Ferdinand Kafka (1841-1926) . Period Cultural Educational Activity in the Region

The bachelor thesis is focused on the personage of Ferdinand Kafka (1841-1925), a representative of period cultural and educational activities in the context of the Malé Svatoňovice area, at the utter end of Czech lands, lying at the sharp Czech-German linguistic line. Public activities of Ferdinand Kafka occur in the second half of the 19th century and the first two decades of the following one. The case study is on a topic which has never been researched, and works with a historical-comparative method that draw from a large amount of primary sources, such as from personal archives of Kafka's family or the document collection of the amateur theatre. This profile takes notice of Kafka's life events, family and social background, and, above all, of his work for the region. We can find Ferdinand Kafka as a council man, responsible for decision making in his home town, and as a speaker of the people, ensuring communication between inhabitants and their aristocrats. He is described as a folk writer and a gifted public narrator. This follower of revivalist traditions contributed to national culture also by the foundation of a large number of local Czech educational guilds, such as the readers'company. The Mapping Survey of the Libušín cottage

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to create a thematic map and a ground plan of the Libušín cottage in the Pustevny area, Moravskoslezske Beskydy mountains, Czech republic. The cottage burned down in 2014 and soon will be completely rebuilt. Data about the object were collected using GNSS system, total station and a laser distance meter. Digital outputs at the scales of 1:50 to 1:200 were created in MicroStation system.
The management of language maintenance and shift in the Czech language community in Chicago

The Master's thesis The management of language maintenance and shift in the Czech language community in Chicago examines (based on the analysis of the transcript of more than twenty hours of recordings of testimonies of thirteen speakers from Czech-speaking areas of western peripheries of American Chicago who have been living outside the Czech countries for more than forty years) the issues of language maintenance, transmission to future generations, and language shift in the expatriate community. The work analyses the environment and diverse situations of possible contact with the Czech language, reflected by the speakers, as well as the importance of national institutions (such as expatriate associations, minority schools, Czech parishes, etc.) for language maintenance of individuals. Respondents reflect also the conditions under which they were able to pass the Czech language to succeeding generations." It analyses testimonies of Czech Americans on what reactions they have received on language features showing their origin (such as foreign accent and name) and what assimilation strategies they used to moderate such stigma. The project examines, from the perspective of simple language management, how bilingual skills and the identity of respondents interact in a research interview.
Naše menšiny /our minorities (later Naše hranice/Our boundaries), an intewar journal supporting the Czech community in the nationally mixed regions of southeast Bohemia

"Our Minorities (later Our Boundaries), an interwar magazine supporting Czech minority in nationally mixed regions of Nord-East Bohemia" presents for the first time a longer embracive characterization of a First Republic periodical, seated in Malé Svatoňovice, and published between 1920-1938 (XVII and XVIII volumes already as Our Boundaries). This thesis uses a method of historical analysis and besides of information about publishing, personalities connected with this monthly paper (particularly J. M. Vlček) and contents of sections, recognizing how this already not very known regional serial wanted to support Czech minorities in a mainly German speaking borderline area.

The 2010 increase of tuition fees at British universities

The bachelor thesis is a case study based on an analysis of the problems of higher education in Great Britain. In the first part, it deals with the genesis of the decision of British government to increase tuition fees of public universities. This took place in 2010 in the United Kingdom (apart from free Scottish schools). The second part analyzes arguments for and against the tuition fee increase. The period studied is from May to December 2010, meaning, between the general election which concluded in the creation of a surprising coalition of Liberal Democrats and Conservatives, and the tuition fees vote in the parliament. The differing views on university funding and on educational budget cuts between the two governmental parties caused disagreements in the coalition as well as within the parties. Liberal Democrats had to solve the dilemma whether to support the decision of promoting fee increase and following the recommendations of Browne's Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance, or to fulfill their pre-election promises, which were basically founded on the rejection of tuition fees. The proposal had some positive reactions from universities (Russell Group, UUK), raising arguments like the graduates' benefits from a degree, increase in competitiveness of British higher education...
