Semiotic construction of media image of the Czechoslovak Radio and its function as the part of broadcasting in the crisis moments of the history (May 1945, August 1968, November 1989)
Štípková, Miroslava ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Jungová, Eliška (referee)
Semiotic construction of the media image of the Czechoslovak Radio and function as part of the show in exalted moments of history our republic (May 1945, August 1968, November 1989). The model of the show during periods exalted was created especially during the Prague Uprising in May 1945 and was repeated for the entry of troops "friends" in August 1968. One can still find older signs before the Second world war, and to a smaller extent even later, during the first days of the Velvet Revolution in November 1989. But then Czechoslovak Radio no longer preached freedom, on the contrary, she remained loyal to the totalitarian regime power and it has long concealed what was really happening. Knotová, Markéta ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to analyse certain parts of promotional campaign for referendum on accession of the CR to the EU. The media campaign took place in May and June 2003 and the referendum was held on 13th and 14th June, 2003. I chose five representative ads, three of them being television spots, one radio spot and one poster, which were published in various Czech media during May and June 2003.197 More precisely, they were three pieces (tv spot, radio spot and poster) made by government of the CR198, one piece made by public-service Czech television and one spot made by commercial Nova television. This division makes it clear that I distinguish governmental activities from activities of the media. The thesis was mainly focused on the governmental campaign and the other two spots were there to bring some comparison. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Baláková, Zuzana ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the selected protectorate and socialist propaganda posters from the forties and early fifties of the 20th century. The analyzed period ends with year 1953. This particular piece of work strives to set the whole subject in a larger theoretical framework. Furthermore the characteristic features of the given ideologies, the theory of semiotics and a brief description of the given historical period is also encompassed. Within the theory of semiotics the main inspiration is drawn from the works of Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Sanders Peirce and Charles Morris. The most crucial source for the semiotic analysis is the book Mythology from Roland Barthes, especially its second theoretical part of Myth today, from which the methodological approach was gathered. The semiotic analysis allows one to uncover and expose the hidden meanings of texts. Ten posters were chosen in total for the analysis, five from the protectorate era and five from the late forties and early fifties. This was carried out in order to juxtapose pairs of images which portray the same motif or theme. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the applied semiotic components of the individual posters and then to compare the respective motifs and elements within the two ideologies and the extent to...

Švejda, Josef ; Průchová, Andrea (advisor) ; Šoltys, Otakar (referee)
This thesis analyzes news photographs related to the Old Town Square and its task is to explore the role of a place in a city and how it determines the myths in visual messages. The theoretical part focuses on the context of semiotics and news photographs and describes the possibilities in interpreting meanings of visual communication. In relation to photographic messages, it also reflects the analytical background at the level of myth, based on the work of Roland Barthes. Theoretical part also takes in account the symbolic and historical values of the Old Town Square. The analysis itself is based on a sample of 20 randomly selected photographs present in MF Dnes and Blesk, which cover events taking place in the Old Town Square between 1993 and 2013. Using comparative semiotic analysis it focuses on the visual content of news photographs in these journals, while observing how the Old Town Square takes part in the connotative chains and resulting myths.

Kolátorová, Lucie ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Zezulková, Markéta (referee)
This thesis deals with the medialization of public health-threatening events associated with the methanol affair, which appeared in Czech republic in September 2012. The quantitative part mainly describes how much space was in the examined newspapers provided with the affair, what kind of sub-themes were most accented, how much importance was over time attributed to the affair, what the motives were displayed in the published photographs, to what extent was preserved news neutrality of published headlines. The qualitative part of the research focuses on the linguistic tools used in articles in term of neutrality, on non-verbal expression tools and in detail illustrates how the examined newspapers reported about specific events associated with the methanol affair.

Standard and non-standard language in printed media communication and its impact on discussions about standard language
Pospíšilová, Martina ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The present Master's thesis analyses language means in printed media with a particular focus on national daily newspapers from the second trimester of 1993. That year, there was an important linguistic conference on standardised Czech and language culture. The analysis examines especially language means that deviate from the standardised norm of the language. The theoretical part discusses key concepts, such as norm and codification or national language and its varieties. The understanding of these terms is critical for the analytical part of the thesis where language means used in printed media are being analysed using quantitative content analysis. The aim of this analysis is to describe their motivation of use and function. The results are then compared with the proceedings of the 1993 conference on standardised Czech and language culture held in Olomouc. The thesis provides a clear view on how the occurrence of non-standardised language means in media influences academic discussion on standardised Czech.

The analysis put a particular emphasis on eristic dialectics, the concept created by Arthur Schopenhauer, which is understood to be a science of human intransigence. The concepts of Rhetological Fallacies of Jiří Kraus or David McCandless are taken into consideration in the second place as well.
