The inscription of LPGs with a period of 0.17 up to 0.98mm with a focused CO.sub.2./sub. laser beam into an experimental non-commercial optical fiber under a variety of conditions is reported. The reproducibility of the LPG’s inscription process and an experiment with multiple inscription of LPGs are presented.

Inscription of the LPGs by a focused CO.sub.2./sub. laser beam in step-index fibers is reported. The transmission spectra of the LPGs fabricated in optical fibers drawn at 1880.sup.o./sup.C and 1930.sup.o./sup.C. under several inscription conditions are shown. The results indicate strong dependence of the LPG spectra on the conditions of the fiber drawing process and of the LPG fabrication. The first results of the preparation of a new type of a graded-index fiber for the LPG fabrication are reported too.
Optical fibers for chemical sensing
Matějec, Vlastimil ; Chomát, Miroslav ; Kašík, Ivan
The paper deals with performance of optical fibers for the development of chemical fibers. In its first part, there are physical basis shown are employed for the sensor design. Characteristics of particular types of fibers used in fiber-optic chemical sensors, namely polymer-clad silica /PCS/ fibers, sectorial fibers or fibers with special graded-index profiles are discussed in the next parts of the paper.
