The Indication of Rheme in the English and Czech Parallel Texts

This thesis deals with the indication of the sentence position and the syntactic function of rheme. The key is the analysis based on the comparison of parallel texts, i.e. the English written texts translated into Czech and vice versa. In the theoretical part some linguistic approaches to the description and characterization of syntax are presented. However, the most relevant theory for the thesis is the FSP theory. In the practical part a proper research is conducted. The research is based on the analysis of samples coming from different genres. Firstly separate syntactic structures are compared and then it is ascertained to what extent the sentence position and the syntactic function of rheme are retained. After that, the means of indication of rheme (word order, semantics, specific syntactic structures, etc.) are analyzed. In the final part of the thesis the quantitative results of the study are presented.
