The Phenomenon of Taboo Behaviour in Czech Prosaic Folklore

Thesis is focused on motifs of taboo behavior in Czech prosaic folklore. The objective of this work was to depict how the motifs participate in folktales and legends, compare these motifs, describe their change in time and space and possible overlaps into to social reality. In the thesis is used as a method the textological analysis of narrative motifs in the primary sources of folklore narratives from the mid 19th century to the present. In summary are presented possible function of taboo in folklore narratives, relation of folklore and social reality based on taboo and variations in understanting a taboo phenomen in time.
Motif of name taboo in Czech verbal folklore

Bachelor thesis is focused on motif of the name taboo in Czech prosaic folklore. The objective of this work is to make a comprehensive description of the motif and its forms in Czech folklore and its introduction into the context of European folklore. For this purpose it uses mainly folklore indexes and collections of folktales and legends. It consists of five parts. The first part describes phenomen of the name taboo as it was recorded and conceptualized in anthropological researches conducted in many different societies around the world. The second part describes how international folklore indexes work with the motif of name taboo. The third part introduces into the issue of taboo words in the Czech context. The fourth and most extensive part of the work is focused on specific characters who appear in Czech folk narratives and whose names are taboo. These beings are classified into four categories - demonic characters, animals, humans and God. The last part, the conclusion, summarizes collected information about the phenomen, describes similarities and differences between the different motif forms and between the characters themselves and their behavior.
