The Irish Lisbon Treaty Referendums 2008 and 2009: Which themes were present in the debate?
Powell, Maximilian ; Broad, Matthew (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The overall aim of this research is to explore the themes debated during both Irish Lisbon Treaty referendums. As the literature will expose, much has been written on the reasons why the result moved so emphatically from a 'no' to a 'yes' vote. We know that the referendums had different results, however, we may have lost sight of the campaigns themselves and the public discussions as independent phenomena. As this thesis will demonstrate, EU integration is not an easy phenomenon to describe, with citizens often feeling no direct interaction with the EU institutions. National politicians and the media, therefore, serve as mediators and have an important role in helping citizens to make sense of European integration. It is therefore worthwhile analysing the key themes that arose during both Irish referendums within the context of Irish political and economic concerns of the time, and investigating how issues of European integration were framed by the 'yes' and 'no' campaigns and reflected in the broadsheet media to achieve cut through to Irish citizens. Learning Curve of the Conditionality of the EU's Enlargement Policy - the Role of the "Good Neighborhood Principle" in the Case of Border Disputes.
Lipská, Jana ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
DP JANA LIPSKÁ Abstract The thesis examines the policy of good neighborliness as one of the conditions for the accession of (Balkan) countries to the EU. As it is an unanchored concept, the thesis should focus on its development and the possibility of its enforcement as a conditionality. It is its enforceability that the EU has at least partially achieved after the enlargement to Croatia in 2013, or by modifying the conditionality in 2018, when the settlement of bilateral disputes became a condition for the admission of the new state. This paper explains this change in conditionality and what led EU officials to make it. The EU has also changed its role in these disputes. It has moved from being an active mediator to a passive position from which it primarily motivates the parties involved in the dispute to resolve it. The EU demonstrates its role as a normative power, which is what it uses conditionality for. The basic premise is that previously the EU has tried to intervene more and resolve such disputes, while at the same time it accepted states that have not resolved them. The Union has learned from this and its policy has changed to less involvement but more emphasis on resolving such disputes. This thesis recalls the fundamental turning point that led to the decision of EU leaders, which was Croatia's...
Application of Article 7 of the TEU: the cases of Poland, Hungary and Romania
Sechovcová, Anežka ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
Some of the member states of the European Union are currently facing a rule of law crisis characterized by threats to the independence of the judiciary, to the media or to the freedom of speech. The situation is most critical in Hungary and Poland where these values are being systematically violated. However, Romania is also among the member states facing a crisis of the rule of law, mainly because of the threatsto the independence of judiciary and the limitation of anti-corruption measures. Since the value of the rule of law is enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union, its violation is a reason for sanctioning the member state. The European Union has several instruments at its disposal to sanction these states and as well protect European values. One of the most important is the mechanism under the Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union which can cause a member state to lose its voting rights in the Council of the European Union. Using the process tracing method, the thesis traces the steps taken by the European institutions to apply this mechanism in the cases of Poland, Hungary, and Romania. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether there are interdependencies among the three cases. Based on the research, it can be concluded that there are significant differences among the...
The civil rights movement in Northern Ireland and its portrayal in the local periodical
Brčáková, Anna ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The presented bachelor thesis concerns the topic of the media image of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland in the local period press. The method of qualitative analysis and concept of frames is being used for the examination of the articles dealing with the five chosen important events in the period of the movement in the years 1968 and 1969. The events consist of the Caledon protest, the first civil rights march, the civil rights march in Derry/Londonderry, the announcement of a reform five-point plan, and the march of the People's Democracy. The thesis aims to explore the differences in the media coverage of these events in the periodicals of various socio-political orientations. Therefore, the selected newspapers include the most read titles with different editorial policies - traditional unionist leaning The News Letter (Belfast Newsletter), nationalist The Irish News, and liberal unionist The Belfast Telegraph. The analysis takes into consideration the amount, length, and placement of the articles, which indicates the level of importance of the event for the periodical. The main focus, however, is dedicated to the stance of the newspapers on the movement. Therefore, a system of categories is used to indicate sympathy or antipathy for the events. Moreover, the frames used for the...
Integration Policies of Ireland Between 2007-2020
Feňová, Marie ; Lukešová, Anna (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The thesis deals with Irish integration policies in the period 2007-2020. In 2007, the first key office for integration was established, the Office of the Minister for Integration (OMI), which was the predecessor of today's Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration (OPMI). This office was key to the creation of the Migration Nation Strategy, which was issued by the Office in 2008. This is why this whole period of integration policies has been framed by the only two Irish integration strategies issued so far. The Migration Nation Strategy and The Migrant Integration Strategy-Blueprint for the Future, already mentioned, published in 2017. In the 1990s, thanks mainly to economic prosperity, Ireland experienced a turnaround from a predominantly emigrating state to an immigration state. Thanks to the ever increasing number of asylum seekers and the number of immigrants in the country, Ireland had to start to develop, deepen and streamline integration policies. The thesis first defines the concepts related to the topic of integration and immigration, and in the actual stat of the thesis it already deals with the strategies mentioned above. First, it describes what goals the strategies set for the future, what progress they have already made, and in the last chapter there is the very analysis of how...

Obrazová, Barbora ; Havelka, Vít (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The main subject of this thesis is the Europeanisation of anti-corruption laws in the Czech Republic in the time period 2009-2014. Specifically is examined the influence of the European Commission on the approved anti-corruption laws in the Czech Republic. The thesis consists of two main parts, theoretical and research. In the theoretical part are defined corruption and anti-corruption laws for the purpose of the research. Furthermore, the theoretical part describes the Europeanisation and anti-corruption policy of the European Commission, including all its actors and instruments at the disposal of the European Commission. The research part is also divided into two parts. The first part summarises the Europeanisation of all anti-corruption laws adopted in the Czech Republic between 16 September 2009 and 31 October 2014. The second part focuses in detail on the Europeanisation of the Public Procurement Act. The aim of the research is to show how many of the adopted anti-corruption laws were Europeanised and in what way.
EU and Terorism - Evolution of Common Policy 1999-2005
Hulicius, Eduard ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis is dedicated to answer a question: How does the legislative and institutional answer of the EU on a challenge of new "superterrorism" look and are they different from traditional answers on "national terrorism"? The major problem of European anti-terrorism policy is the fact, that it is a relatively new issue. Efforts to organise on basis of existing integration a common coordinating policy in the 1970's and 1980's were only minor and unimportant. The impulse created in Maastricht Treaty on European union by establishing a pillar structure of the EU was important due to development of the third Pillar dedicated to Justice and Home affairs (JHA). Intergovernmental nature of this pillar has reduced possibilities of the central institutions to influence creation of the new policies. However, a new agency - EUROPOL. European police agency was to be established thanks to the Treaty. Combat with terrorism was only one of many targets of the newly created JHA policies throughout 1990's. Action Plan on JHA from Tampere (1999) focused primarily on migration issues. The EU is focusing on a multi- forged strategy to deal with terrorism. In comparison to example of the USA is the main focus of the E U laid on internal policies. The EU position can be described as responsive - although the latest development...
