Analysis of Student's Internships and Voluntary Interpreting at the Institute of Translation Studies, Charles University

This thesis contains the analysis of student's interpreting internships and voluntary interpreting in the period between 1990 and 2018, with the focus on the Institute of Interpreting Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University. The thesis includes an overview of the theoretical literature devoted to this topic, a statistical analysis of the data on the internships held between 1990 and 2019, which was extracted from the reports written by the students as well as the analysis of the students' comments regarding their internships. The thesis examines the trends in the field of student interpreting internships, their chronological evolution as well as the personal opinions of participating students. Interpreting of nostrification examinations for foreign students in Czech Republic

This diploma thesis examines the interpreting of nostrification exams for foreign students. The theoretical part consists of a study of legislation on the stay of foreign students in the Czech Republic, analysis of their number, a description of the process of recognition of foreign education and professional practice in the Czech Republic and the conditions of admission of foreign students to study here. The specifics of the interpreting context for interpreting exams are described, and their differences from ordinary interpreting examined. The empirical part of the thesis uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods and draws mainly from questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews. The different participants' experience and opinions in this situation are examined - secondary school teachers, foreign students and interpreters themselves. The research focuses on preparing participants for the exam (specific education or training for teachers working with foreign students, preparation of interpreters and their qualifications), their expectations, the course of the exam, most common problems and the satisfaction of all participants with mutual cooperation. Materials for developing interpreting skills

This thesis focuses on materials for developing interpreting skills. Its objective is to explore existing materials and conduct an in-depth analysis of several of them. It focuses on the Czech production but also partially examines Slovak publications. First, the theoretical part outlines the basic terms and concepts: interpreter training, interpreting competencies and skills, instructional materials. Then the empirical part presents the actual research, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods. An overview of currently available materials, mainly Czech, and partly also Slovak, is compiled, with a brief description of each of them. This is followed by an in-depth analysis based on the investigated parameters (trained competence, activity, possibility to perform the exercise independently, possibility of variation, only one correct solution, role of speed). This section traces what is characteristic of the exercises from three selected publications. The results of the analysis suggest which exercise books are likely to be more suitable for self-study and which for use in the classroom. This thesis can serve as a practical resource for authors of new publications, as well as for those interested in interpreting who are looking for appropriate resources for practicing interpreting skills.
Influence of the CoViD-19 pandemic on the teaching of simultaneous interpreting in the academic year 2020/2021

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, students of Czech universities were not allowed to participate in in-person classes from summer semester 2020 until summer semester 2021. This thesis aims to explore the form of simultaneous interpreting classes in Czech Republic during this lockdown. The theoretical part of this thesis presents briefly the methods of teaching simultaneous interpreting and some exercises used to teach simultaneous interpreting. Furthermore, the thesis describes some studies about remote classes in summer semester 2020. A survey among teachers and students as well as semi-structured interviews with instructors form the main part of this thesis. The research is focused on the acquisition of interpreting strategies and didactic challenges that the teachers faced during the lockdown. Another matter of interest are the advantages and disadvantages of remote teaching of interpreting. The thesis surveys students' opinions on the issue of remote teaching, and the interviews with teachers provide a more detailed analysis of didactic approaches they adopted at this unprecedented time.
Case Study on Multimodality in Simultaneous Interpreting

This thesis deals with nonverbal communication in simultaneous interpreting in booths. In the theoretical section, the relevant existing knowledge regarding nonverbal communication is presented from a general standpoint, focusing mainly on the issue of gestures. This is followed by an analysis of nonverbal communication in connection with simultaneous interpreting. The empirical section includes a case study. Its implementation is based on Elena Zagar Galvão's dissertation Speech and gesture in the booth - A descriptive approach to multimodality in simultaneous interpreting (2009) and applied to French-Czech material. Recordings were made of selected interpreters during simultaneous interpreting which were subsequently analysed. Here, the focus was directly geared toward the use of gestures and their copying. Furthermore, this section contains an analysis of the questionnaires that the interpreters answered after the interpretation. The results of this case study show that a several selected gestures were indeed influenced by the speaker, but overall, the interpreters tended not to imitate the gestures. However, more extensive research with a more representative sample of interpreters and on other language combinations is needed to gain a deeper understanding of the issue. Keywords: simultaneous...
Community Interpreting at Labour Offices - Case Study

