Discourse Analysis of Representation of the Greek Crisis in Wall Street Journal

This thesis analyzes media representation of Greek crisis in the Wall Street Journal at the time of parliamentary elections in Greece in June 2012. Using the method of critical discourse analysis the thesis characterizes the specific representation, while focusing on the representation of key actors, their relationships and the economic program called austerity. This thesis argues that the representation reflects the discourse of neoliberalism, it demonstrates that it legitimizes the austerity plan and it identifies the means of argumentation, on which the discourse draws.
The role of American media on Spanish-American conflict in 1898

This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of American media on the decision to intervene in Cuba in 1898. The aim is to find out the reasons for the American intervention in Cuba and the role of American media, especially tabloids, in this decision making. The paper analyzes and justifies the factors that influenced the decision of President William McKinley. The first part describes the change of American media at the end of nineteeth century and explains the concept of yellow journalism that links to tabloids. The second part deals with events and political decisions before American intervention and ends with a brief description of the conflict. The last part discusses the role of tabloids in the context of the conflict. There are some arguments that focus specifically on the impact of reports on the American public and the penetration into politics. It has been found that the influence of American tabloids at that time is overestimated and was not the main reason for the US intervention on the island.
The media image of the presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016

The bachelor thesis "The media image of the presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016" deals with the presentation of Donald Trump on the front pages of Rzeczepospolita and The Times. The work is time-bound between 1 February and 30 November 2016, that is, from the start of the US primaries to the presidential election, incl. the period immediately following the election. The aim of the thesis is on the base on the verification of the established hypotheses to introduce the elements that were part of Donald Trump's media image, presented by Rzeczpospolita and The Times. When verifying the hypotheses, the theoretical starting points of the concept of the agenda setting and their framing are used. And then, theory of news values focusing on the front pages and media geography are applied. The first part of the thesis deals with the theoretical definition of media studies, mass media research and the US political system. It follows the research part - the quantitative image analysis and the qualitative discourse analysis. Primary sources of the analysis are the front pages of The Times and Rzeczpospolita. Based on this analysis, conclusions are worked out.
The American Media's Failure before the Iraq War in 2003

The bachelor's thesis The American Media's Failure before the Iraq War in 2003 deals with the media's uncritical coverage of the threat posed by Iraqi program of weapons of mass destruction. The thesis analyses American print media coverage in period after the attacks of September 11, 2001 until the beginning of the Iraq War in March 2003. It seeks to determine the cause of this major crisis in the history of American journalism The thesis is divided into three sections. The first part deals with intensive pro-war campaign under the Bush administration in an attempt to achieve political and social consent for the invasion to Iraq. The political marketing campaign consisted of the manipulation of WMD intelligence, escalation of rhetoric about the danger that Iraq posed to the United States and speculations about Iraqi support of terroristic organisations. The second section of the thesis is dedicated to a comparative content analysis of prewar coverage at The New York Times and newspapers published by The Knight Ridder. The final part traces the changes in American journalism in recent years. It explains how the quality of prewar coverage was influenced by these changes such as rising economic pressure, frequently quoted anonymous sources, unbalanced coverage in favor of the administration position...
Czech-German Declaration in selected Czech and German daily newspapers

In this paper I study point of view of four czech and german newspapers and points of view of people, which they cement and that all in case of Czech-German Declaration. The studied newspapers are Czech Právo and MF Dnes and on the other side German Süddeutsche Zeitung and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. These will be compared i four time perionds: December 1996 - January 1997, May 1997, first and tenth anniversary of Declaration.
Analysis of Czech and German secondary vocational education

The bachelor thesis "Analysis of Czech and German secondary vocational education" deals with the educational systems in both countries, focusing on secondary vocational education. In the first part of the paper, educational systems of both countries are presented in relation to the legislative framework as well as to the political debate on their possible changes. In the second part of the thesis, both systems of the secondary vocational education are thoroughly analyzed. The third part of the thesis consists of a case study that describes the collaboration between the company Gerresheimer Horšovský Týn and the Vocational School Domažlice. This cooperation leads to the adoption of some elements of German dual education system (Duale Ausbildung) into the Czech system of vocational education. At this point, the analysis is accompanied also by the examination of the reflection of this activity in the local newspaper called Domažlický deník. Based on the analysis of educational systems and vocational education in both countries, it is concluded that there are significant differences between the Czech and the German approach and that these differences cannot be overcome due to the current Czech legislation. North Bohemian panel construction: Comparison of housing estates Severní Terasa, Ruprechtice and Březenecká

The topic of this bachelor's thesis is a comparison of three selected North Bohemian housing estates, which are the Březenecká housing estate in Chomutov, the Severní Terasa housing estate in Ústí nad Labem and the Ruprechtice housing estate in Liberec. These housing estates will be compared within three categories: construction and used technology; architecture and aesthetics of the housing estate; and demographic structure of the housing estate. These housing estates were selected according to the principles of comparability. In all three cases, these housing estates are panel buildings, designed in the 1960s and their construction began in 1970 at the latest. All of the housing estates were built in the North Bohemian Region. In addition to the comparison of housing estates, this work also contains a theoretical insight into the history of the construction of panel buildings in Czechoslovakia.
The Potsdam Agreement in the Reunited Germany

The thesis deals with the document that determined the form of Central Europe after the Second World War. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first one is about the legal nature of the Potsdam Agreement, particularly if it can be considered as a valid international treaty, effectual for Germany. The core of the second part lies in the effect of this document on forming relations among Germany and Poland and Czechoslovakia, later only the Czech Republic. As far as Poland is concerned (the crucial was particularly the change of boundaries and their anchoring in the Oder-Neisse line. Regarding Czechoslovakia the most important article is the article XIII, where it was decided to transfer German inhabitants orderly. Germans from Czechoslovakia established a Sudeten German expatriate association in Germany which just in time after the unification of Czechoslovakia began to develop an activity that was an essential element in the formation of official relations. There are different legal opinions, political documents and international treaties which the above mentioned states had concluded.
Artists scene in 1980s and its connections to the West

The thesis deals with the question 'what kind of connections between the alternative cultural scene in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s and the western art scene were most frequent?', and questions their usefulness and influence on the development of art in Czechoslovakia. There is given the definition of 'alternative culture' and the definition of the artistic scene in the eighties. The thesis is based on interviews with important figures of that period, historical documents and further analyzes case studies of the connections with West. Besides remarkable events of the non-official scene, characteristics of the selected figures of that period the thesis also presents basic documents and statements establishing the significant artistic groups of late eighties, Tvrdohlaví, 12/15 Pozdě, ale přece, and Nová skupina. The thesis describes the term ‚social discoloration', and the question of the possible delay of East European art behind the Western one. Final part of the thesis proposes the general typology of the connections between non-official community and the West.
