Exul. Perno. Printing and Provenance Bohemica from the Library of the Church of Virgin Mary in Pirna

The development in the Czech lands after the White Mountain Battle brought great confusion not only to the lives of a large part of the non-Catholic citizens, but also to their libraries. Book collections built up over the years became objects of confiscation, sale, theft and plunder. Intellectuals were only able to take a small part with them into exile. One of the foreign libraries in which volumes from the property of Czech exiles have been preserved is the library of the Church of Our Lady in Pirna, Saxony. A large part of the local bohemica was purchased by the National Library in the last century, but another part (mainly books of Czech provenance) remains in the historical repository next to the church cure. We have tried to map the provenance of bohemica from both the Prague and Pirna parts and to capture traces of book collections of exiles and other important personalities. The paper includes inventories of the prints and provenances of both parts.

Literary work at the Jesuit academy in Olomouc in the years 1597-1598 and its reflection in print production

In the years 1597–1598, a large increase in Latin prints, especially poetry, can be observed in Olomouc’s printed production. Their authors are mostly connected with the Jesuit Academy in Olomouc. Researchers have noticed this strange phenomenon in the past, but it has not yet been satisfactorily explained. The article aims to find out the cause of this unusual „creative wave“. It is most probably due to a hitherto unknown personality, about whom we know more thanks to the research of Polish researchers – the Jesuit professor of poetry Johann Clingerius from Thuringia (1557?–1610), who taught at the Jesuit Academy during that period. On his initiative and with the support of Bishop Stanislav Pavlovský, more than thirty poetry prints were published by Jiří Handl and the heirs of Friedrich Milichthaler. Clingerius published his poems anonymously, under pseudonyms or under the names of others. He did not only profile himself as a poet, mastered graphic techniques and influenced the decoration of Olomouc prints. In addition, the appendix contains a bibliography of Latin poetry publications between 1597–1598.

Protreptikon ad scholam Neudorfinam by Johannes Campanus and Its Place in the Context of the Early Modern Apologies of the Czech Language

The thesis deals with the Latin poem called Protreptikon ad Scholam Neudorfinam composed in 1616 by Czech humanist Johannes Campanus Vodňanský (1572-1622) in order to celebrate his patron Bohuslav z Michalovic (1565-1621). Its aim is to analyse how Campanus, recognized as prominent poet of his generation, uses the traditional literary forms to create a text strongly affected by contemporary cultural and political background. Therefore - after a brief introduction - chapter 2 describes the historical context, while in chapters 3 and 4 the rhetorical structure and literary influences (imitatio) are examined. Reffering to the research of Jan Martínek the place of Protreptikon in the context of the early modern apologies of the Czech language is considered in chapter 5. The thesis contains an edition of original Latin text and its modern Czech translation in prose with commentary. Key words: humanism, Johannes Campanus Vodňanský, imitatio, language apologies
