Dystopian Elements in Michel Houellebecq's Novel Submission
Svatošová, Eliška ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
This Bachelor's thesis is dedicated to the novel Submission (original title: Soumission) written by a contemporary French writer Michel Houellebecq, where he depicts France in a foreseeable future governed by a president who is a member of Muslim political party. This work aims to analyse to what extent the book can be considered as dystopia or social science fiction. To be able to answer this question, we begin by analysing some of the representative books of the genre, namely 1984 by George Orwell, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Ashes, Ashes by René Barjavel. This first step allows us to establish the genre characteristics and then to compare Submission to them. Consequently, we can certify that the book has some of the features typical for dystopies and social science fictions, nevertheless this analysis let us discover aspects that exclude the book from the invoked category. Last but not least, we approach a subject of reasons that the author considers in his critique of the current French society to be crucial for the phenomenon that some call "the crisis of the West". Key words Houellebecq, Submission, dystopia, crisis of the West, social science fiction, political fiction, Islamization
Barbey d'Aurevilly between Romanticism and Decadence
Lebedová, Anna ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
(in English): The main objective of the thesis Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly between romanticism and decadence is not only to describe Barbey's novels Un Prêtre marié and L'Ensorcelée but specially to put these two works into context of decadent aesthetics. At the beginning of this work stood the question of whenever we can consider Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly (similarly to Charles Baudelaire) to be a pioneer of the decadent movement. We will be analysing generally universal themes, such as love, pride or revolt, but we will see them through the prism of decadence, allowing them to obtain new meanings. The same motive of love, standing for passion in a romantic work, attains in Barbey's universe a character of a pathological instinct. We have divided our work into three chapters. The first one represents a theoretical part, in which we had put Barbey's work into its literary-historical context, and we had shown the topics of the generation of "disenchanted" romantics preceding the generation of decadents. Consequently, we have arrived at the main motives of decadence par excellence. The second chapter, in which we focus on the novel Un Prêtre marié, is then the essential core of our work. Through character analysis we study motives such as hysteria, incest, pride, sadomasochism, sexuality and others,...

Then it briefly shows important historical events that led to britannic renaissance, in other words to the time, when Anatole Le Braz lived and wrote his books. The following parts concentrate on cultural interferences of Celtic and Christian faith and on extraordinary strong state of Death. The main part of the thesis consists of chapters dedicated to the description of Ankou, night laundress and rector, including analysis of some legends, in which those characters are situated. Inspiration in Graffigny's Lettres d'une Péruvienne within the context of the French Enlightenment
Schlaichert, Miroslav ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
The present bachelor's thesis analyzes one of the most famous French 18th century novels. Lettres from a Peruvian Woman are, as to its form, an epistolary novel and, as for its genre characteristics, an example of the sentimental and philosophical tradition. The aim of this work is, above all, to ascertain how the author was inspired by all of these traditions. First we will delimit the epistolary novel and, subsequently, specify the two basic types which were commonly used during the 18th century. Later on we will focus on the historical, philosophical and sentimental side of the novel and show author's masterful ability to make it one well- functioning literary unit. At the end we will focus on the novel's denouement and its interpretation in which the sense-sensibility dichotomy is present. As to the results, we find out that Graffigny composed a novel which constitutes an organical unit of well-communicating traditions.
