Slovenia while struggling to leave Sicialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
Houška, Daniel ; Pikal, Kamil (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
The Bachelor's Thesis will explore the economic arguments used by Slovenia while struggling to leave Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFR Yugoslavia). The breakup of SFR Yugoslavia started in the second half of 80's of the 20th century due to political destabilisation and economic crisis. Slovenia was dissatisfied with federal government in Belgrade, which started to pursue aggressive Serbian nationalism and ignored Slovenian demands for a wider autonomy and saw a problem in redistribution of federal finance from taxes. Continuous Slovenian feeling that its economy is misused without adequate options of self-government and obvious lack of motivation of Serbia to debate about changes in the federation led to declaration of independence by Slovenia in 1991. Economic arguments ought to be tested after a brief war between Slovenia and Serbia in the new era of an independent Slovenia. Slovenia faced challenge in the form of a transformation into a market economy, which could have been used in their position at the border of Western Europe. At the same time Slovenia's effort to join European and International economic structures meant a test if it had truly achieved a better economic situation by declaring independence. The second part of Thesis compares Slovenian independence with Catalonian separatism,...

The rise of nationalism in times of crisis : the case of Yugoslavia
Brnovic, Marija ; Tesař, Filip (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
In this thesis, we aim to find the relationship between the economic crisis and the rise of nationalism in Yugoslavia. In addition, we focus on the political framework, as defined by the 1974 Constitution, which significantly changed the course of Yugoslav institutions after the death of Tito. We find that the rising levels of debt and economic misbalance across republics were key contributors to increasing tensions between republics. We conclude that the combination of these factors with the lack of political will, stemming from decentralization and increased power to republics, as the main culprits behind the rise of nationalism. We build on the existing literature, contributing to the further cross-examination of reasons behind the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The importance of this thesis is related to the political elite, who can apply key takeaways from the case of Yugoslavia to the modern geopolitical context dealing with economic and political crises.

ŠINDELÁŘ, Jan. Nový regionalismus a institucionální rámec regionální spolupráce Západního Balkánu. Praha, 2013. 101s. Rigorózní práce (PhDr.) Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut mezinárodních studií. Katedra ruských a východoevropských studií. Vedoucí diplomové práce PhDr. Kateřina Králová, Ph.D. Abstract The presented thesis is analyzing the regional cooperation in the Western Balkans (WB) focusing on interactions of the local actors. Theoretical background is based on the theory of new regionalism, a theoretical approach to regional interactions. Contemporary studies on new regionalism (NR) actually do not consider the Western Balkans to be part of this process and as a result we lack sufficient information about the basic characteristics of this region. The author proves that the WB is engaged in the process of the new regionalism and in fact by focusing on the institutional structure he demonstrates that several parallel processes are ongoing in the region, as for example regional cooperation, integration or cooperation with another region. For the purpose of this research two projects of regional cooperation were chosen, South Eastern European Cooperation Process (SEECP) and the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) which are regarded as the main pillars of the political cooperation in...

Civic engagement in Romania - testing the applicability of mainstream theories on the winter protests of 2012
Macsut, Andrei-Cosmin ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee)
The past few years have seen the emergence of new types of civic engagement. Citizens are now more capable to organize themselves than ever before and this creates a new pattern of social mobilization that has not previously been the centre of academic focus. This work analyses the particular case of the Romanian winter protests of 2012 in an attempt to prove that current mainstream theories of resource mobilization and framing do not fully explain the emergence of unstructured movements. The results aim to pave the way for a new theory of civic engagement that fits the newly observed realities and could be generalized to explain all forms of structured or unstructured participation to collective action.
