A memory of technical images: Diary films of Jonas Mekas

Jonas Mekas connects in his work amateur mode of filming with professional motivations of experimental filmmaker. His film style is based on the aesthetics of home movies and he turns attention to his own personal, individual experience. He and the other filmmakers of The New American Cinema wrested film from the classical studio mode of production, established a new distributional circuit of the independent cinema and founded institutions dedicated to archive and study avantgarde and experimental cinema. The main objective of this thesis is to describe, how home movies came into use as a formal medium of communication for independent filmmakers in New York in the fifties and sixties. This thesis focuses mainly on the work of Lithuanian experimental filmmaker, poet, film critic and organiser Jonas Mekas. The main interest is in, how Mekas removes home movies from their original context and how are home movies perceived beyond their primary context in general. Therefore I define according to Roger Odin signs and functions of home movies in terms of the family institution. I specify various fields of cinema, which Mekas merges in his work. I study strategies, which are used to process home movies in a detailed analysis of Mekas's film As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty...

Measuring Czechoslovaks. Czech Society of Biotypology and Constitutional Medicine in Czechoslovakia 1937-1959

This doctoral thesis describes the formation, activities and dissolution of the Czech Society of Biotypology (1937-1959), herein used as an example of impact of the constitutional typology (human typology science) on the Czechoslovak medicine. Human constitution science (in French and Romance languages called biotypology) classifies individual human beings on the base of morphological and physiological characteristics, with particular emphasis on forecast of future trends. The core of the science focuses on correlation between the physical appearance of a person and his/her mental characteristics. The Czech Society of Biotypology (Česká společnost biotypologická - ČSB) was founded with ambitions not only to study human beings, but also to increase their potential. The whole movement was therefore conceived as an example of a sanitation scientific program in accordance with the governmental interest in rationalization of population care. The methodology of the thesis is based on Foucault's concept of biopower - change of power strategies and their constitutive influence on the development and change of social relations, values and individual strategies of persons. Camereless Violence

The code assigned to the subject, entering into interactive environment, is setting and determining its future existence. In the virtual environment, the absence of a numerical description makes a subject untrackable. Only by assigning a unique code does the affair begin to exist for the computing world. After receiving the code, the subject somehow comes to life, becoming recognisable, categorised, searchable - possessing existence.
Every environment we are situated in can be perceived as panned and scanned. Cameraless photography, we meet in a moment of our existence, in an artificial space. We are scanning and at the same time we are being scanned.
In the process of scanning and taking pictures, what part is the human playing?
A person who can be seen as a tool of cameraless photography? Is he following the rules, or creating them? Or, is he himself a tool to the process of cameraless photography? Is he the individual who determines and recognizes the point that is set for the existence and meaning of cameraless photography?

The Aesthetic of the Crime Scene Photography: The Case of Arthur “Weegee” Fellig

The forensic photography has a great practical significance as it serves as one of the main means of capturing theinitial appearance of the crime scene and physical evidence of various objects that have evidentiary value in criminal cases. Photography as a means of permanent, authentic, accurate and objective record of the reality thus very often plays pivotal role during criminal investigations and court proceedings. For these purposes, crime scene photography has to follow particular set of conventionalised rules, techniques and methods. The present thesis aims to describe the crime scene visual rhetoric and explain how the crime scene photography aesthetic has been co-opted by photojournalism and art. The argumentation of the thesis is based mainly on the analysis of the 1930s and 1940s photographs taken by tabloid-news photographer Arthur “Weegee” Felling.

Dance, movement, photography

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to introduce contemporary dance photography and Czech street dance culture. As a dancer and photographer, I have been interested in the ability of photography to reproduce dance as an artistic expression and, as a physical, emotional and in a given context, a deeply anchored experience. The work will be based on Benjamin's concept of aurativeness, through which I will consider the ability of photography to reproduce the dance, from the point of view of three direct participants in the dance event: the spectator watching the dance; the photographer who shoots the dance scene; and the dancer himself, who dances and moves most intensely. The work will be based on the observation of the Czech street dance scene and, in addition to the above, will give an overview of Czech and world dance photography with emphasis on street dance.

Changing the perception of photography after social networks outset; Typology of Facebook and Instagram selfie photographs

This theoretical work focuses on Facebook and Instagram selfie photos and their perception. It presents the history of portrait photography from the beginning to the presence of social networks. Then I present my research applied to the specific users, in which I'm looking at the typology of selfie photography, and if while there are particular common features that cause negative feedback from other users. The paper aims to clarify what criteria play a role in selecting published photographs, if they correspond to a particular social status of users and if we can follow their typology in subcultures. In general, it refers to the perception of the photographic image at the time of social networks and a large number of visual perceptions.

The face as an index

The bachelor´s thesis Face as an index deals with the relationship between man and machine. It exam-ines this issue through the phenomenon of face recognition technology and its connections with the context of mass surveillance. In the first part, the author introduces the reader to the psychological and brain processes that are associated with facial recognition. Further, on concrete examples of neurosci-ence research associated with these processes, he shows a connection with the development of machine recognition of the face. . In the part about dealing with the historical connotations of the development of face recognition technology, the author discusses the key moments that lead to its implementation into practice. The issue of the database, the change of the technological principle and the relation between the private and the public sector in connection with the use of the above mentioned technology is examined by the author in the next chapter reflecting its state in the last few years. In the last part of the thesis, he reflects the relationship between man and machine through artistic projects focusing on the human face and the phenomenon of machine vision.

The first phase of this work, I would like to dedicate a few sociological analysis
concepts arising under the influence of postmodern and mark them as key concepts,
which I will use for my diploma thesis.
In the next phase I want to understand how much we can trace the roots of this topic in the
history.
And the final phase I want to present the term "Imitacianismus» as designating
art term with using media avatars. In order to well
analyze this issue, I want to examine some examples of artworks that are
associated with it.

The Camera Design Development

This thesis discusses the camera design development from its very beginning until present time. Methodological is based on a basic ideas of industrial design, cooperation of brands with specific designers and achieve goals of industrial design. In the beginning, I am trying to find a breakpoint in thinking about the cameras, moment of not-only light-sensitive material development, but also adding of new ideas of camera ergonomics, the functional elements of the marking symbol or extra aesthetic value and mapping the effects and conditions to which it was formed. It contains substantial cooperation with world famous brands (Kodak, Leica, Hasselblad, Pentax ...), their theoretical basis and problems, concerning media images linked to the samples as well.