The present thesis focuses on the use of community interpreting in public services, with particular focus on Labour Offices. It builds upon the project Development of Labour Office counselling for foreigners carried out by the Fund of Further Education between November 2013 and November 2015. Pilot testing of community interpreting at selected branch offices of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic took place in the framework of the project. The theoretical part presents a brief overview of community interpreting and the specifics of its use in communication with public authorities. Then follows a panorama of the situation of community interpreting in selected countries of the European Union. The aim of this panorama is to describe how Labour Offices in these states work with people with limited knowledge of the country's official language. The empirical part analyses outcomes of in-depth interviews with Labour Office employees carried out for the purpose of a project evaluation study. Connection between notation and quality of consecutive interpretation

The topic of notation, an important tool used in the process of consecutive interpretation, is discussed primarily in prescriptive works. Claiming that notes are a significant back-up for the interpreter's memory, the works suggest several principles that interpreters should observe in order to produce an optimal piece of notation. Nevertheless, detailed studies analyzing the influence of notes on the interpreter's performance are scarce. Many specialists have an unfavourable opinion of the possibility of an objective evaluation of interpretation quality; on the other hand, the interpreters' performance is subjected to day-by-day assessment by the market. In this area of research, it is difficult to carry out experiments and evaluation because of the small size of samples, unauthentic laboratory conditions and the individua! nature of both the notation and performance.
Virtual on-line resources for conference interpreter training

The aim of this study is to describe the influence of modern technologies on interpreting and interpreter training. It focuses on the content of a good interpreting course and summarizes the main features of remote interpreting, telephone interpreting, videoconference interpreting and interpreting over the internet. It contains an overview of eLearning tools used in interpreter training with the last chapter dedicated to a brand new tool - the ORCIT project. The main outcomes of this work are recommendations for project partners regarding functionality and efficiency of this educational platform.
Working memory in simultaneous interpreting and its capacity

The experimental working memory research in simultaneous interpreting has so far been very limited. There were small number of studies of cognitive processes in simultaneous interpreting. This thesis gives a brief overview of the recent experimental studies in this field and presents the subject of working memory. First part of this thesis shows the largely known theoretical models of working memory, information about its possible developement and its relation towards language. On the basis of the recent theoretical research, we formulated a hypothesis for the empirical part of this thesis. The hypothesis assumes that with interpreting practice there is a developement of working memory capacity and that the language factor becomes less important. In the empirical part of the thesis we described the experiment that had been done to confirm the hypothesis. The experiment consisted of standard listening span task adapted to two language variants, in Czech and in French. Thirty participants took part in this experimental study - 10 professional interpreters, 10 interpreting students and 10 non-interpreters (people without interpreting training and professional interpreting experience). The paper focuses on cohesion and coherence in simultaneous interpreting (SI). ft consists oj two parts: overview and theory ( Chapters I) II) and IV)) and the experiment (Chapter III). Chapter I defines Interpretation Studies within a broader context oj linguistics and other bordering sciences) introducing possible approaches to exploring such a demanding and complex activity as SI. Chapters I and IV include a review oj research work on interpretation) both from psycholinguistic) text-linguistic) communicative) and other points oj view. Assessment oj interpreter)s performance and quality oj his/her rendition is also discussed. The review is divided chronologically into two chapters: the research performed prior to / after the experiment from Chapter III. The concepts oj text and textual cohesion are more closely investigated in Chapter II) together ·with some other notions oj text linguistics.
