary of the translation. The source text ranks among popular science books dealing with the history of jazz music. The translation comprises the first and the fifth chapter of the source text describing the origins of jazz music and the style called bop. In the commentary, the source text is analysed from the textual and contextual point of view, and diverse problems of translation and their solutions are examined.
