Production Company Hypermarket Film and the Development of Czech Documentary Film After 2000
ZEMAN, Martin
This diploma thesis discusses the company Hypermarket Film (founded in 2003) of directors and producers Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda and its functioning within the institutions involved in the production, distribution and presentation of documentary films in the Czech Republic. The ambition of the presented work is also to identify the basic features of the development of Czech documentary film for the year 2000. It uses the methods of new film history together with specific approaches to documentary film (mainly the division according to the modes of representation of documentary film by Bill Nichols) and also deals with the ethical perspective of documentary film. Hypermarket Film is an example of a successful company that finances its films through custom production for television and streaming internet platforms, successfully applies for funding from the State Cinematography Fund and is able to secure capital also through crowdfunding campaigns. However, the focus of this company's work is not on commissions, but on original, committed and often innovative projects that are intended to provoke a societal discussion. Their reflexive, participatory and sometimes even performative films are often criticized in the discussion about the ethics and nature of documentary film in general. Hypermarket pays just as much attention to distribution and release as it does to the production and post-production of films. The films of the Hypermarket film company are often shown at domestic and foreign festivals, and there is interest in them in cinemas, as part of television shows or on streaming platforms. The text focuses not only on their most successful titles (Český sen, Czech Dream, 2004; V síti, Caught in the Net, 2020). Hypermarket Film was also at the birth of the award-winning television series Český žurnál (Czech Journal, 2012-2020), created for Czech Television, and co-produced important European documentaries by Vitaliy Manskiy. The two main personalities of this company are also active in other important institutions that participate in the development of documentary film in the Czech Republic: Vít Klusák is, among other things, a teacher at FAMU, Filip Remunda is in charge of the Documentary Film Institute.
Social behaviour and ecology of bats of the genus Pipisttrellus
Jahelková, Helena ; Horáček, Ivan (advisor) ; Řehák, Zdeněk (referee) ; Červený, Jaroslav (referee)
43 Summary of results of presented research Since discrimination of two cryptic species inside Pipistrellus pipistrellus s.l based on echolocation calls (Jones & van Parijs 1993), social calls (Barlow & Jones 1997), and molecular data (Barratt et al. 1997), the genus Pipistrellus have been studied intensively. The mainstream of my research were reproduction strategies and vocalization behaviour of Nathusius's pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii). It is a small European insectivorous species, which is known for his migratory behaviour. The dominant mating system is resource-defence polygyny. Males vocalize during flight (songflight) and from entrances of their day roosts (sedentary display). Advertising calls occur during whole active season, but they considerable increase during mating season. Males show strong fidelity to their mating roosts whereas females are fixed to maternity colonies (Schmidt 1984, Rachwald 1992, Gerell-Lundberg & Gerell 1994, Furmankiewitz 2003, Petersons 2004). This species exhibits variability in mating behaviour in different countries, probably due to long- distance migrations. In Czech Republic, the species was considered to be rare and only sporadic indications of reproduction were found (Hanák & Gaisler 1976, Šefrová & Buřič 1998). Main research area of my study was in South...
Mercury in stream sediments from a mining/smelting area: Sampling campaigns 10 years apart
Sýkorová, Kateřina ; Ettler, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Navrátil, Tomáš (referee)
This master thesis compares mercury concentrations in 64 samples of stream sediments from the Břehové Hory ore district (Příbram, Czech Republic), where lead and silver were mined and processed. Sampling took place in May 2003, September 2012 and October 2013 with intention to assess the influence of floods in August 2002 and June 2013 on changes of the level of mercury contamination in the stream sediments. In all three sampling campaigns, the background concentrations near the headwaters of the stream were about 0.2 mg Hg/kg, as a consequence of the weathering of geological units. Because of draining the historical mining and smelting region, the highest concentrations reach 3.2 mg Hg/kg downstream the Březové Hory ore district. The source of this contamination are probably former ore processing plants and the failures of tailing ponds. Extensive transport occurs especially during flood events and as the result, contamination can occur not only in the stream, but also in the alluvium materials. The main point source of the contamination in the area is the secondary Pb smelter, but its influence on the concentrations of mercury in stream sediment is insignificant. Nevertheless, it is a possible source of the contamination of the stream sediments with lead, cadmium and zinc. The concentrations up to...
