Supervision in social health care facilities
ŠAŠKOVÁ, Šárka
The term of supervision means a view from above; the supervisor sees the supervisee?s problems from above, so he/she can see also the circumstances which remain hidden to the worker. A supervisor provides support and assistance to workers in helping professions. Supervision, by its nature, may help to prevent the burnout syndrome. In the theoretical part of my work, I tried to explain the concept of supervision, to what targets it can aim, what functions it may have, and what kinds of supervision there are. Equally important is the person of a supervisor who should meet certain criteria in order to carry out supervision. The objective of my thesis was to explore how supervision is carried out in health and social care facilities and how these supervisory meetings are perceived by the staff. Specifically, I focused on two homes for the elderly and the direct service care workers. Three research questions were laid down: 1 To determine whether the supervisor informed the staff about the way supervision will be carried out. 2 To find subjective benefits of supervision for direct care workers. 3 To find out if the staff has heard the term burnout and whether supervision can, according to direct service care workers, assist in the prevention of this syndrome. To obtain the needed information, I used qualitative research and, as an experimental method, the technique of semi-standard interviews. The total number of 10 workers from two homes for the elderly participated in the research. In the interviews, I intended to obtain the basic data on the workers, their awareness of supervision, in which facilities supervision is carried out, what is their relationship to the supervisor, how satisfied they are with supervisory meetings, and what they think is the relationship between job stress, burnout syndrome and supervision. The qualitative research resulted in the following hypotheses: H1: The success of supervision depends on the quality of communication within the facility. H2: Supervision is the prevention of the burnout syndrome. The objective of the thesis was fulfilled. The thesis can be used as a basis for further research, focusing, for example, on the quality of communication between the staff in health and social care facilities and the ways this communication may influence the course of supervision.
