The Monster in British Gothic Fiction

The Gothic fiction of the 19th century features a number of characters with monstrous qualities as the genre focuses on the darker side of our reality. It populates its pages with supernatural, monstrous beings that bring terror and anxiety to their victims. These characters and their counterparts thus shed light onto the fears, anxieties and paradoxes of 19th century Britain. As they hunt, terrorise, unsettle and cross boundaries they reveal to us the tenets of human nature. Examination of seminal Gothic characters such as the vampire in Dracula, Carmilla and Christabel, the Creature and his creator in Frankenstein and the sinister doubles of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde thus helps us understand the mind-set of that era.

The Interaction of Metaphor and Metonymy in the English Names of Mushroom

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the occurrence of metaphor, metonymy and their interaction in the English names of mushrooms. The theoretical part focuses on both processes and it emphasises cognitive linguistics approach i.e. conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy and blending theory. The practical part aims to classify and quantify source domains and bases of semantic motivation i.e. the salient features that served as the inspiration for the name. The second section of the practical part examines the different patterns of metaphor and metonymy interaction. Each pattern is described in detail on various case studies.

Environmental policy of China and sustainable development

The presented diploma thesis deals with environmental issues in China and focuses on the analysis of environmental policy in China and its approach to sustainable development. There is also addressed international environmental cooperation and China's role within. The aim of this thesis is to present the current condition of the environment in China and its causes, to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental policy in China using the concept of environmental governance and eventually introduce the attitude of China to international environmental cooperation.

This work aims to characterize and analyze the activities of the British Chamber of Commerce in the czech market and its impact on member companies. The main attention is paid to cooperation between the British Chamber of Commerce and its members. The first chapter deals with the mutual relations between the Czech Republic and Great Britain. The second chapter is focused on the British Chamber of Commerce and its characteristics. The third chapter describes the operations and activities the British Chamber of Commerce deals with. The fourth chapter presents partner organizations with which the British Chamber of Commerce cooperates. The last chapter presents results of a survey concerning the relationship of member companies with the British Chamber of Commerce, their views and experience connected with the membership in the British Chamber of Commerce.

Využití vícerozměrných statistických metod při hodnocení bonity podniků

Hlavním cílem mé práce je pomocí diskriminační analýzy z dat scoringového produktu ratingové agentury Moody´s zkonstruovat klasifikační model, který na základě klíčových finančních ukazatelů umožní širokému spektru uživatelů okamžité, finančně a technicky nenáročné zhodnocení bonity podnikatelského subjektu daného odvětví. Práce je rozdělena do celkem tří částí. V první jsou teoreticky shrnuty stávající přístupy k vyhodnocení bonity s cílem poukázat na praktické výhody zhodnocení prostřednictvím odvozovaného modelu. Druhá část je věnována statistickým klasifikačním metodám, zejména pak diskriminační analýze, jež je využita v případové studii. Třetí část je praktická. Zde jsou prostřednictvím diskriminační analýzy odvozeny klasifikační modely pro okruhy proměnných (finančních ukazatelů) identifikovaných v rámci komponentní, shlukové a faktorové analýzy jakožto stěžejní pro monitoring bonity. Závěrem je pak provedeno vyhodnocení a srovnání modelů. Rovněž jsou zde nastíněny postupy, jež by mohly vést k praktickému využití tohoto přístupu pro monitoring bonity.