Tree species influence on soil acidification: long-term trends and modeling
Oulehle, Filip ; Hruška, Jakub (advisor) ; Borůvka, Luboš (referee) ; Šantrůčková, Hana (referee)
Forest ecosystems belong to the part of environment most affected by the anthropogenic acidification. The structure of Central European forests was historically converted mostly into the Norway spruce monocultures. Such a forests received elevated acidic deposition since 1950s, from which large parts of mountain forests were killed by air pollution in 1970s and 1980s. After reduction of acidic deposition the forest soils were significantly delayed in chemical recovery compared to stream chemistry (Alewell et al., 2000). In this thesis we focused on long-term changes in soil chemistry at highly polluted area of Ore Mts., with particular interest in the tree species influence on soil acidification. The presented results including measurements of biogeochemical cycles within forest ecosystem at the Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.]) stand in the period 1992-2005 and at the European beech (Fagus sylvatica [L.]) stand between 2003-2005. The desorption of previously stored sulfur and the decrease of Ca deposition are the main factors controlling the recovery of soil solution at spruce stand. The reduction in Ca availability resulted in lower uptake by tree assimilatory tissues, measured as concentration in needles. The unexpected disappearing of nitrogen leaching from soil was undoubtedly the most...
Gamma null sets
Zelko, Matúš ; Zelený, Miroslav (advisor) ; Kaplický, Petr (referee)
The thesis is devoted to Gamma-null sets, which is a σ-ideal closely related to the differentiability of Lipschitz functions on Banach spaces. However, apart from the in- troduction, where we quickly summarize some known results on the differentiability of Lipschitz functions, the work does not focus on this aspect. The aim of the thesis is to show that the Gamma-null sets are well defined and to supplement the proofs of some known properties. The main contribution is a detailed treatment and completion of the omitted steps of the proof that Gamma-null and Lebesgue-null sets in Rn coincide. The main steps of the proof, as well as the concept of Gamma-nullness, come from the paper by Joram Lindenstrauss and David Preiss, On Fréchet differentiability of Lipschitz maps between Banach spaces (2003), which the thesis builds upon. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates that Gamma-null sets form a non-trivial σ-ideal, the proof is not directly taken from the literature. 1
Communication and panic action
Čižinská, Kateřina ; Vinopal, Jiří (advisor) ; Šafr, Jiří (referee)
Crisis communication in today's world is influenced by globalisation and the interconnectedness of the world. People around the world access information quickly and from the comfort of their homes. Research focusing on crisis communication is gradually revealing the underlying models influencing crisis communication (risk perception theory, mental noise, negative dominance, trust determination, and emergent norm theory). Crisis communication can actively influence a person's resulting emotions. Sometimes it is important to make an apathetic audience more active and sometimes the goal is to calm the audience down again (Sandman, 2003). The form of the message or the setting of the audience itself can also play a role (Bier, 2001). There are more vulnerable populations who may find the message itself harder to understand, harder to adapt to change and/or may be more prone to panic behaviour (Lead, 2008, Mallon et al, 2013). The research itself focuses specifically on the effects of communication styles on populations at risk of an emergency. This is a secondary analysis of CVVM data from 2023 (N=861) and the primary method chosen is multiple regression. The communication styles selected are: sharing even less likely scenarios, differences in the role of the communicator of a given message, framing...
