School as an integration partner. Project final research report

The final research report presents the results of the project School as an Integration Partner, which aimed to analyze in detail the situation of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as the language of instruction at primary schools in Prague in the years 2019-2021. The introductory chapter presents the project aims, as well as the employed methodology and the definitions of key terms. The second chapter focuses on the state of knowledge, particularly with regard to existing data sources and the data itself, as well as previous research targeting pupils with migration background. The key part of the research report is the third chapter presenting the results of three waves of questionnaire surveys conducted at primary schools in Prague. The research at primary schools focused on the number of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as the language of instruction according to their level of Czech language proficiency, the forms of support provided by schools, as well as the funding of this support, its sufficiency, the existence of teachers specialized in teaching Czech as a second language and coordinators. The individual waves of monitoring also explored specific issues such as distance learning or the new system of language training. The fourth chapter of the report presents the results of the qualitative research – the case study and the analysis of in-depth interviews with various actors from school directors to teachers, coordinators and finally parents of pupils with migration background. The final chapter summarizes the findings. The research report is accompanied by questionnaires from the three waves of the survey and automated reports presenting the results of the survey for the whole of Prague and for the individual administrative districts of Prague 1-22.

Immigrant Economy and Russian Entrepreneurs in Prague

The thesis deals with the phenomenon, sometimes called "Russian infrastructure", which is created by Russian small and middle entrepreneurs. They are presented here as economic actors in search for business opportunities who make plans and strategies to achieve them. Their economic activities are conceptualized through the immigrant economy concept, which refers to the phenomena of entrepreneurship and employment of ethnic minorities and migrants within networks created by themselves (Nekorjak 2009). Both the hypothesis and the subject is the existence of an immigrant economy defined as a space of social and economic relations based on language and cultural affinity in which Russian immigrant entrepreneurs operate, and on which they depend in their economic activities. The aim is to identify the main characteristics and functioning mechanisms of this immigrant economy. The key questions revolves around the importance of ethnic networks from which migrants receive capital resources, the role of language and sociocultural affinity in economic relations, and finally the effect of structural factors on entrepreneurial strategies, especially the role of growing importance of migration flows from Russia, tourism, international trade and global real estate market. Immigrant entreprenership in the Czech Republic

Presented dissertation is compilation of seven articles complemented by introductory summary. First part of the dissertation contains the theoretical and methodological summary of the research topic, which include our theoretical discussion resulting from our concrete research. In the second part is presented selection of our articles, which were published or accepted to the press. The topic of the dissertation are migrants, who set up their business and their business activities. Specific attention is paid to migrants economic activities in space, concretely the types of economic concentration. The summary part of the dissertation introduces three theoretical and methodological approaches to the research to this topic, which have been in the research interest since the 70s till now. They were cultural, structural and individual approaches. The aim of this summary is linking these approaches with our research and answering the question, whether it is possible to use these approaches and theories and models resulted from these three approaches in the environment of the Czech Republic. Syrian community in Czechia - differentiation of identities

The goal of this bachelor's thesis is to examine the basic conditions of Syrian identities in the Czechia and to find out whether they have created a transnational form of identity. The analytical part is written on the basis of findings from qualitative research, which was conducted through an interviews with 15 respondents of Syrian origin living in the Czechia. Factors influencing Syrian immigration may be related to the year of their arrival in the Czechia. The identity of Syrians in the Czechia can be variable over time and is conditioned very individually. Elements of transnational identity are manifested mainly by the older generations of Syrians. The religion and surroundings in which Syrians in the Czechia grow up may have an impact on the creation of their transnational identity. The Syrian community in the Czechia is not very comprehensive and concurrently not show signs of a diasporic community. The geopolitical orientation of Syrians in the Czechia may be influenced by their ethnic or religious identity. key words: Syrians, migration, integration, transnationalism, community, identity

School as an Integration Partner. Interim research report.

The interim research report is a summary of the findings of the School as an Integration Partner project, which deals with the integration of migrant background pupils (non-native language speakers) in Prague's primary schools. The first part of the report deals with the analysis of available statistical data, analysis of previous research and other sources of information on pupils with migrant background. The second part summarizes the findings from an extensive research at primary schools in Prague conducted within the project in the school year 2019-2020 and focused on the situation of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as a language of instruction. The research focused on finding out the number of these pupils at individual primary schools in Prague including the estimation of their language skills. The research also focused on the use of individual support measures by schools, on financing support of migrant background pupils and on the existence of teachers specialized in teaching Czech as a foreign language.

Political macrogeography of current public opinion on migration and refugee crisis in the European Union: multilevel analyses

This diploma thesis focuses on the so-called "migration crisis" and its impact on public opinion across the European Union (EU) between the years 2014 and 2017. It stems from existing literature that works with the concept of perceived group threat. The main goal is to analyze individual-level and contextual-level factors that played a key role in a certain development of native population's negative attitudes towards migrants and refugees. Such context is represented by the EU member states. An important part of the analysis deals with the relative imporance of contextual-level factors vis-à-vis individual-level determinants. Based on the results of multinomial multilevel logistic regression, the study finds that contextual-level characteristics had a substantial impact on negative attitudes towards immigrants and a large impact on negative attitudes towards refugees. Moreover, the importance of contextual determinants increased in 2015 and 2016, respectively, followed by a decline in the subsequent period. The analyses also revealed that during the "migration crisis" the impact of specific categories of explanatory variables evolved differently. The current attractiveness of Karlovy Vary in the eyes of Russian visitors and residents

1 ABSTRACT Karlovy Vary is a popular spa and holiday destination of the Russian clientele. Recently has had the attendance of the city upward trend, yet the Russians in the city greatly diminished. The thesis examines the attractiveness of a city as perceived by Russian visitors and residents themselves and investigates the circumstances underlying the real reason for the declining attendance, and is looking for answers to the question, whether the Russian clientele, dominating in the spa centre, could replace the clientele other. The objective of this thesis is to find out whether the Russians lose their interest about the city, and that they are moving it to other competing spa destinations. At the same time is taken into account the current geopolitical events, which have considerable influence to the loss of arrivals of Russians in Karlovy Vary.
