Security a la AMLO: An Evaluation of the Militarisation of Mexican Law Enforcement
Walker, Ellena ; Březinová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Conway, Maura (referee)
This thesis aims to provide an assessment of the militarisation of the Mexican Guardia Nacional (GN) under Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), as well as consider its societal implications in terms of citizen security, human rights, police reform, and the legal order. This research finds its value in its preliminary and exploratory nature, resting on a relatively understudied subject. The study provides one of the first attempts at measuring the status of the GN, which has evolved into the principal national guarantor of public security in Mexico. The evaluation of the GN was carried out through the establishment a scale of measurement based on commonalities with the Fuerzas Armadas (FA), which was applied to four separate indicators: material, cultural, organisational, and operational. All four indicators were found to share a high number of commonalities with the FA. As such, this thesis deems that the GN is undergoing a process of militarisation, and can be currently considered as similar to a 'constabularised military'. The implications of this assessment can be seen in terms of citizen security, human rights, police reform, and the legal order. It was found that while the GN had no impact on levels of violence or be seen to be moving away from a defined legal order, the body was...
The Chinese presence in Brazil
Milani, Benedetta ; Březinová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Nikolić, Luka (referee)
This study focuses on the Chinese presence in Brazil, particularly in its region crossed by the Amazon rainforest, and on understanding the different reasons which brought Beijing to increase its investments in the region and the impact that the latter can have at the international level, especially towards other actors, such as the European Union. In particular, it aims to understand how the Chinese influence in the Amazon rainforest impacts the trade relationship between Brazil and the EU concerning the export of raw materials from the region. Therefore, this research will focus on analyzing the strategy adopted by both Beijing and the EU to extend its economic and political influence in Brazil through the construction of infrastructure projects, which guarantee direct access to the natural resources of the Amazon rainforest.
China's growing influence in Latin America
Garcia Escalona, Zhayra Geraldine ; Březinová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The geopolitical implications of China's rising influence, especially in regard to growing China-US tensions is often limited to the larger system level, disregarding the role that regions can play. Additionally, the focus of scholarship and policy on the China threat rhetoric as well as implicit biases of Western IR analytical frameworks have resulted in a deficient understanding of China's motivations and foreign policy. Moreover, there are not many studies accounting for the latter in the context of the Latin American and Caribbean region, which points at a shortcoming in the literature. As such, this thesis seeks to reframe the perspectives used to understand Chinese foreign policy and offer insight into its workings, positing that ideational components (namely narratives evoking commonalities) are intrinsic to it and economic ones are secondary, contrary to common knowledge. At the same time, this thesis sustains that there is value in acknowledging the regional sub-system level in any geopolitical assessment, as it pertains to the system level interplay. To this purpose, the thesis dissects China's influence aims by grounding them on Chinese and Latin American perspectives, and relates them to China's foreign policy during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on mask and vaccine diplomacy. It then...
Coca eradication programs and environmental detriment in Colombia
Bregante, Camilla ; Březinová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
Camilla Bregante Coca eradication programs and environmental detriment in Colombia Abstract Conceived as U.S. assistance to Bogotá in combating Colombian drug cartels, Plan Colombia imposed the eradication of coca plants mainly through the fumigation with glyphosate. In the accusations against the Plan, human health issues largely surpassed discourses over environmental preservation. This thesis argued that the protection of biodiversity-rich Colombian ecosystems should be prioritized, hypothesizing harmful effects of Plan's implementation on flora and fauna. Building on the securitization theory, Colombian environmental detriment was proved to constitute a security issue. First, indeed, critical review of main toxicologists' studies on the matter revealed that the mixture used in fumigations deeply affects the ecosystems. Notably, a case study on Putumayo department emphasized damages on non-target vegetation and animals, which reduced to poverty the locals. Secondly, elaborating the data collected by the Integrated Illicit Crops Monitoring System (SIMCI) between 2001 and 2015, a comparative analysis between Putumayo and the Pacific region detected major crops displacement along the years, and, therefore, more and more forests cleared to grow coca. Finally, the last chapter described how, in the same...
Caterpillars food of Minois dryas on selected area
Hájková Březinová, Kateřina ; Vrabec, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kamil, Kamil (referee)
The dryad Minois dryas, described in 1763 by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, belogs to our endangered species of butterflies. Its expansion today is restricted to a few localities in Central and Southern Bohemia and Southern Moravia only. Renewal and preservation of appropriate types of biotopes and research of its autecology and bionomy play the key roles in conservation of this species. The intention of my thesis was to identify host plants of Minois dryas caterpillars, to find out which grass is the most preferred one and to verify the correctness of hypothesis that the most preferred plant is also dominant from the range of potential host plants in the chosen area (a meadow in the vicinity of Žehuň in Central Bohemia). In the first part of experiment caterpillars were offered grasses collected in Žehuň. Plants which were eaten by caterpillars, were determined as host plants. According to results of this stage the host plants of caterpillars in the Czech republic are Dactylis glomerata, Bromus erectus, Festuca rubra, Arrhenatherum elatius and Carex acutiformis. In the second part of experiment caterpillars were offered all grasses evaluated in the first part as host plants and frequency of eaten / untouched leaves was recorded. Results identified Bromus erectus as the most desired grass and statistical proved there was a strong dependance among the plants . As Bromus erectus is indeed the most dominant grass in the location (approx. 30 % of all grasses), the hypothesis was confirmed. The experiment contributed with some other knowledge about dryad's bionomy. Observations confirmed that caterpillars pupate at the turn of June and July, primarilly at night. Larvae pupates in or on the ground. I did not notice any silk spinning during the time of pupation which is mentioned by Beneš et al. (2002). The pupal stage lasted 22 -- 23 days. Butterflies hatched in the morning. Imagos chose red watermelon as a food in most cases which proves that adults prefer red colour while deciding on their food (Vrabec et al., 2007).
Analysis of the impact of the minimum wage on employment in the selected sectors of labour market in the Czech Republic from 1993 to the present
Březinová, Kateřina ; Štípek, Vladimír (advisor) ; Pikhart, Zdeněk (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the impact of the minimum wage on employment in the selected sectors of labour market in the Czech Republic from 1993 to the present. In this paper, the main focus is on the development of the minimum wage and on progression in employment and in average wages in selected sectors. Subsequent year changes during the period are used to analyze the correlation due to changes in the entire market, which illustrate the correlation context. Then I compare analysis results with the hypothesis that the minimum wage negatively affects employment, especially in those sectors where the lowest average wage outweight in a long term. Generally, we can say that the current level of the minimum wage in the Czech Republic has no significant effect on the labour market and even in sectors where the lowest average wage outweigh in a long term, since the proportion of the minimum wage to the average wage in our country (compared to other countries of the EU) is one of the lowest. Other political and economic factors have a more significant impact on employment.