Factors influencing the educational aspirations of primary school students
Husovská, Christiana ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Wirthová, Jitka (referee)
The thesis addresses the topic of educational aspirations, which is perceived as one of the important issues in the field of educational inequalities. Specifically, the thesis focuses on the factors influencing the educational aspirations of fifteen-year-old students from elementary schools in the Czech Republic and how these factors have evolved from the year 2003 to 2022. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the key concepts related to educational aspirations and also introduces social stratification models, which partially underpin the study of such aspirations. The thesis also presents the results of previous studies on educational aspirations, particularly from the Czech context, which were subsequently utilized in the practical part. This section of the thesis is dedicated to the analysis of data from the international PISA survey, specifically its editions spanning from the year 2003 to 2022. The analysis focuses on identifying significant factors influencing educational aspirations and their development over the observed period. The most important factors influencing educational aspirations were found to be gender, mathematical abilities, parental education, as well as socioeconomic index, and cultural capital of the family. The evolution of these factors over time appears to be...
Selected somatic factors of elite tennis players
Vašíčková, Adéla ; Carboch, Jan (advisor) ; Kočíb, Tomáš (referee)
Title of the thesis: Selected somatic factors in elite male and female tennis players The goal of the thesis: The aim is to find out what trend - development tendency we observe in selected somatic factors of elite male and female tennis players in the period 2003-2023. The secondary aim is to find out what opinion tennis experts have on this issue. Method: To obtain the data, a mixed research consisting of quantitative and qualitative parts was chosen. The data in the quantitative part was processed based on descriptive statistics, as well as using regression analysis and statistical (ANOVA) and substantive significance (Cohen's d). Body height, weight and BMI were analyzed for males and body height for females. The qualitative part of the research was based on structured interviews with open- ended questions. Results: For the period between 2003-2023, the average body height for men was 187,8 cm and for women 175, 8 cm. The average body weight for men was 83,0 kg and BMI was 23,5. There was an increasing trend in the average bodyheight of men, with an increase of 5 cm when comparing 2003 and 2023. The average bodyweight of males has not show a significant upward trend but has instead decreased over the last five years to values comparable at the beginning of the period. The BMI of men has...
Czech and French Media Response and Critical Reception of Milan Kundera's Novel Ignorance
Hávová, Kristýna ; Malý, Radek (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This thesis deals with Milan Kundera's novel Ignorance and its Czech and French media response and critical reception. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical anchor for the analyzed texts. Therefore, it first defines the terms literary criticism and review, then offers a biographical context of Milan Kundera's work, which is divided into Czech, French and later period in the new millennium, and also introduces and interprets the book Ignorance. Then, through the characterization of the French and Czech media, divided into cultural and literary, news and opinion, and in the case of the French ones, also regional media, on which the examined response is based, it moves on to the analysis of the texts. The thesis aims to map, analyze, evaluate and compare the media-critical reception of the novel in the Czech Republic and France. The main questions the thesis seeks to answer are therefore: How is the novel Ignorance perceived and evaluated by French and Czech critics? In what aspects do the responses differ or coincide in both countries? Since the book, although written in French, was first published in Spain in 2000, then in France three years later in the spring of 2003, and in Czech translation only at the end of 2021, attention will also be paid to the possible influence that the time...
The impact of the U.S. invasion on Iraqi education during 2003-2010
Jaškina, Anna ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This thesis examines how the 2003 US invasion reshaped Iraq's education system from 2003 to 2010, highlighting the pivotal role of education in the country's reconstruction. Beginning with Saddam Hussein's era, marked by politicized schools but also notable educational achievements in the 1980s, it subsequently delves into the disruptive effects of the Gulf War and UN sanctions on Iraqi society. The thesis then analyzes the upheaval caused by the invasion and occupation, particularly focusing on its repercussions for primary, secondary, and tertiary education, as well as its social impact on children and adolescents. Additionally, it evaluates the role of international humanitarian aid, with a specific focus on initiatives led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Ultimately, the thesis contends that while the US invasion significantly impacted Iraqi education, pre-existing conflicts and poorly executed reconstruction efforts compounded the challenges. It underscores the urgent need to prioritize the restoration of education and healthcare as fundamental steps towards rebuilding Iraqi society.
