The Regional Identity in the Borderlands

This volume is devoted to the subject of regional identity, which was the focus of the conference "European, National, or Regional Identity". The first section contains papers that have been based on longterm research on the population of the Euroregion Nisa. The population's identification with the region in the Czech part is generally based on the its environmental and aesthetic qualities. The second part of the volume contains papers with a theoretical orientation. Authors comment the relationships that the local border ů region community maintains toward the prospect of European integration.
Regional Identity of the Population in the Euroregion Nisa

Using biographic research methods the population in the Czech, German and Polish parts of euroregion were studied. The results show that for the time being no cross ůborder regional identity exist and each of the national parts can be characterised by a distinctiveness in the regional identity and mentality. The populationŽs identification with the region in the Czech part is generally based on the its environmental and aesthetic qualities. The least favourable situation for regional identity is evident in those parts in which the industry has been liquidated.
Working-class fraction of middle classes under socialism

The contribution focuses on the rise of the socialist middle classes from politically engaged workers after 1948 in the Czech part of the Nisa Euroregion. Rising career tracks have been documented: direct progress to the senior post, preparation of labour intelligence, support by accepting children from working-class families to universities. According to intergenerational biographical comparison, life's careers showed a shift from the working-class way of life. This socialistic middle class gained social and cultural capital and successfully adapted to the new conditions after year 1989.
Regional identity of the inhabitants of the (Czech part of) the Nisa euroregion

The aim of this disertation project is the knowledge of biographical and regional identity inhabitants of czech part of euroregion Nisa. The relation to the 'space living' has own development and inner dimensions. I will try to find and describe the roots and contenporary processes of regional identification of the inhabitants through their biographies. The aim is also an intergenerational comparision of the revolutionary historical events of last century, examined from the perspective of the individula experience, behavior and mentality of the 'older' and 'young' generations.The project is based on qualitative research procedures. The information basis is the biographical narratives of the generations of 'grandparents' and 'grandchildren' and deep analysis of their contents.
