Two centuries of Serbian novel
Doležal, Jan ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Černá, Milada (referee) ; Jedličková, Alice (referee)
This dissertation is the first complex presentation of the Serbian novel in the 19th and 20th centuries. The dissertation deals with the dynamics in the development of the Serbian novel from its beginning till the year 2000 and helps to create a complex picture based on concise analyses of 165 novels. The dissertation depicts the ways in which Serbian authors adopted universal stylistic forms (Sentimentalism, Realism, Modernism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Nouveau roman, Postmodernism) and focuses on autochthonic styles in Serbian prose (Zenitism, Neonaturalism, Nationalistic Realism). It demonstrates the high quality of the Serbian novel, but it also points out the weaknesses and cul-de-sacs of the Serbian novel. The centre of the dissertation covers the years 1961-2000 since this period has not been systematically worked on, despite the fact that the novel genre played a major role in Serbian literature in the last 40 years of the twentieth century. The most significant feature of the Serbian novel, which for rather a long time (till the twenties of the last century) lagged behind the novels of the so-called dominant literatures, is its close association with the turbulent history of a nation with opposing cultures, religions and socio-political systems. The authors, regardless of poetic adherence to...
West European Impulses of Bulgarian Diabolism (A Look at the Bulgarian Literature of the 1920s)

West European Impulses of Bulgarian Diabolism (A Look at the Bulgarian Literature of the 1920s) Abstract Keywords: Bulgarian literature, expressionism, avant-garde, diabolism, horror fiction, marvelous, uncanny, Menippean carnival discourse, romanticism, naturalism, individualism Svetoslav Minkov (1902-1966), Vladimir Poljanov (1899-1988), Georgi Rajčev (1882 - 1947), Čavdar Mutafov (1889-1954) Contrary to its generally innovative potential for Bulgarian literature, the phenomenon called Bulgarian diabolism has been a marginal one from the point of view of literary discourse. The interest of postmodern writers and reviewers has given rise to accentuating some of the partial aspects of the works of Svetoslav Minkov, Vladimir Polyanov, Georgi Raychev and Chavdar Mutafov. However, with the exception of Thomas Martin's monograph Der bulgarische Diabolismus. Eine Studie zur bulgarischen Phantastik zwischen 1920 und 1934, published in 1993, works explicating the nature of the phenomenon in Bulgarian literature have been missing. Due to their novelty and impurity, the syncretic writings of Bulgarian diabolists, blending fading individualistic modernist tendencies together with elements of romantic fiction of horror in the generally expressionist roots of their works, were a phenomenon difficult to rank for their...
The semantics of the space in Slovenian poetry in 1918-1941
Kozár, Aleš ; Jensterle Doležal, Alenka (advisor) ; Langerová, Marie (referee) ; Černá, Milada (referee)
This study focuses on Slovene literature of the period of expressionism. This period has been frequently discussed in different ways. And even more, the inquiry into this field has been also touched with ideological pressures, especially the authors preferring catholic point of view or, even though, different avant-garde movements. Theoretical approaches were often confusing as well, because of the lack of distance to the matter of study or due to mixing the terminology. Thus, many of current studies show certain kind of misuse of differences of the interpretations of the texts. Even the most up-to-date books, that examine this period of Slovene literature, do not eliminate this problem (Franc Zadravec: Slovenska književnost II.). In this study I'm comparing both the texts and authors of its time and on the other hand historical approaches to the classification of these writers. In this way I want to prove certain stereotypes in reading and classifying them. It seems that until today new theoretical approaches do not cope with the complete change of thinking this period. Slovene literature does not even have new critical issues of some of its most representative figures (e.g. Anton Podbevšek) and that is why the rethinking of it is quite complicated.
