COR: Web Tool for Clinical Evidence Retrieval in Cardiology

Research-based medical evidence is generated at an exponential rate, but it is not readily available to clinicians yet. Besides that clinical practitioners lack the time needed to search for it and lack the skills needed to identify it, appraise it and apply it in clinical decision-making. All that causes the need for new information resources reaching the „3Rs“ of evidence-based communication, i.e. reliability, relevance and readability. This work describes newly developed web application aimed to implement the mentioned features to evidence-based information resource in the field of cardiology. Selected entries from database PubMed are utilized as the source of trustworthy evidence.

The spectrum of information resources to support evidence-based medicine

Since the early 90s of the 20th century when it began to systematically develop tools and methodology for implementation of evidence-based medicine (EBM) into clinical practice, there has been considerable development of information resources and services designed to support EBM. This paper summarizes the current range of specialized documents, databases and information services focussed on this task, and mentions possible future developments in this area.

Database of biomedical information resources

The work describes the range of sources of scientific medical information and suggests a proposal for its classification, which takes into consideration the fact, that the quantity and diversity of scientific information sources in the major biomedical disciplines have been very extended. According to the traditional typology of databases used within the framework of the information and library science, information resources are sorted into four basic groups: the bibliographic, full text, factual, and sources of type of register, catalog and directory. Often we meet also with resources, which are a combination of the above mentioned types (hybrid sources). With the increasing amount of information in medicine, however, we can see not only expansion of the amount of databases within the categories, but also entirely new sources of information, which cannot be classified in any of the above groups. HTA and EBM: different names, a similar concept

The terms "Health Technology Assessment" and "Evidence-Based Medicine" are increasingly mentioned in various contexts recently. Projects in this area in terms of content and methodology often overlap, other time diverge. This work deals with the analysis of the motivation and objectives of processes, which stand in the background of the above mentioned concepts. In deeper analysis of their historical development and present interpretation one can trace not only common elements, but also the mutual complementarity.

Open Information Sources and Competitive Intelligence. Databases for Medical and Pharmaceutical Purposes

Competitive intelligence processes are often used in medical and pharmaceutical institutions and companies in the world. The pharmaceutical industry is a typical sector and meeting point of two main directions of corporative potential, i.e. research and development activities and business activities. Many open sources, e.g. databases from vendors and centers, are relevant both for R&D usage and for business utilization. This paper indicates overview of the relevant sources with their brief description and content characterization.
